I know many of you already know this, but for the some in the US who confuse them, it's good to understand the difference.
Medicare is a health insurance program primarily for those 65 and over.** It will pay for hospital and doctor bills, lab work, etc. and in some circumstances, short term skilled nursing (rehab). it does NOT pay for regular nursing home care. There is a portion of it that will cover drugs. You pay a premium for Medicare based on your income. ** You can get Medicare under age 65 under if you have certain medical conditions.
Medicaid is a health insurance program for the poor. Much of the Medicaid $$ goes towards paying for nursing home care for the elderly who have run out of money. A few states have programs that allow Medicaid to pay for assisted living, but this is unusual and there are waiting lists. A lot of nursing homes do not accept Medicaid. Medicaid is federally funded and run by the States.
If you or someone you know needs full time care, you are going to get it from a family member, from your own $$, from long term care insurance, or if you run out of $$, Medicaid.
