Costco opened by my sister's home. She and I wanted to see if she thought it was worth a membership. The gate keeper kept telling us, "You won't be able to purchase anything. " We told her we realized that, but wanted to look around. Sister already had a Sam's card and wanted to decide which card to keep.
The person at the door let us in, but didn't like it.

At my Costco, there is a separate entrance for the liquor store but not the pharmacy so I'm not sure how non- Costco members are accessing that if they have to scan a card.

But people are borrowing someone else's membership card to enter without the member. For example, my brother does not have a Costco membership. I can't just hand him my card and say "go shopping." He has to be with me. In some cases you have multiple households sharing one card and taking advantage of the lower prices (or buying up the most in-demand products like the Harry Potter Squishmallows last year at Christmas). I pay my fee to (1) keep prices low and (2) have access to products I may not be able to get elsewhere as easily. When people cheat the system, prices go up because they are not paying their fair share to keep expenses down. I was just questioning why someone would go if they weren’t able to buy anything. That is what I don’t get, except for the rare instance someone posted above about taking their special needs child. I wasn’t questioning people sharing cards, obviously that is wrong. I wasn’t discussing anyone trying to cheat the system at all. I was merely questioning why someone would go into Costco just to wander. That is extremely odd to me. Got it! When you have a Costco membership, I think you tend to take it for granted. But when you have never been to one, and you hear how great it is, then it becomes an adventure to go LOL.

So what are they going to do if you are just picking up a prescription that doesn't require a Costco membership. I guess you just have to explain that you're there for the prescription? That would be the normal thing to do, wouldn’t it? Rather than laughing at the employee and continuing to walk past them.

But if you are legitimate Costco member, do you also have to go to the other entrance to buy liquor? Can you buy it while doing regular Costco shopping? That wouldn't go over well here in California. We are so used to being able to buy liquor from just about any store with a liquor license. While there is a liquor section, the grocery stores also have liquor spread out around the store. Yes, in Louisville, even the Costco member have to go through the separate entrance and get a separate receipt. I don't mind because (a) COSTCO SELLS LIQUOR?!?! and (b) I'm used to segregated sales. I don't live in KY, so I don't know how they do their licensing, but I do know that in PA you cannot sell alcohol in a grocery store. The Pittsburgh Costco where I shop doesn't even sell wine or beer (at least I don't think--never tried to buy it there). When I lived there in the 1990s. we had a store that only sold beer called "Beer World." I'm not positive, but I don't think you could even buy beer in a licensed liquor store back then. You could, however, buy a "six pack" from a bar that consisted of 6 cans or bottles in a paper bag that you carried out of the bar LOL. I think you could buy individual bottles/cans as carry-out, but I'm not sure how much. I don't know if they have updated their laws since 2016 when this article was published, but it explains the PA weirdness with alcohol sales. You can buy beer and wine in grocery stores now in PA. No other kinds of liquor, and there's a separate register. You can't ring it up with your regular order.

Costco is rolling out a new card policy. You have to scan your card at the entrance to be sure it is valid. Also, I heard your photo on file shows up and it has to match you. If you don’t have a photo on file, you have to show ID. Well, they're going to want to improve the quality of the photos on the membership cards here - my photo is black and white, and such poor quality, that honestly it could be anyone! It already takes a while to line up and get into the Costco near me, because they check cards at the door. I imagine that having to use a scanner will make it a bit longer to get through, if anything.

They have it set up at the Mission Valley Costco in San Diego. We just encountered it for the first time last week. It’s fine with me, I hope this cuts down on the people holding up the line at checkout who realize their memberships are expired or they didn’t bring the right card.

I'm in the UK, but I've had my card for ?5 ?6 years now and it's always had my photo on, and they have always scanned it and checked the photo at the entrance and at the till. I hated that it ran out just when my hair was growing back, and I have to use the new photo for another 5 years. We are allowed one visitor too, but no sharing of cards. At the exit they only check the receipts, not the card. Hopefully it won't hold up the line. Last week when we were going in Costco, a guy walked in and didn't show his card. The worker was saying "Sir, sir, I need to see your card" and he just laughed and took off into the store. First time I have ever witnessed that but maybe this will help? That's very rude. Wouldn't he need to have a card to buy anything?

It sounds like a pain. It already backs up getting in and out. We don’t share our cards so once again those breaking the rules make more work for the rest of us. I don’t blame them for trying to cut down on this though. Are there multiple machines or just one? At opening the line is halfway along the store in multiple sides. People enter 2-3 wide.

I now use the app so have the card on my phone. This is the great. Previously I've turned up multiple times without my card and not been able to get in. This has been so annoying as our closest store is Moorabbin and that's about 45-50 minutes from home. Now its always on me. Although no one ever checks going in at our store.

