I was reading something last night that talked about the best hand position on the steering wheel when you are driving and in an accident. I’ll post what the opinion was after a few people have voted.
Anyways, where are your hands on the steering wheel when you are driving? 11/1 10/2 9/3 8/4 Something else? And if you drive a manual, where is your non-shifting hand most of the time? I put 12 on the poll because I see people, mainly guys, driving with their left hand on the top of the steering wheel. Must be a guy thing. 😂
I am mainly between 10/2 and 9/3. Sometimes I’ll go to 8/4. It all depends on the traffic situation. 8/4 is my most relaxed position. I also used to drive manual car, so my left hand was usually around 9 or 10.

Used to be 10/2, but for safety with exploding air bags 9/3 is best.
9 is also good for shifting with right hand. Of course opposite for right side driver.

It depends on where I am. If I'm on the interstate, it's usually 6:00 , or 5 & 7. If I'm in town and there's traffic it's 10 & 2. If I'm driving a stick, left on 12 and right on the shifter!

90% of the time it is 10/2. Sometimes on long straight roads with minimal traffic I will switch to 12 so I can drink and have a snack. My left hand goes to 12. Right is used for snacks.

Sometimes at 10 and 2 - but if my hands are in the sun I move them down to like 4 and 8 to get out of sun.

At 10 and 2. I know that 9 and 3 is better because of the airbags, but I'm more likely to cause an accident if I am driving in a position that is less familiar and comfortable (also the one time I did have the airbag deploy it was fine, not that I'm saying my anecdote is meaningful).

9 and 3, but 8 and 4 if I want my right elbow to reach the arm rest... My kids are learning to drive and keep pointing out all of me and DH's driving quirks, it's fun...

Depends on what vehicle I’m driving. In my Renegade mostly 5 & 7. In my Wrangler that I just got, it has bigger tires and I feel like I tend to be closer to 11 & 1. When I drive a stick my hands usually stay about the same areas when I’m shifting.

9/10 - 2/3 most of the time but I get some shoulder pain on the right so that will often drop down to 4 or 5 as needed.

The back of DD's hand flew up and broke her windshield when airbags deployed. Since that happened, I try not to drive higher than 9 and 3.

8 & 4. I know they suggest ( & 3 as opposed to 10 & 2 to avoid injury from air bag deployment, but I have always gone for 8 & 4 since before I had a car with airbags.

9 and 3. Although the airbags did not deploy, I was recently rear ended and afterwards read that 9 and 3 are best placement in regards to airbags. Shortly thereafter a friends son was in an accident where the airbags did deploy and the only injury he had was to one of his wrists.

When I learned to drive, it was taught as 10 & 2. Now it is taught as 9 & 3.
As for what I do, it depends on a lot of factors- time of day, traffic on the road, weather, how Im feeling

I was 10-2 until my kid took Driver’s Ed in 2005-2006. At that time they were teaching 9-3 due to airbags, so I made the adjustment. Hopefully they haven’t changed the recommendation again!
ETA: regarding driving a manual transmission, most of the time both hands are in the wheel unless I’m in a situation where I anticipate having to change gears fairly frequently (aka traffic, on hills, in the city).

What is funny is that when I am at a stop light or stuck in traffic, I put my right hand on the gear shift, even though I now drive an automatic. I’ll even drive sometimes with my right hand on the shifter. And when I have to suddenly accelerate, like up a hill, my hand goes on the shifter. I guess old habits don’t die easily. 😂

To update, yes, 9/3 or lower is the best place to hold the steering wheel because of the airbags.
Another thing to watch out for is where your thumbs are! Many people have had serious thumb injuries, including almost losing their thumbs. They said to not wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel.

Interesting info; I was still at the old 10/2 but I'll try to change that up.

Taught 10-2 pre-airbags even being a thing. 9-3 after I got rear-ended and pushed into the back of another car. Burns on both hands and one side of my face and bad contusions from my seatbelt across my chest.

Kind of all over the place. Depends on where I put them when the car is put in gear and I change frequently as I drive.

It really depends on the individual situation. Usually I do either 9-3 or 8-4 and try not to have my thumbs wrapped around the steering wheel. When I’m sitting at a red traffic light, both hands tend to go up to 12 draped over the top while I wait. Probably not the best place for them to be if I were to be rear ended while stopped!
I used to have a car with a manual transmission but haven’t for a few decades now. I remember it taking a while to get to the point where muscle memory didn’t have me automatically putting my hand on the shifter to change gears.

I picked other because I am all over the place, it just depends. Sometimes it is one handed, sometime it is 5 and 7, sometimes it more on the top. I have no set placement.

I had manual cars for a large part of driving life and still rest a hand on the shifter because of that. My niece and nephew use to chide me for that frequently, two hands on the wheel is what I would hear all the time. 😄

I also used to be 10 and 2 until my daughter took drivers ed and told me 9 and 3 was recommended because of the air bags. I’m mostly 9 and 3, but on longer drives end up all over the wheel.

It depends on where I'm driving, road conditions, how long I've been driving, and traffic. 10&2 is my serious-driver, need-to-really-focus grip. 9&3 is not comfortable on my steering wheel, too many controls in the way. 12-1 is a casual option, along with 5&7 or just 6. Sometimes, I am also a 10&5 wheel holder. I am often told I am a good driver, so all of it works for me.

I'm all over the place.. top, bottom, one hand on top, 10 and 2.. just depends on my mood. If it is a particularly dark or hard to see road most likely around 10 and 2.
I like april's answer.. depends on the music.. might be no hands at that point!
