I didn’t want to put the name of the holiday in the title, but what do you call today, Columbus Day or Indigenous People’s Day? Is it controversial in your area?
It is not even a State holiday in California, but it is a Federal holiday. And the Feds call it “Columbus Day”. I see people calling it both names here. Some schools are closed today, but not all.

I call it Columbus Day, as does most people I know. I suppose it's more out of habit though. Some schools are out, but not all. I don't think its a Texas state holiday this year, but I am pretty sure it has been in the past.

My state has adopted and uses Indigenous Peoples day. I try to also identify it as that day but after years of calling it Columbus Day that will slip out now and then.
It is a Federal holiday and I always had it off (as Columbus Day) when in banking. Now in healthcare and it is not a holiday. It is also not considered a state holiday.

I think this has been blown out of proportion quite a bit.
It is obvious that Columbus did not discover America because when he got there, there were people living there. With the vast water seperating the land masses, slow means of communications, when one set sail on the sea, it was a huge thing. He was the first European to discover that land mass, so maybe its the wording that needs to be changed.

Colorado celebrates this now:
Four years ago, Colorado changed state law to replace the second Monday of October’s holiday from Columbus Day to Cabrini Day. While this is now a holiday in Colorado, many people don’t get Monday off.
The holiday is based on Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini, who moved from Italy to New York in the late 1880s. Cabrini was a “humanitarian champion of immigrants and children,” according to House Bill 20-1031, “Replace Columbus Day With New State Holiday.”
She has a large statue on I-70 heading up to the mountains from Denver. It's been there for YEARS... We don't get the day off, but they did replace it (at my work) Juneteenth (June 19th).

On his other voyages, he went even further south. Leif Eriksson (and the Vikings) is credited with being the first European to land in North America.

It is not a state holiday that I know of. My kids' school had last Friday off as a teacher in-service day, but not today. I went to the library earlier and it was open.

It’s not a state holiday but both of the large school districts around us are off today. My DH is a banker so he’s off today. We call it Columbus Day out of habit.
Personally, it’s a sad day for me. 31 years ago my dad died very suddenly on Columbus Day and it will always be associated with that even though the date is different every year.

I consider it Indigenous Peoples' Day and so does my workplace which is closed today. It is called Columbus Day in my state and considered a state holiday. My husband did not have today off work, and my children did not have today off school.

I didn't realize until today that it was removed from the CA state holiday list in 2009 by then Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Is today a holiday for me? No. Unless someone is an autoworker, a govt employee, or a bank employee (im general), it isnt a holiday.
As to what the Federal holiday is called, I believe it is still called Columbus Day. I know several states have changed the name to Indigineous Peoples's Day.
If I have to refer to it when talking to someone, I call it both.

Columbus day. The banks are closed and the mail doesn't run. That's about all we notice here.

No mail and the library system was closed. I had the day off (non-profit), DH didn't (higher ed). Next month, he'll have Election Day off and I'll have Veteran's Day off.

I'm up in southeast Alaska and it is called Indigenous People Day here, which is truly the appropriate name for up here. We are just getting ready to go to the Indigenous People celebration.

Puzzles me that we are to keep religion and govenment seperate, but we are to celebrate a religious figure by making it a holiday???

I'm not sure honestly. It's very much not a recognized holiday in my life. Everyone is still at work, some kids are still in school while others are not. Basically the post office is closed and probably banks but for everyone else it's just a normal day. I would hazard a guess that formally it's Indigenous People's day but everyone just colloquially says Columbus Day.

I call it Monday. We have school, it's not a holiday.
It USED to be Columbus Day and we had it off school. Then it changed to Indigenous People's Day (which I guess is good?) but no one I've talked to really knows what the day is all about.

For us it is not a recognized school holiday for my kids. The teachers go to a conference this week each year and it is on Thursday and Friday. So they don’t have school at the end of the week but it doesn’t have to do with a holiday.

It was a big deal when I worked for the State at the time it changed so I guess it was on my radar. Regarding the religious part of it. I don't know if they are recognizing her as a religious person or just what she did for people and just happened to be a religious person. Since I don't work for the state, I rarely even hear it called Cabrini Day. In fact, I didn't even know it was a holiday yesterday. LOL

When I worked for the paper company (a national company), it was a holiday for us. In that time, my son was a student and the schools gave every kid a ticket to enter the state fair free, so he and I would go to the fair on Columbus Day (as it was known then). DH doesn't really care for the fair, so he was happy to be at work and we were happy to have a day at the fair.
At that time, my company would also give us a ticket to Six Flags so I told DS that we would not ride any rides at the fair, because when the day came we would to to Six Flags and he could ride everything more than once, so.............
When I returned to the education world, I got a ticket to the fair, so the tradition lived on.
