Ha, my friend and I were talking about this very topic on our walk this morning. She was saying that she loved one of the swimming races where an Australian swimmer Duncan Armstrong unexpectedly beat an American swimmer (it was probably Matt Biondi in 1988). She liked it because every non-American Olympian in the world wants to beat the American athletes , which happened in this case. But not only that, she loved that the American swimmer seemed genuinely happy for Duncan, and congratulated him. Which brings me onto one of my favourite memories: Sydney Olympics, the year 2000. The US 200m relay team were thought to be unbeatable. US swimmer Gary Hall Jr had that confidence and arrogance that you love if he's on your team, and dislike if he's not on your team. He used to wear Apollo Creed shorts, and would do shadow-boxing when he was lining up behind the blocks. Wâïž In an interview, he said this about the Australian relay team: "My biased opinion says that we will smash them like guitars." So then when the Australian relay team beat the US relay team in that race, the Australian swimmers stood on the edge of the pool and started playing air guitars, in reference to Gary Hall Jr saying he was going to smash them like guitars. Oh, the satisfaction of every Australian watching!! Mind you, Gary Hall was the first swimmer to go over and congratulate the Australian team, and one of the Aussie swimmers said that "even though he dished it out, he was a true sportsman.â

In an interview, he said this about the Australian relay team: "My biased opinion says that we will smash them like guitars." I'd forgotten about that, yes it was a great moment with the air guitars! My others are basketball related, 1996 - Aussie Boomers playing the USA Dream Team and scrappy little Shane Heal talking shit to Charles Barkly and almost getting into a punch up on the court. Heal made several 3 pointers and Barkly was getting frustrated. I think Barkly was used to having everyone back down, but Shane didn't and it made him even angrier. Then the disappointment of the Boomers sometimes playing so well but still never getting a medal - until the last Olympics. Andrew Gaze who was our star player for many years (and also my favourite) was commentating, and they finally won a bronze medal, Gaze starting crying when he was talking about how proud he was, and that set me off! I couldn't believe I was crying about a basketball game. Looking forward to seeing how we do this year because the pressure is on.

Shane was best mates with my ex (DD's dad) - they grew up together. After that happened, Shane sent us the photos that were taken of their "stoush", and I went and got enlargements made, and got them framed for him. Shane was never one to back down, even though he was usually one of the smallest on the team. (He is 6' or 6'1", so he's not short by any means, he just looked short next to the 6'8"+ players!)

My first though when reading the thread title was Torvill and Dean at Sarajevo. Then I started to think back.
Many people have mentioned Mark Spitz, but my swimming memories of the 1972 games are of Shane Gould, an Australian woman, who also won a swag of medals, but was overshadowed by Spitz' achievements. Cathy Freeman lighting the Olympic Flame at he start of the Sydney game - aniconic moment for all Aussies Nadia Comaneci an Olga Korbut in gymnastics - at the time, their moves were groundbreaking.
And then there are the memories that no one wants - the terror attacks at Munich, 1972 and Atlanta 1996.

London 2012 awarded tickets to the events via a random draw, we were lucky enough to get a chance to buy tickets for the athletics on what became known as Super Saturday, we had the afternoon session. The highlight was seeing Usain Bolt run. We also saw Oscar Pistorius run, his downfall came later.

There are so many but the following competitors immediately come to mind Torvill & Dean - I watched practically every televised competition they were in. Olga Korbut & Nadia Comeneci Our rowers Steve Redgrave, Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell The Scottish Curling team Mark Spitz Kip Keino (my sister in law competed at a meeting he ran at in Kenya) Princess Anne and her daughter Zara so many more. The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics were fabulous. Who can forget the Queen and James Bond! You saved me having to type all that out

Yes, him! It was fun to watch him. Thereâs a documentary about him on Prime, I think. Or maybe itâs a film, I forget! He also took part in our Dancing on Ice last year. Although heâs getting older he really did well and you could see how determined he was.

Don't know about a documentary but there is definitely a film called Eddie the Eagle with Taron Egerton playing Eddie.

