Used to be 10/2, but for safety with exploding air bags 9/3 is best. And this is exactly what happened to me. I have a burn scar on my hand from an air bag. It was my only physical injury in the accident. It was totally the other driver's fault and her insurance company ended up giving me $1000 for it, which seems a little crazy, but I guess they didn't want me to sue. When I make demonstration photos for my art classes you can see my scar in the pictures so I always mention driving at 9/3. I don't know if they will remember it when they get their license (the kids are 14) but maybe. I was taught 10/2 and it is a hard habit to break, even after the accident.

It depends. I mostly drive 10 and 2. I don't like 9 and 3 because that is the fat part of the steering wheel. Sometimes I drive 1 handed. That is 12 or 6. When I drove a stick it was definitely 10. It is interesting because I am right handed, but since I drove a car with a manual transmission for a long time, I am better driving with my left hand than my right.

I didn't answer yesterday because I wasn't sure. lol. I wanted to wait till I drove to the grocery store this morning. Turns out that driving around the neighborhood I mostly do 7-8 with my left hand, and 3 with my right hand. That's the position where I can put my right elbow on the arm rest, and tuck my left elbow into my hip. Then when I turn I move the left hand up to 12 and sort of help the steering wheel along with my right. Probably a driving instructor would fail me. Out on the highway...I'm not sure, since it's all neighborhood streets between me and the grocery store.

I went to a one day performance driving school and it was drilled into my head to have my hands at 9 & 3. I alternate between 9 & 3 and 10 & 2.

I’ve been thinking about this quite often driving recently. As probably many of us have. ha. Because of the middle section in my steering wheel, I put my left hand holding it and the wheel part. That would be 9. My right hand is almost always at about 1.

When I drove a manual I was told that it's bad for your transmission to keep your hand on the stick. I tried not to do so unless I was in a situation where I was shifting a lot. I prefer a stick shift, but w/kids an automatic was just easier. Now it's hard to find manual transmissions. W/my automatic it's usually 10-2.
