I wish more mainstream scrapbook supply companies would offer some sort of rigid sleeve you could slide the album in and out of to protect it while it's on a shelf. I'm so tired of struggling to find ways to prevent getting dust into the top centimeter or so of my page protectors.
The issue is far less in our current home than our last, thank goodness. (We have far less dust here in general.) But I've tried laying cut sheets of cardstock across the albums to keep dust out of them, but the papers fall every time you take out an album, they are hard to keep looking even half decent, and because they are lightweight, they don't always even do the job as well as I would hope.
So, for instance, Simple Stories Snap line is one I buy a lot of albums from. If I could have the option to buy a side-opening cardboard matching sleeve for my albums, I'd absolutely do that.
I don't feel like my own level of craftiness would extend to making sturdy, well-fitting, easy to dust sleeves on my own.
How do the rest of you deal with dust when it comes to top loading page protectors inside of albums?

Hmm, yes, I understand! My albums were previously housed in my relatively dust free basement (electric heat doesn't make nearly as much dust y'all!), but are now on the main floor (ie with all the animals and people) of a centrally heated house - much dustier!
Have you tried folding your piece of paper to "fit" across the pages but fold down into the album covers to hold it in place? I wonder if cardstock would be more secure than copy paper. You could even use washi to tape one side of the paper to the cover, and then it would fold out/fold back over without falling off. That way, the paper would also be hidden from view because it would be nestled inside the cover.

I too understand. My dh has suggested plexiglass to sit on top of the albums but hasn't actually gotten around to trying that out

And yet now that you say it, it sounds so obvious to me--it would be a much tighter fit and not be visible when you look at the shelving. Thank you!!

Closed album cabinets? Like those bookshelves with doors on them.
We have a very dusty house, and I have no figured out why... we had central air in our old house and no problems, this house has wall heaters, and a heat pump and five air filters going 24/7 and it's a mess... I might have just not noticed but my albums don't have dust getting into the page protectors, just everything else I own.

Google Slipcase for album. I have been interested in something like that too, but the problem may be in getting the right size.

I might have just not noticed but my albums don't have dust getting into the page protectors, just everything else I own. We had electric baseboard heaters in our last house and it was very dusty. Now, we still have baseboard heat, but it's hot water. And we had drywall before and plaster here. So I don't know if either of those things matter, but we have far less dust here. But as I was unpacking some albums that haven't seen the light of day since we moved, I kept noticing that top bit of dusty page protectors over & over, which annoyed me, since I did try putting papers, and in some cases even folded pieces of fabric over the tops of the albums in our old house.

For what it’s worth, I have air cleaners in every room due to allergies and I’ve never had dusty albums. All of my page protectors are top loading and my albums aren’t looked at that often. I also have an allergen filter for the house (central heating and cooling) and change it more often than recommended.
I wonder if an air cleaner might help?

I always say >> Dust is part of my home decor and charm. Dust one day, and it's back again the next day.

I admit to being lazy, but I’m also a curator and feel pretty confident in these suggestions: 1. Try storing your albums binder edge up 2. Try laying them flat with binder edge facing out

Try laying them flat with binder edge facing out I don't like to store them flat, for fear lumpy elements may ruin neighboring pages when the weight of all of the pages are on one another, but I never thought of storing them binder edge up before. Thanks!
