I bought a png file and want to separate the elements in it so I can cut the different colors separately. Unfortunately there is no option to ungroup and release compound path does nothing.
The image is of the buffalo bills logo. So 3 colors and simple design. I appreciate any pea wisdom!

That's odd that release compound didn't do anything.
You could try tracing the file and separating the elements that way.

It is essentially a print and cut file when brought into the Silhouette software, so as far as I know, you can’t separate the parts. A PNG file is like a JPG, except that it has no background, and it comes into your Silhouette software like a JPG with a cutting line around it built in.
Other than tracing the design parts with the software tools, as was already suggested, and using the traced image parts to cut on different colors of card stock, I don’t know of any way to separate the parts of the design.

PNG files only have two layers - pixels and transparency. To make a colour separated file from one, you'd need to use art software. Manually make three copies, delete and/or fill in the areas as necessary. Vector software like Inkscape can also trace raster files (PNG, JPG, etc.) into a vector, which can be easier to separate and resize.

bossymom , your Silhouette software should be able to do a trace, even if it is the basic version. However, if you need help, just send me a link to the png file of the logo. There are different versions on the internet that I saw using a search, so if I know which version, I can probably do a trace for you if you need. Doing a successful trace depends on how clear the lines/image parts are. Artsy versions can be more challenging to turn into a cut file. However, I do have medical appointments today and tomorrow, so I won’t be able to help before this evening, or tomorrow later in the day. I’m happy to help you turn it into a cut file if you need.

scrapnnana , Thank you ! I am at work now but I will try your recommendation of the tracing tool. And then if that is an utter failure, I will reach out. Thank you for your generous offer. ETA good luck with your appointments!

There are several "conversion" site that are free on the internet. They allow you to upload the original file, PNG or PDF, choose to convert to SVG and BAM you get a downloadable SVG file.
