Welcome to CARDtober, and to Loving Leftovers! I will be the host for all 4 Friday challenges this month and all Loving Leftovers Challenges will appear in this thread. Samples will appear down thread, but all of the prompts will appear in this post. Each Friday I will invite you to use “leftovers” to make an embellishment cluster (3 or more items glued together). Leftovers are paper and card stock scraps, items from partially used packs of ephemera or bling, and/or other crafty supplies that are left over from previous projects (including stamped images or die cuts you made but didn’t end up using). Use your embellishment cluster for the focal point of a card front, which you should also make and complete with leftovers. If you are unsure what an embellishment cluster is, this very short one minute video link shows a cluster being put together. For all Loving Leftovers challenges, your embellishment clusters can be made from as few as three items, although you are welcome to use more if you wish.
Making an Embellishment ClusterCARDtober Challenge #4: die cut shapes from leftover scraps and create an embellishment cluster for your card. CARDtober Challenge #11: use leftover ephemera to create an embellishment for your card. CARDtober Challenge #18: use leftover Halloween embellishments to create your cluster and card; OR make a cluster & card that is fall related, or represents your state in some way. Sample cards are on the second page of this thread. CARDtober Challenge #25: include two embellishment clusters on your card, one large, one small. Link to example here: CARDtober #25 example

CARDtober #4: Cut shapes with dies, using leftover scraps of card stock and/or patterned paper. Combine at least 3 of the die cut shapes into an embellishment cluster. Use a coordinating scrap to create a card front background, and add your embellishment cluster. Finish the card front with any additional leftovers that you wish to use, whether they are from a partially used package of bling, ephemera, or anything else that is leftover from past projects. For my example, I die cut and assembled three shapes to create my embellishment cluster: I cut card stock (from scraps) in coordinating colors for my card front, embossed the medium blue, then added my cluster. I felt that it needed some additional elements to add balance, so I added the banners, stamped one of them, die cut the flowers, and shaped them. The pearl flower centers were from a partially used pack of stick on pearls. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll make from your leftovers!

Cool card, scrapnnana ! Such a wonderful way to use leftovers! I will have to dig into my SCT C&C class bin to see what I can pull out to play with.
ETA Well, that bin just overwhelmed me. I went to my leftovers from a card making day in the summer (starting with VB card kit), found some tree dies and stickers, and here is my card. Hope that group of evergreens counts as a "cluster", scrapnnana.

Thank you, grammadee. Sometimes the scrap bins can be overwhelming, but I think your tree grouping definitely qualifies as an embellishment cluster, and your card turned out great! I usually sort my scraps into piles by color and/or theme, then I pick a pile, get out my dies and/or stamps, and play around. It usually works.

scrapnnana Thank you for the leftover challenge! It had me digging through the Christmas scrap box early. Your example is lovely, full of interest and textures. So effective. grammadee Festive! I love all the different patterns that work together.

So cute, jjpeapea ! I contemplated pulling out my gingerbread die’s, but settled on the trees cuz of the papers I grabbed. My Christmas stash—except for the dies—is locked away in my corner cupboard. I *almost* opened that door this morning, but not quite ready for that stash to burst out of there and take over my whole scraproom.

I will have fun with this challenge! I keep leftovers from scrapbook pages so all the coordinated papers are together. I call it my scraps stash! I think the patterned paper is all My Minds Eye paper stack, the "Happy Birthday" stamps are my newest stamp and die set that came from Scrapbook.com just 2 days ago, pocket and tag dies are also exclusive Scrapbook.com dies. The fibers are unknown. The ink is Versa Color Ocean Blue.

Linda, that definitely counts as a cluster in my book, and I love your postal/letters card. It’s such a great theme, and everything works well together. Now I want to find those dies and that border. Is the border a stamp?

Thanks scrapnnana - dies are Hero Arts, the postage border is actually PP - Paper Studio Vintage Nation pad, I believe, from years ago. The sentiment stamp is from a Fun Stampers journey set and was a RAK

Embellishment clusters are a new one for me, and I'm not sure I really got it, but here's my attempt:

This is a lovely card, Shakti, and I think your cluster looks great. Thank you for participating and sharing it.
Embellishment clusters were a new one for me, too. They’ve supposedly been popular for awhile, but I hadn’t heard of them until this summer, when I bought a card kit at the new LSS in a nearby town.

CARDtober Challenge #11 This challenge is to use at least 3 pieces of left over ephemera* to create an embellishment cluster, then use the cluster as the focal point of your card. Use leftover card stock, patterned paper scraps, bling, and/or smaller ephemera, etc. to finish your card front. *Ephemera in paper crafting are usually printed, cut out designs that come in a package. Ephemera may look like a ticket stub, mini bingo card, or a fully colored flower, butterfly, etc. However, if you don’t have any partially used packages of ephemera, you can use leftover stickers, or cut designs from leftover pieces of patterned paper. You could also stamp and color designs on leftover card stock scraps, then cut them out to create your own ephemera. The ephemera that I used on my sample was leftover from a purchased Simple Stories card kit. I separated all of the elements into each card group based on the directions and photos. To my surprise, there were a lot of leftover pieces of ephemera, so I created a cluster with some of them and added the cluster to an embossed card stock base.

Thanks scrapnnana. I should be able to put something together from the flotsam at the edges of my scrap counter LOL. Those pieces come out of the package and never want to go back in.

Here is mine, scrapnnana. Those animals don't quite make a cluster, but this arrangement made sense to me. All scraps. cT #11 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

Very cute card, grammadee! And compliments to your grandson for his card, too! I think your card qualifies as a cluster, regardless, since the animals are also attached to the shapes behind them.

scrapnnana Such a great inspirational card. Bonus points for using up ephemera! grammadee Oh yeah, a fun card for one of your DGkids! scrapnnana I almost felt like I was cheating cuz this is making me look at the flotsam (yes I like the word grammadee ) that I have collected over the years. This card literally only took 15 minutes!!!!!! I opened up my flotsam 5 x7 boxes and found these pieces together in a ziplock bag. Probably a crop gift or make-n-take that I never finished. Found an ink that matched to blend around the edges and ink the sentiment and adhered the ephemera together. Very fun!

Very pretty card, angel97701, even if it felt like cheating. My dgs thought that "making a card from scaps is too easy to be called a challenge". What colour/brand ink did you use?

angel97701, what a beautiful card! I was hoping this would be a quick and easy challenge for most. justjac, your thank you card is lovely, and I never would have guessed any part of it was that old. It’s great to be able to use older stash items.
