I dont really follow baseball, but I saw this story today, an 18 yr old boy caught Shohei Otani's 50/50 (I dont even know what that means) ball and it was yanked from his hands, and the guy who took it is putting it up for auction.
At first I thought, well, I guess it's last one who comes up with the ball owns it, but then I read this:
John Uustal, founding partner in the law firm representing Matus, added: “This is not some scrum on a football field where the law doesn’t apply because the players have voluntarily agreed that they are allowed to hit each other. In the stands, once someone has the ball, it’s not legal for someone to take it. Max is a high school kid, it was his birthday. A bigger stronger adult can’t take the ball away and pretend it’s his.”
What do you think? I saw the clip and it was hard to see, but it does look like the kid had it in his possession and the other dude wrestled it away and came up with it. The kid kinda of made a motion to get it back, but it was not going to happen...

I don't know. While the boy had only one hand on it, the other guy though was pretty aggressive about wrestling it away.
I do hate the ones where a grown-up takes a ball away from a little kid.
50/50 means 50 stolen bases and 50 home runs in one season. That game was an amazing one for Ohtani! It is too bad he doesn't have the ball, although I guess he can bid for it. He has the money. The club did offer the guy about $300K for the ball, but he turned them down.

My husband showed me a slow motion tiktok about this. I agree, the kid had it in his hands, the older guy was holding onto the kids hands. Then it became a stronger is the winner thing.
I hope the kid get the ball.

This is huge in the baseball world and Otani is considered one of the best players in the MLB. The ball that is being auctioned was already going for $1.2 million --- and that was yesterday. I haven't looked to see what it's at today. The adult that took that ball from a kid literally stole money from him.

I still agree with if first person has hands on the ball, it's their ball. I've recently seen an adult woman take away a ball from a child and it was gross, and in the video I saw (not slow-mo) the guy did look distraught. It sounds like they are going to let the auction go forward? What a mess!

I am shocked it is going for 1.2 MILLION! The only reason I even know who Otani is is bc I think his translator got in trouble for gambling?

IMHO the guy leaving it up for auction is just asking for a major headache down the road. He should have waited to list it once the court stuff was complete. But the auction ends the following week after the court hearing.

The only reason I even know who Otani is is bc I think his translator got in trouble for gambling? Yeah, the Dodgers offered $300K and really, that was a lowball offer. Everyone knew this was going to be a historic ball as soon as the ball was hit. Opening bid for the ball was $500,000 and almost immediately was hit. Edited to add: there is a 22% buyers premium on top of whatever the auction goes for. So whoever is buying this is loaded. They also have to pay $19 shipping, and that cracks me up. Here's the link for the auction: goldin.co/item/sept-19-2024-shohei-ohtani-becomes-first-member-of-50-50-club-actual-553vh1

I don't know anything about it but if some grown man tried to grab a ball from my kid, 18 or not, he'd be fighting ME. I would literally have to be pried off his back.
