Ddil is expecting and her hCG number is increasing but not doubling. She had an ultra sound last Wednesday at 6 weeks and no heartbeat detected. hCG level was 48,000. Next blood test Friday showed 55,000. Today's blood test is 73,000. She's having another blood test and ultra sound Wednesday which should be 7 weeks.
It's so crazy because they are in limbo, can't really celebrate and can't really grieve. Dr. said it's possibly a chemical pregnancy. I don't remember that term from my fertility days but I guess it's common.
Any peas have experience with this? Is there any hope, based on your experience, with number that are increasing but not doubling. TIA!
UPDATE: We're all so sad that the pregnancy isn't viable. Thanks so much for all the positive thoughts. Also sending love to the peas who have had to experience this.

I've been there. Unfortunately it's a waiting game at this point. Hopefully Wednesday they'll have some clarity.

My heart goes out to her! When my numbers did that I had an ectopic. Did they check for that?

OBGYN nurse here. After about 8 weeks pregnant Hcg levels no longer double, but continue to rise. These levels you’ve posted are very high though for 6 weeks gestation and we are typically able to see a heartbeat at Hcg level of 10,000-12,000 which is around 6+ weeks. My concern would be for a molar pregnancy with levels that high and only being 6 weeks along. Regardless, I don’t think this is going to end as a normal pregnancy. I’m sorry😞

As someone who has been through infertility I feel for her because it is an agonizing wait until the next test. I can tell you with my miscarriage when the u/s wasn’t showing a heartbeat my numbers were dropping. I will be keeping them in my thoughts.

Did you know the placenta secretes hCG? Unfortunately, with my first IVF, levels did not increase normally and DNC. Second IVF, hCG really high and doubled. I have twins. The waiting is agonizing. Hugs.

I had 3 pregnancy's that were called Blited Ovums (spelling may be wrong). I felt pregnant, positive pregnancy tests, but nothing was there. Yes, my hug went up.
My first one wasn't until I went in to find out the sex of the baby did they realize I really wasn't pregnant. Then on the next 2 pregnancies I was watched closely. Both the second one and third one I knew when I had the pregnancy ended. My principal thought I was nuts. I could tell. I didn't have the pressure that I had. All of a sudden no pressure in my abdomen. I called my dr. I went in for an ultrasound. Both of those ended too.
I went on to have a daughter naturally. What was the difference? I started on progesterone super early. I had WEEKLY ultrasounds starting as soon as I was pregnant. Yes, they can see something.
I ended up on bedrest a couple of times. That seemed to be because I wasn't drinking enough water.
Our daughter was a happy, healthy baby delivered c-section because she kept flipping around.

This typically occurs before mom even realizes she’s missed her period. This probably happens often and no one knows because mom assumes it’s her normal period. (Honestly the number one reason people shouldn’t test before they’re at least 1 week late on their menses.) Blighted Ovums typically occur when there was something wrong with pregnancy whether chromosomally or development of the placenta. Molar pregnancy is similar in that it’s not a normal developing fetus but more a bunch of random confused cells that form a mass. They all will show a positive pregnancy test, but only the Blighted ovum and Molar would show levels that high with pregnancy symptoms. How far along should she be with her last menses? |

Thanks hookedonpeas ! The doctor said it was an anembryonic pregnancy/blighted ovum. She has had no bleeding yet. She has to go back in a week to make sure her hCG is dropping. They will try again in a few months. They also found that she has a bicornuate uterus that they are going to look into further but is unrelated to the issues with this pregnancy. |

That's sad. Pregnancies that don't result in birth are more common than people realise. It sounds as if she's healthy and will be able to go on to have children once her body has recovered though. I wish you all well.

I'm so so sorry. It's so common - especially as pregnancy tests have become accurate earlier and earlier. Very early state miscarriages are ubiquitous. I don't say that to minimize her or your grief, just to say that this is not indicative of any issue with future pregnancies. Sending the gentlest of hugs to you all.

I’m so sorry. I know her pain all too well. Grieve as you need it’s a horrible pain that takes a while to move past.
If you’re interested… I lost my first at 6-9 weeks, (healthy baby girl for my 2nd was conceived 3 months after my 1st loss), my 3rd pregnancy was the same loss as the first, my 4th pregnancy was a loss of multiples early on plus an ectopic at the same time that required surgery to remove, went on to have a healthy baby boy for my 5th.
