I’m loving watching the games, but wondering how different the medal table would look if Russia was competing. Please note in no way do I think they should be and/or I understand why they are not allowed to compete at this time, however, I think the competition would be significantly different. It would be very different and not in a good way.

Well sure, they have an extensive, state sponsored doping program.

Of course we all rejoice when countries that don’t usually do so well at the Olympics have great performances. Our media have shown the celebrations in St Lucia many times; and then there’s the selfie taken by a South Korean athlete with the North Koreans - the athletes not letting their country’s official position get in the way of the Olympic spirit. And how about Chinese badminton player who held a Spanish pin on the podium, as a tribute to the Spanish athlete who had to withdraw due to injury during their heat. As you say, so many great stories. I saw a couple of Fijian women interviewed this morning about the men's rugby sevens outcome. Apparently Fijians are not at all happy about being beaten by France! It's awesome for the home team, but for Fiji, the silver just doesn't cut it, apparently. I was very excited to see the Refugee Olympic Team win a medal (bronze in women's boxing).

I've always thought this was good natured and a nod to both teams being extremely strong - so a fun rivalry. I really haven't given gold vs total medals much thought at all so am surprised at some of the passionate opinions.
The US one that cracks me up a bit is all those that are passionate about counting all the athletes who are American born or American trained but competing for different countries. Apparently, that really sends the stats through the roof. Eh I just love the competition and gasp if anyone falls and cheer if anyone is happy to win. I especially love seeing all the family members cheering and crying - sport parents/siblings is definitely universal!

Fijis first ever medal I believe was the gold in the rugby sevens so I can imagine that they may be a little disappointed
