Has anyone here ever been on a balloon flight?
DH bought me a flight for my 50th birthday, 5 years ago. It has been cancelled umpteen times; mainly for weather, but also for Covid and 2 cancers. We've booked it again for this afternoon, and finally it looks as if it's actually happening.
Please share any experiences? Advice?
Thanks!

I've always wanted to! Enjoy the experience! Where I live we have a 3 day balloon fest and I try to go every year. It's so amazing to see all the different types of balloons!

Oh I would love to do this- have a wonderful flight. Balloons sometimes land in my father’s fields. One time when my girls were 4 and 6 they ran out to see the balloon and the “pilot” offered them to get in the basket and fly across the field- they were so excited and he gave them both a first flight certificate.

I feel like I'd like to try this but I know that actually I would be too terrified of the height and would chicken out Hope you have a fab flight

I bought one years ago for DHs' birthday--it was cancelled a couple of times due to weather. We decided to get our money back. I still would like to do it sometime though.

We did one a few years in Brugge, Belgium. I was a bit apprehensive, as I do have a fear of heights, but once we were in the air it was amazing, just floating up there over the city then the surrounding countryside. After we landed, there was champagne and nibbles before we were driven back to our hotel. Loved it!

I love planes and helicopters, but I can give myself the heebie-jeebies on a cable car, ferris wheel or monorail. It makes no sense. When I was about 13, I was talked into going on a very small ferris wheel with my dad at the town's fun-fair. As soon as we got moving, I just held onto the front rail and shut my eyes until it was over. When I got off I asked Dad, "what was the view like?" and he said "I don't know, I had my eyes shut!"

I have flown twice, & it is AMAZING! My hometown in NYS used to host the NYS Festival of Balloons. My mom & I hosted a balloonist & his family one year in the 90s. As is custom, they took us up for free for one of the evening flights. I don't remember much about that flight except that we flew right over my dad & stepmom watching from their backyard lol. But then my 2nd time, I paid to go on an early morning flight. It was so worth it. We flew over the farmlands. The pilot showed us how well he can control the balloon by "pollinating" the corn in a field - he had us low enough to brush the tops of the stalks, then rose the balloon at the edge of the field to go over the trees. The view is amazing. And it's just so peaceful. I would go again in a heartbeat! Now I will say it's not always perfectly calm. My parents went up once in the 80s, & on landing, the basket apparently tipped, I don't beleive they were atually dumped out, just had to hang on. But stuff like that is rare. These balloonists know what they are doing, & they follow the weather very carefully. The saying is, I'd rather be down here wishing I was up there then up there wishing I was down here. Wise words! In the decades of this fest on Labor Day weekend, there was never any real issues. Enjoy! And make sure your phone is well charged so you can take tons of pictures!!

Go, enjoy! It is the best ever! Fear of heights did not even show up on my radar on my flight. It was phenomenal!!
Again, go, enjoy!!

If you’re prone to motion sickness, take some Dramamine. It surprised me, but both me and my son felt a tiny bit off. Something about the more gentle motion - kind of like how being anchored can be worse than when boat is moving. It was really fun!

My dd and I took a hot air balloon ride in Sedona this past May. It was amazing! We had to arrive at an office building at 0430, broke up into two groups, and then transported to the launching field. There we watched the balloon assembly process. We had about 16 people, plus the operator in the basket. There were two balloons. It was a little tricky to hoist up and over basket to get in and out, but there was a step on outside of basket to use to lift up. Four people per section and there were rope handles to hang onto if you wanted for security. It was incredibly smooth. We went up and down, looked for animals on the ground, and even "kissed" the top of a second balloon we were flying with (little balloon operator photo op tricks). Great sunrise pics amongst the red rocks. The set up crew met us on a gravel road with the vans/ trailers and assisted with soft landing. The balloon operators had walkie talkies to communicate between each other. We joked, had some local history lessons, and learned about height, air currents and general procedures with flying . After they packed up balloons, we drove to a lookout spot to toast with mimosas to a great flight. Of course it was an opportunity for them to sell us the etched flutes and other merchandise but a nice touch , nonetheless. We flew with red rock balloons. It was a true bucket list item checked off. There was another balloon company in Sedona, good reviews as well, that we saw floating in the air. Red rocks seemed to give us a lot of bang for our buck.
Eta: when the operator fired up the torch or whatever you call it, it was so loud, we all jumped almost every time. And so very hot, I thought my hairspray would ignite my hair. Then it would stop and we'd cool off. 😅

Sort of - I got to go in a tethered one when I was 9 or so. It was pretty amazing, I'll be honest. I would gladly go on a real flight. For what it's worth, I'm not a particular adrenaline junkie or anything, either. It was very peaceful but like nothing else!

