I'm confused. Why even call if you didn't have any intentions to take her? I'm tired, it's been a long day... I meant if she gets worse, we will cancel the trip. Ahh, gotcha. Hope you get some good rest tonight.

I'm glad you asked. As for those who said "no pets means no pets", pets are generally dogs and cats that shed and destroy things. A guinea pig is a different type of pet. They don't run around unsupervised.

I would not euthanize or cancel the trip. I would do one of these things.
1) Board at the vet and have them apply 2) Don't start putting meds on until you get back (unless the medicine is relieving discomfort or pain) 3) If they said a guinea pig was okay to take, then take them at their word. Take the cage/crate and maybe a small area rug to go under it just in case.

Update: the rental company said they'd make an exception to the no pets rule. I am surprised... We of course won't take her, and won't go if anything changes. You do sound tired. Hopefully you got a good night's sleep and are thinking a bit clearer today. I would not cancel your vacation. Buy a couple of cheap plastic tablecloths at the $ store to put underneath the cage. A sick pet, that is transportable, would not cause me to lose any money (deposit) for a respite that I would greatly need.

They don't run around unsupervised. Guinea pigs shed. I’m allergic to them- also rabbits and chinchillas and rats and hammies and mice. That said, if it’s kept in the cage with a plastic sheet under it shouldn’t be a problem.

Update: the rental company said they'd make an exception to the no pets rule. I am surprised... We of course won't take her, and won't go if anything changes. To answer questions: she poked herself in the eye (not sure how exactly) and is now blind on one side. If we don't remove the eye, it could eventually get infected. She's on the older side in guinea pig years so that was part of the euthanasia talk. The vet also said she could live anywhere from a month to a year so who knows... The medication is a moisturizer not a pain reliever. And yes, guinea pigs (at least two of our three) poop in one spot like a hamster. Glad you received a satisfactory answer from the rental. Personally, I'd just let nature take it's course - especially if it's an older guinea pig and not torture the poor thing twice a day. If the eye becomes infected, have the euthanasia talk then.