Cathy Freeman winning the 400m gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. I donât think there would be many Aussies alive who donât remember where they were that day. The immense pressure she was under would have been unbelievable. I watch it time and again and use it as a teacher when looking at resilience and hard work paying off.
Also torviil and dean. Amazing.

This isn't a specific event but:
When I was 10 my family went to the Montreal Olympics and I saw Caitlyn Jenner run. It was really cool to go to the Olympics. I had an Olympic ring necklace that I wore for a few years- I'm wearing it in one of my school pictures.

Unfortunately I remember the terrorist attacks at at the 1972 Munich Olympics. With the state of the world right now, I am concerned about this happening again. Olga Korbut and her now outlawed back flip of the uneven bars Mark Spitz and his gold medals Of course the Miracle on Ice.. I was glued to the tv Janet Lee, Dorothy Hammil, Torvil and Dean- I love to watch ice skarting. Flo-Jo - Florence Jones in track and field Eddie the Eagle the British ski jumper
I am so supidly emotional, I cry during the opening ceremonies, so many athletes with the hope of the gold and cry at the closing ceremonoies. I don't want anyone to lose or be disppointed.

The first thing that came to mind was when Kerri Strug had the amazing landing on her injured foot & won the gold medal - wow!!
The first Olympics i remember watching was the 1972 Summer Games and I was in awe of Cathy Rigby - I just idolized her!

Memories that stick out in my mind:
Miracle on Ice Kerri Strug landing her vault on her injured ankle Mark Spitz winning 7 gold medals Nadia Comaneci and the first perfect 10 in women's gymnastics But my favorite Olympic memory is from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake. I was a volunteer and worked in Event Services at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. I was in the stadium during the Opening Ceremony when the flag that flew over the World Trade Center on 9/11 was carried in. It was so silent in the stadium that you could hear a pin drop. I was so fortunate to be present for that moment and the memory of it still brings tears to my eyes.

Mary Lou Retton and Mitch Gaylord in 1984.đ„° I was completely glued to the tv!
Also Tarah Lipinski in 1998 and Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov in 1988 and 1994. I also remember Kerri Strug.
We are hoping to go see USA Beach volleyball in LA 2028!
I actually prefer winter to summer, but have always loved watching gymnasts and sometimes diving. I will watch other summer events, but those are my favorites.

Norway has hosted the Olympics twice, both Winter Games. The games in Oslo in 1952 was before I was born, but the 1994 Lillehammer games are legendary. I was 15 years old, and they let us watch events in school. The teachers were more interested than we were But what I remember most from it was the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding kerfuffle. I can't say that I remember the actual events they participated in, but the attack and aftermath were HUGE news in Norway! The young (Russian?) girl who figure skated to the music from Schindler's List was very emotional. I remember it very clearly. Her name was Julia maybe? And I don't remember which Olympics it was, but an Australian ice skater won a race because everyone else in front of him fell down on top of each other. It was a massive pile-on of male ice skaters, and the Aussie just slid passed them with this very baffled expression, and won Gold! Glorious moment

It was a massive pile-on of male ice skaters, and the Aussie just slid passed them with this very baffled expression, and won Gold! Glorious moment This is my favourite olympics moment of all time. The manâs name - Steven Bradbury. Such an iconic moment itâs still called âchucking a Bradburyâ in Australia, and his name still comes up as the first option in google for me if I type in âStevenâ đ That, my international peas, was the first ever gold medal australia had won at the winter Olympics and is such an underdog, Aussie battler vibe we love it to this day⊠A couple of days later we also won our first womenâs gold medal - alisa camplin was a reigning aerials international champion who was favourite to win, the fact she lost out on the honour of first ever winter medal to Bradbury is âgoldâ! My all time favourite moment was at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000 - we didnât get any tickets for any events for the Olympics (lottery system) so we got tickets for the Paralympics instead. Being in the crowd when a very excited gb athlete came to show his parents his newly won bronze medal right next to where we were sitting was amazing! Being able to congratulate an athlete on their success person to person was an honour, and an experience you just wouldnât get at the Olympics I wouldnât think. The atmosphere was also amazing as you could wander between the stadiums and choose which events you wanted to watch and everyone was having such a great time and cheering for all the athletes competing it was such a fantastic embodiment of what the Olympics should actually be about.
