I've never really heard 'mamma' used that way but after reading these posts, it does seem to be more cultural. Another "term of endearment" that I don't get is when girlfriends call each other "b*tches", as in "Hey, b*tch, what are you up to?", "B*tch, I saw your mama the other day". It's mostly a younger generation that says that but when we used that word towards another girl...it was not in a friendly way. I think that ranks up there when black friends call either other the N word. OYE I hate that. I don't like the b*tches thing either.

I don’t get that, either. Or calling a boy little man. In general I’m not much for nicknames, though.

If you part of the "in-group" it is ok, if you are an outsider, it is a no-no. The same with ethnic groups using words that would be considered offensive if an outsider used it.

In my 50's and I have 2 friends that will use that phrase in the most friendliest way. Doesn't bother me one bit. I know what they mean. It also meant something completely different back when I was growing up. I can think of few sacred "bad" words that people don't use now as terms of affection. I think television changed the effect they used to have.

My Dad's nickname for his mutter (mom) was Mooshy. For some reason my sister calls her daughter Mooshy. Just seems weird to me.
