I don’t think I’ve seen a live musical. In movies that are musicals I like the ones with actual songs not words with background music if that makes sense. watched Pocahontas yesterday with DD and that is the kind I don’t like. The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast are more my style. Can you explain more? I don't see any difference in these three movies. Alan Menken did all 3. I don't know how to explain I'm not musically inclined... when the movie stops, the characters sing, and it's a catchy song you can sing along... the music in Pocohontas was not like that (to me) except maybe Colors of the Wind.

I like both as long as I like the story and the rest of it. Being a musical or not is not the deciding factor. I love Grease the movie, Hamilton the play, West Side Story the movie, Les Miserables the play, Sweeny Todd movie and play and lots more. Good music, great casts, good stories. I I hate Phantom of the Opera because the version of the story is terrible. I actually like the music, just hate the story. I never saw Cats (play or movie), but I can't imagine I would have enjoyed it because the story sounds stupid.

Do you mean you like it when the characters are singing as part of the dialogue?

I'm a big musical nerd. I know all the words to most of my favorites and listen to Best of Broadway playlists on Spotify. I had four different versions of Les Miz on my Ipod when that was a thing. I've played in the pit orchestras for several local theater productions. That's how big a nerd I am. During a power outage, DH and I were reading "The Book of Questions" to pass the time and the question was, "What would youl do if you found out you only had a week to live." I said I'd sell everything and see seven Broadway shows, so for my 40th (long time ago) birthday, he arranged to take me to New York to see Sunset Boulevard and Phantom. I took my kids to productions at the Children's Theater and the Broadway Lights series in my town. When my son was about 18, I asked him which was his favorite: Him: "Les Miz." Me: "Good choice!" It's got love and war and spirituality and a wonderful score!" Him" "And hookers." Me: "Ok, now you're just winding me up."

None of the above. I'm not a fan of plays and musicals in general... The overblown overacting, dramatic gestures, ridiculous over-emoting. I hate it. I hate movies made from plays too unless they adapt and have some scenery, some action, some normalized dialogue.
I will very rarely watch a 60s movie adapted from a play and it's usually set in a New York apartment, a New York alley, and a New York bar. That's it. Characters argue. They drink. They contemplate their shitty lives. End scene. Blah...
Right now I'm big on pre-code Hollywood, since I once again have time to binge watch TCM. It must be Anita Page month and I'm loving it.
I also end up really disgruntled at men by the end of the 3rd movie or so. The things our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had to put up with, even as working professionals, were absurd.

Really, the only reason to watch Cats is for the dancing and the song “Memories.” There isn’t much of a story. Trust me, you’re not missing much.

I love both. My DH hates musicals so it’s hard to get him to one although he always admits that he enjoyed it when it’s over. Or "it wasn’t bad."
I haven’t seen Hamilton live but when I watched it I had to pause it and I found a website with all the lyrics so I could follow along with the songs. Otherwise I would have never understood any of them.

Former high school band geek here - and I loved being part of the musicals when we did them!
The last thing I ever did was Sweeney Todd, as an adult - the alumni theatre group put it on and had a full orchestra for it. SO fun!
Sadly, I did not marry somebody who likes musical theatre, so I am on my own to go to them. My girls want to go to one together, but we've yet to find one that we all want to see lol.

I am picky about musicals. It is not always easy to follow the story.

I prefer just dialog, but I will see musicals. However, I loved Wicked! Hoping it comes here again someday so I can go see it in person again. Looking forward to the movie to kinda compare them!
