I maps! I love seeing the big picture of where we are or are going, not just the getting from A to B snapshot from GPS instructions. That being said, I don't think I have a paper map in the car right now but wouldn't be surprised if there is one in the glove box. I definitely do not have a Thomas Guide anymore. I love using maps in scrapbooks and collecting them from places we travel.

I haven't ever not been able to find my way, even with no service. Maybe took a wrong turn here or there. But nothing bad. My one son used to go to this day camp at a farm, and to get there, we had to drive through a rural, hilly, twisty, mountainous area that had a lot of wooded sections, etc. So cell service was pretty much a no-go. We had driven to and from this place many times, but this particular year, there was a nasty, nasty storm one night during his week at camp. And I had planned to pick up my mom, bring DS to camp, then go visit a relative while he was at camp. Never before in my life had I experienced a situation in which I simply could not find a way to get someplace. There were downed trees everywhere. I had a few maps (though none showed the full area), I stopped to ask road workers & locals, but I could not find a way to that camp that day. At some point my son was now 45 minutes late for the day's camp, and I finally told my son, I was sorry, but we were going to need to give up on camp that day. So he came with us to see the relative and stopped for ice cream, and that pretty much was all the consolation prize he needed, LOL!

The reason I ask is that someone was just mentioning online the fact that they got lost coming home from a natural attraction in our general vicinity because there is no cell service, wi-fi, etc. to be found in that area. Good point! I still have a copy of the old fashioned street directory in the boot (trunk) of my car, for precisely this reason. I have no sense of direction, and I would be in trouble if I didn't have mobile phone service to use Google maps. Mind you, I haven't had to use the directory for that reason - yet - but I know that the day I get rid of it is the day I have no service and get lost!

Do you still use paper maps, or at least directions? Not any more but I swear it was easier to find your way around back when we did use full paper maps. It’s so hard to see the big picture when you’re using GPS. 30 years ago DH and I spent three weeks driving around Europe with just a map and never got lost once. 😄 (We didn’t pre-book any hotels and had no trouble finding rooms either!)

I love maps. I have my atlas of Korea which I used to drive everywhere before GPS 😂 I treasure it.
I don’t have cell coverage in a lot of Yucatan so ai have a good old atlas for here too. It is SO MUCH FUN y’all. Me, my cute little VW, and an atlas. Amazing.

Nope. My husband is some sort of navigational wonderkid. If we are traveling to an area with spotty service he will glance at directions beforehand and magically get us there and back.

I have to admit that I just bought Rick Steve's Pocket Guide to Paris just for the map. We will be spending 3 days in Paris in October. We spent a day there back in 2019 and I was very disoriented. We had a map from the hotel, but it was all shopping malls. With the map, I have a better sense of where we will be and where the sites we want to see are.
I really wish I had one for Prague last year. It's so easy to get lost there and Google Maps doesn't work very well. I don't know if it's because we were walking or because Prague is just an easy city to get lost in.
Like others have said, a map is good for getting the big picture. But, I'll still use Google Maps for navigating.

When I travel to a new area, I Google the place we are going, what freeways and exits I can take, side streets I need and write down the best 2 possible routes.
I go over them a few times the day before and day of and have the written instructions in the car with me.
I hate my TomTom's voice as well as Google maps voice. I also don't like to look away from the road.
Having memorized the routes saved me last time dd and I went to Exposition Park in LA. The exit needed was suddenly closed as were a few streets. I was able to get to the parking structure with no issue.
With anxiety, that really helps.

Speaking of maps... this just brought back a sweet memory!
When my kids would go over to their Grandma's house they loved pulling out her big world atlas and just browsing through it! I have one and I will have to remember to get that out my my grandkids get a little older!

I use my giant atlas when planning road trips. I do toss it in the car, but use navigation apps to move from place to place. I would buy a city map ahead of time if I get to Europe.

I find we particularly like paper maps when navigating small towns when traveling. I love the towns that actually offer simple road maps of the area--they're so easy to view and get a good idea for everything around you no matter where you may go. And often we find places to check out just by perusing a local map, too.
Even when my own town has events, and they publish paper maps to show event spots, I prefer that map to having to carry around my phone & check the map on the that.

That being said, I don't think I have a paper map in the car right now but wouldn't be surprised if there is one in the glove box. I like the overview of a paper map. If I am on a multi day trip, I like to see our progress on a paper map. But on the way, I like using Apple Car Play which displays my phone's map on the vehicle screen and talks me through turns. I love when Siri says, "not at this light, but the NeXT one, turn left". I have a pretty good sense of direction, though, and if I lose signal I can focus on moving--for example--north and west until Siri catches up with me. I DO find that using electronic maps and directions does tend to lull me into not reading street signs or seeing landmarks, and I have to work to be vigilent to keep track of those cues.

Yes. We use our phone GPS for directions, but use paper maps to see where we want to go. If we didn't have a paper map we wouldn't have know we were only a 140 miles from Mesa Verde NP. A must see, IMO.
ETA: we road trip with a big oversized US/Canada road atlas. And, I use a yellow highlighter for our route. (yeah, I'm a dork!)

I haven’t in a long time, but will add them. We were on vacation in an unfamiliar part of the country during the cyber failure a few weeks ago. Non-working credit cards and ATMs reminded us of how we used to travel.

Nope, I don't. This last weekend, we were heading over a mountain pass with no cell service but had downloaded the map to my phone so it kept up. If I know I'm going to be in an area without service, I make sure to download the map ahead of time.

We do in national parks for the area. They are way more detailed and give lots of information. We don't use them for getting from one place to another. My son goes on a comedic rampage when my husband whips one out. My son is that kid who uses Google Maps for short drives to make sure he avoids any yellow or red spots.
