I get it. Is there any way you can set up near your sewing machine or with your yarn nearby? I'd be such a horrible WFH person if I wasn't kept busy! Hell, even in my classroom sometimes I get bored when the kids are independently working and don't need any help from me or don't want to interact with me.

Oh my, how timely. I go to work at a medical office but this week is awfully slow. Today, I left 2 hours early after finishing and doing any and everything to make myself look busy. Thursday, I have no patients at all. That hasn’t happened in years. If I wasn’t already taking Friday off, I’d take it off. I’m already dreading it. Hoping the phone rings off the hook for people needing appointments between now and then.
Work boredom is awful…..

It's punishing to be at work w/nothing to do. I like the idea of Jeremy building you an L shaped desk, so that you can do other things when you have nothing to do.
I wouldn't want a company issued phone or tablet, because that is like putting a pager on you 24/7. Yes, you can turn it off and walk away, but it would be too easy to agree to keep it on "just this once".
Your boredom is also a product of youre ability to do the job quickly and well. I'm guessing your co-worker is never bored. Then again, she's never at work.

Buy a mouse jiggler and go about your day. Honestly, maybe even pick up another remote job. I read many articles about people successfully working two full time remote positions.
I feel for you. I absolutely hate that feeling of being jailed to my job with nothing to do. At my prior workplace I was literally walking laps around our reception area I was so bored but I had to be within reach of the phone on the off chance it would ring. That's the main reason I quit, the sheer number of days of mind numbing boredom. Sometimes I'd watch Netflix, I'd bring my Kindle and read, at Christmas time I brought gifts to work to do my wrapping there. But there is only so much someone can take of boredom.

I can see my computer from my couch, so I can sit and read and tell from the couch if I have any new emails My problem is that my computer goes to sleep after ten minutes. And this is a company preset. So I can't change it. So I've got to actually be doing something on the computer. This is where it feels like it's a problem right. Because I mean what do you do? Crochet or read and have to break focus every ten minutes? Now I sound like I'm whining. I promise you I am not. I just like being busy. But feel like they are paying my butt to be in that chair and available for 8 hours a day. 10 minutes is crazy! I can spend 10 minutes working on a problem offline easily!

It is against company policy to have any work related tech on personal devices. If I wanted this kind of contact (and honestly I'm not sure I do) I have to push for a company issued iPhone or iPad. I am like 99% sure my boss would approve that if I wanted it. I just really don't like the idea of that because I really don't want to be contacted outside of my work hours. And my boss works at some very odd hours sometimes. I like being able to shut down at the end of my day and that be the end of it so I'm not sure I want to open that can of worms. I mean … you could leave the company issued device next to your computer at the end of the work day and ignore it like you do with your computer. What you’re doing now sounds miserable and it seems worth it to explore other options. I have a position that is hybrid, working 4 days a week (2 in the office, 2 at home). We all have issued laptops and connect to full size monitors both at home and in the office. Most of the time I am busy for the entire work day but for the times I need to be away from my desk, I'm glad I have a laptop because I can just carry it with me and go through the house or out on the patio so I'm always available when needed. I would 100% request a tablet or laptop and make it clear that it's for using during business hours and leave it at your desk after the work day.

I'm hybrid and am usually wfh 2-3 days a week. This summer it's three days a week and summer is our slow time, especially July which is really dead. Thankfully for me we have company issued laptops and that's what I use most of the time, so if I'm elsewhere in the house, I just take it with me. However I do tend to just sit here in front of it and piddle on my phone etc. I sometimes do laundry, the dishes and pick up any clutter. Occasionally prep dinner etc.
I could scrap/make cards but that feels too much like not work/fun, that I feel guilty and usually do not. But in office is far worse when it's slow.

We have been sloooooow. Like for over a month. Slow, slow, slow. I am looking at most likely another month at least of this incredibly slow movement. Things should pick up end of August and then we will ride quickly until November. Then we will be dead until February. I mean working from home I can put in a load of laundry or wash some dishes. But I feel compelled to be online and available consistently throughout my work hours. My coworker feels no such obligation and I can't remember the last time I needed something and was successfully able to call her during business hours. But my boss, in particular, has gotten very reliant on the fact that I am ready and available. Problem is, I'm sitting here twiddling thumbs right now scrolling my phone all day which feels wasteful of my time and also feels like it's sucking the life right out of me. I just keep wondering just what the hell I would be doing if I was forced into the office right now. This would be far worse. But yet, I can't seem to make myself walk away from my computer either despite working from home. Is that silly? Has the world changed with WFH and my thinking is trapped in the before days? 😂 Should I take my dog for a walk like 15 times a day? 🤣 Is anyone going to die if I walk away from my computer for an hour and sew a couple of quilt squares together? 😉 I could have written your entire post!! I do the same thing and feel guilty leaving my 'station' even though it is on the couch with my work laptop!! I figure hey they know the workload and are still paying me so "shrug"!

Can you get a phone headset like drive-thru order takers have, then set up your work computer to ping that when work comes in? Then you can leave your desk to get things done around the house, even just walk some laps around the house to keep the blood flowing. When I worked from home I never felt guilty about doing laundry or kitchen chores during the work day, cuz once I signed in, my HEAD was in the workplace, so while my hands were folding clothes or peeling potatoes, my head was solving work problems, reviewing what I had just drafted, planning next steps. I would be more worried in your shoes, jeremysgirl, with the company I was working for going under, or their cutting staff to save costs if work is so slow. No they won't be cutting staff. Work tends to go in cycles for us. That's why I said, I know it'll rev up end of August and be full steam ahead until end of October. Then November - February will be slower. I never have problems with this because of Christmas. I mean who wants to work like a maniac over the holidays? Then it'll be busy from February to June. Then slow again until end of August. It's just the nature of my work.

I love my downtime at home. I'm up and down but have to be available. My phone dings if I get an email. Or really both the computer and phone. So as long as I am nearby I am good. I do laundry, vacuum, craft, watch my grandkid (in an emergency) and all that stuff that I can do so I don't have to do it on the weekend.

I would 100% request a tablet or laptop and make it clear that it's for using during business hours and leave it at your desk after the work day. Yep, this is what my daughter does. She is technically hybrid but in reality, almost fully remote. When she has work to do, she prefers to be at her desk with the two big monitors. When things are slow, she unhooks the laptop from the monitors and keeps it nearby as she goes about her business. Companies that track mouseclicks or whatever for work time instead of paying for work product are inhumane, IMO. There are days where she has time to do housework or play around, and there are days when she's working away into the late evening. What her boss cares about is that the work gets done. I love that companies prohibit employees from having work communication on their personal devices. As most people know, in the world of education, it's expected that you will have your work email and Remind/Class Dojo groups on your personal phone. And some admin is really bad about expecting you to be available 24/7. I was so happy the day I deleted Outlook and Class Dojo from my phone and person laptop. Buh-bye.

Just set up the sewing machine next to the computer and tape or Velcro the mouse to the top or side of the sewing machine! Whenever the machine is running, the mouse would be jiggling, LOL. Problem solved! 🤣

I saw online a way to hook up your mouse to your robot vacuum. My vacuums go for hours.