I love Costco but it's a PITA for me to get to. I'm in the middle of 2 stores and both locations suck. One location is in the same 'complex' with Ikea and Jordan's Furniture (a big New England furniture store) and on weekends, the traffic backs off the exit onto the highway. The other is just as bad with one way in one way out. Even though the one near Ikea is technically closer, when I go, I'll go to the other one. I haven't been since before the pandemic though I have purchased items on line. I need to make a meat run soon. I tend to do BJ's which is 10 minutes from me and has curbside. I order on the app and they load it into my car. Keeps me sticking to my list and not impulse buying. I wish Costco would do that but I think impulse buying at Costco is half the fun.
All this to say, I don't know if 'my' Costcos have scanners. There's a line to get in anyway when I go (since it's typically the weekend due to work) and I try to be there when they open. I did see a bunch of Tik Toks complaining last night about lines due to scanning.

The last time I was in Pittsburgh -- maybe five or six years ago -- there were some grocery stores that sold wine and beer. The Giant Eagle on the Waterfront was one (that was near where my parents lived). But you had to go to that specific register, and you could only buy two six-packs of beer, and I forget how much wine. Before that I remember having to go to the state liquor store for all hard liquor and for wine. Beer was only from a bar or the package store. lol. Here in the DC area there are a lot of Costcos... In the DC Costco they sell everything -- beer, wine, hard liquor. In Virginia Costcos we can buy beer and wine. And in Maryland, none of it. So people drive all over to shop for alcoholic beverages, depending on what they want.

Crazy to see how liquor sales happen in other states.
In Ca I can go to Staters Bros, Albertsons, Costco, Vons, CVS, Food 4 Less, etc etc etc and buy groceries and alcohol or pharmacy needs and alcohol. No separate lines needed.
You just can't use self checkout.

Costco is rolling out a new card policy. You have to scan your card at the entrance to be sure it is valid. Also, I heard your photo on file shows up and it has to match you. If you don’t have a photo on file, you have to show ID. There is apparently at least one Costco in San Diego County that is already doing this. You are allowed to bring a nonmember guest with you. Our local one hasn’t started it yet. So what do you all think? If it brings down the crowd inside the store, that is great. But, you can’t buy anything without a valid membership anyways. I guess if you have to show ID, it will stop card sharing. Also, in. California, you do not need a membership to buy alcohol or use the pharmacy. It is an actual law in California that you can’t restrict the general public from buying alcohol at a membership store. I guess that is a loophole to get into the store. Still can’t buy other merchandise though without a membership. Alcohol is in a different part of the store with it's own entrance so that isn't an issue.

You just can use self checkout. In my county, we can only buy beer and wine at ABC and beer and wine stores. Only one grocery location (one Safeway, one Giant) can sell beer and wine. For decades you couldn't buy it on Sunday's but that changed about 10 years ago. You still cannot buy hard liquor on Sunday.
By the way, I live in Montgomery county, MD. A suburb of DC, not in the bible belt.

I haven't been to Costco in a while so I don't know about scanning cards at the door but they do check the photo at check out and seem to pay extra close attention at self checkout. I'm for it - it's a membership. You want to shop there, you have to pay the fee.

I haven't read all of the responses so this may have already been addressed. Here in MI Costco by law has to let non members purchase alcohol and I have gone there for just that purpose. They cannot refuse me entry, they can refuse to sell me anything other than alcohol, but must let me purchase that.

You can’t shop without the card, so what is the purpose of going into Costco if you can’t buy anything? Are people just going in for a sample session? Like a free lunch? So many nonmembers were buying lunch at the food court ($1.50 for a hot dog & soda) that Costco started moving the food courts inside stores. They still had a problem with nonmembers coming in that they started requiring a card swipe to buy. Annoying for a card holding member in the check out line with a kid that could no longer get a hot dog/pizza on their own and meet at the exit. So what are they going to do if you are just picking up a prescription that doesn't require a Costco membership. I guess you just have to explain that you're there for the prescription? As soon as DD(27) turned 18 she would go in without a membership to pick up her prescription. No big explanation required, just "going to the pharmacy" as you walk through. You can also go in as a nonmember to get an eye check. A member needs to buy the contacts and/or glasses, but I'm pretty sure they can be ordered without a card swipe/number. We don’t get new cards when we renew. So, my card and photo are close to 20 years old!! 😂 Thinking back, I would say we didn't even get a new photo when they switched from Amex (still mourning over that) to Visa. I'm 99% sure the new card came with the old photo. I haven't seen the scanner at the entrance yet, but not annoyed by the idea of it. I do wonder if card sharing has meant people aren't renewing their memberships? I will be irritated if they do some sort of check at the gas line because DD will take my card to fill up both her car and mine (not at the same time obs).

We don’t have scanners in Ontario yet, and no alcohol in Costco either.
I always do self checkout, and only once I’ve been asked for ID alongside my card to make sure I’m the card owner. They’d has issues with people giving their cards to family or friends and not going with them so they were using self checkout so it wouldn’t be noticed they weren’t the card holder. But that was last year and I havent been asked since.
