I just finished Look Closer by David Ellis which was recommended on here. So many twists and turns! I like to read before bed and this one kept my mind working so I had a hard time falling asleep.4/5 stars Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web... and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part Gone Girl and part Strangers on a Train, Look Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know. Drat! I thought I was going to get out of this week's thread with no books to add to my TBR list, then you have to sneak in here at the last minute with this one. I put it on hold. hahaha

I started The Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. The second book of the Empyrean series. The Fourth Wing was the first book. I just started over the weekend so I haven't developed an opinion. I did think as I listened to the first chapter, I should go back and listen to the last couple of chapters of the other book. It's been a bit since I finished it. I loved this series and tore through the first three books. I just finished The Breakaway by Jennifer Weiner, which for the most part was good but clearly the author has opinions on the overturn of Roe V Wade and wanted to incorporate that into the story. The result was lazy plot points that had a 15 year old girl going to planned parenthood helped by other adults and keeping the whole thing from her mother. While I don't disagree with the author's opinion on the subject, I found myself in total disbelief of the other adults in the party that actively helped this kid over getting the mom involved. Of course once the mom finds out she's totally fine with it. There were so many other ways to talk about access to health care than going for a teen pregnancy angle. Beyond that storyline I enjoyed it. I attempted Throne of Glass and finally gave up. I found the main character to be wildly uneven and for a badass assassin more concerned with her dress and one of the men guarding her than on the "trials" she's supposed to be competing in.

There have only been two books so far, so you must have read a different series. You should definitely read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame! So good. I felt the same way about Throne of Glass. Just could not get into it. Same with ACOTAR, which I know is a controversial opinion because a lot of people really love it.

So good I apparently thought I read 3 books when there are only 2. lol Throne of glass was so bad I'm not even attempting ACOTAR. Too many other good books out there to occupy my time with.

I finally finished The Boys in the Boat, a non-fiction about the 1936 Olympic rowing team from Washington State, US. It was very detailed, sometimes too much for me, but interesting anyway.
Also I read James, a reimagining of Huckleberry Finn and told from the point of view of the enslaved Jim. It was interesting.

Maybe you reread one or both like I did, so you thought you'd read three. I'm sure I've read Fourth Wing three times, and Iron Flame twice. -- The third one, Onyx Storm, is coming out in January. I stalk my library website every day waiting to see it finally listed in the catalog. We can put holds on books once they're preordered. It's still too early to list a January book but I want to be among the first in line.