Hopefully by now you have had your flight and it went well.
We landed in the lake. That wasn't intended of course but one of the propane tanks was empty. The gauge read full, I could see it from where I was standing in the basket. When the pilot switched over to the last tank and there was no propane, the flame went out and we started going down. We splashed into the lake and then came back up so we only got wet up to our knees. We were close to shore fortunately. A very startled boater came over and towed us to shore where they took us off one by one so the basket stayed just into the water and didn't float up. Finally they got the basket onto shore with DH still the last passenger inside for ballast (something I enjoyed teasing him about).
It wasn't that scary given that we were close to shore. It could have been a lot worse - landing in a tree or on the interstate for example. It made the experience memorable. Otherwise, it would have been a bit boring to tell the truth.

I surprised my DH with a balloon flight in Moab. It was such a great experience. The flight is actually very serene, you are just moving with the wind. Enjoy.

I have always wanted to go, but never have. I find things like rocking gently on a boat, swaying in a hammock or rocking in a rocking chair so relaxing, that I know I would love it in the air. But, I'm old an fat now, so probably will never do it.
Our city has a 3 day balloon fest every Labor Day weekend. About 40 years ago, I was in attendance and they were also going to have a helium balloon race launch. 10 balloons were racing to the Mississippi River. They were getting ready to launch and while standing there, I noticed one of the balloons contained comedian Flip Wilson. I walked over to his balloon and asked for his autograph. He said, "oh honey, this is dangerous, so I started to turn around, but he said, here, real quick and he signed my piece of paper I had. Just a few minutes before they took off, he took off his watch and all his other jewelry and gave it to one of his crew members. Thought that was interesting. I'm sure it was worth some bucks.
On a sad note though, but thought I would share for those that do participate in the future. When you go to choose a company for your flight, please do research on the company. A woman that once worked for me was so excited to go with her daughter. The daughter had purchased the tickets for her for mother's day. The balloon crashed from hitting power lines and all 16 people passed away. Upon reseach, the owner of the company was a known drug additct and had several stints in prison. They do say he had taken drugs right before the flight. He even had a bad rap on the BBB website.

I've bought them for other people, but I've never done it myself. One of the things on my bucket list is to do a hot air balloon ride at Cappadocia in Turkey. I have a few friends who have done it, and OMG, the photos are beyond amazing! RedSquirrelUK I hope your flight went well, and I hope you're able to share some photos soon.

Thank you for all your replies. It was incredible! We've spent since then trying to get the photos and videos to download/upload/play/send to friends and relatives, and have ended up going down rabbit holes trying to work out what isn't working.
I'll copy some to Postimages and add the link for you...

I’m so glad you had fun. Both my parents are/were balloon pilots, ( since the 80s ). I grew up with it so It’s fun to see people get excited over it. I was always kind of meh about it LOL My mom and aunt fly together now that they’re both retired, they meet up for weekends or fly rallies together, it’s cute.

I was going to answer w/my experience throwing an orange soda balloon from the 5th floor and making a direct hit on top of my target. I practiced for weeks. College was fun. Anyway, I have not, but it looks fun. Go and have fun.

No advice, but take photos!!
Also, have someone take your pic while you're in the balloon basket, right before you take off.
How exciting!

Have fun! Take lots of pictures.
I keep reading the title as "Balloon Fight" not "flight" and giggle at the thought of a balloon fight.

Wow! Well done you! It looks very high. What are your thoughts? Was the drink before or after?
My sister in law used to work for a balloon company near Bristol. I imagine it's that one.

I added some text after I uploaded the photos. They are in order. The champagne was at the end. I LOVED it! Bristol is the ballooning centre of the West, hosting the annual Balloon Fiesta at the end of every August, incorporating the Night Glow which we love. There are oodles of different companies, but this was with Virgin, one of the biggest. Cameron is the famous local balloon building company. They're the ones who made the shaped ones for the first time.
