SnoopyFan. I can taste that garlic Tuscan bread right now. We love to make grilled cheese sandwiches with it - some bread, thinly sliced ham, cheese, and a lot of butter. So good!!

I was born and raised in a suburb of Syracuse. Northeasterns have a weird obsession with Wegmans. It's really not all that and it's overpriced. Nobody I know does their regular shopping at Wegmans mainly due to the prices. I've received far superior customer service at Publix. And Publix has great BOGOs. I wouldn't recommend living in the University area. I used to work there and it's very congested as the area is home to several hospitals as well as Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate and SUNY ESF. The suburbs I recommend are west to north of Syracuse -- Camillus, Westvale, Lakeland, Baldwinsville, Liverpool, Clay, North Syracuse and Cicero. Marcellus and Skaneateles are very nice but a bit farther. Given that you love nature, in addition to the State Parks, be sure to explore the 1000 Islands area and the Finger Lakes area; both are beautiful. One state park you definitely want to visit is Letchworth -- the Grand Canyon of the East. Thank you for all of that info! Would you say the areas near the university are safe to live? I've read a lot about people who used to live there say it's crime ridden now and unsafe.

It's been over 20+ years since I lived in Syracuse although I still visit fairly regularly, but I wouldn't want to live in the University area. Of course, I wouldn't have wanted to live there when I lived in Syracuse.

I live in Baldwinsville and work in Liverpool. I work at Wegmans! The past couple of winters have not been bad. I drive an AWD SUV (Honda CRV) and have no problems. I grew up in South Louisiana and lived in Atlanta before moving to Central New York. Just be careful when you are driving in the snow. Allow plenty of extra time. They do a good job of clearing the roads, in my opinion. There is so much to do here! The parks are amazing. My boyfriend and I love to tent camp, and there are so many fantastic state parks. There are lots of great wineries and breweries. Great local bands to listen to. And it seems like there is some kind of festival happening every week in Downtown Syracuse. I'm so relieved to hear you drive a Honda CRV because that's what my daughter wants to get. I'm a little worried about her driving in the snow because she never has. I would love to go tent camping! And visit the parks. I miss nature so much. I'm so excited to be moving to such a great area. I live in Baldwinsville and my son is going to school at SUNY ESF (which borders SU and shares facilities). On the weekend, it would take me 18 minutes to get from my driveway to campus (unless there was a game). It was still under 30 minutes on a weekday morning to drop him off if he stayed the weekend at the house. Liverpool is probably pretty similar drive-time, depending on where you live. If your son does get their license and drives, getting a parking pass isn't a guarantee. And lower classmen tend to get the lot that you still have to take a bus to get to campus. There bussing in the vicinity of the college is free with a student ID. I've lived here my whole life, so I'm used to the snow. It really hasn't been as bad the last few years, but snow tires or all season tires make a big difference. SUNY ESF is where my son is applying to! We've looked at several similar colleges all over the US but we really like that this college is smaller. And bonus points that he can take classes at SUNY if he wanted. What year is your son and does he like it there? I know there are pros and cons to a smaller college setting. I grew up in NJ so I've experienced some major snow storms. I'm kind of excited as I miss it so much. I'm definitely going to invest in some snow tires if I'm driving my son to and from school. Thank you so much for all of this information! Sorry I'm late. I missed your question. My son is a sophomore in Forrest Resource Management. Good - He loves his classes. He loves everything about the school. He has a soils lab class in a field with goats wandering around! I know people in the area who love to hire ESF grads. Biggest complaints in the parents facebook group *No health center on campus. If you're going to be in the area it's less of an issue. Being 15 minutes away it's a non-issue for us. *Dorm is hard to get into after freshman year & very expensive. *There is definitely crime in the university area. You have to be alert when walking. Lock your car door. Leave nothing visible in your car. My son lives maybe 4 blocks from the SU campus and there are gun-shot detection cameras on all the street corners. Totally freaked me out when I moved him into the apartment he's sharing with a few guys. *They took away the perk of 15 free credit hours at SU. It's still reduced, but the classes are about $333 a credit hour unless it's required for your major and only offered at SU. They dropped that bomb over the summer in the same week that invoices went out for fall semester. Anyone who had signed up for classes thinking they'd be free got his with an extra $1000 per class or had to scramble to change their classes at the last minute. Even with all of the issues, (which I'm sure that every college has issues) my son LOVES it and has zero regrets. The fact that I'm close by if there's an issue gives me comfort. Next year his plan is to live at home and commute. We didn't have a car situation nailed down this summer, so he's staying in the univeristy area. The busses are free with student ID, so he walks about a block to get to the bus stop.

Thank you for all of that info! Would you say the areas near the university are safe to live? I've read a lot about people who used to live there say it's crime ridden now and unsafe. Every college/university campus is required to track crimes around their campus. It is referred to as the Clery act www.clerycenter.org/the-clery-act The campus you are interested in is required to make the report available to potential students. Some post it on their campus website, some make you ask for it. The campus police/security office will have a copy for you. Campuses tend to be high crime areas simply due to the density of inexperienced young adults. Some who do stupid stuff they think they can get away with while others do stupid stuff that sets them up to be victims of crime. Look at what the campus has done to help prevent students from becoming crime victims and talk openly to your student about their responsibility for their own safety. Things like what is sketchy behavior, locking doors, My campus had a "safe walk" program. Every building and parking lot had a dial less phone that connected to campus police. Anyone could request an escort if they felt unsafe walking between building

I went to college in Ithaca - the winters were brutal - very cold and very gray (but I’m a California girl) and the summers could be very hot and humid. BUT the fall is gorgeous, and the fingers lakes are lovely. Ithaca is also a neat town. My husband went to Cornell Univ in the 70’s and he described it as being very dreary as well. We vacation in Ithaca a few times a year. We love it. We live in FL now but are considering moving to the Finger Lakes. Tompkins County has high taxes so maybe we’ll go to a different area. Talking to people the last few years, they’ve all said winters aren’t bad at all now!
