For those of you taking GLP-1 medications or with experience, what side effects, if any do you have. I would love to lose 20lbs that came on after 2 years of an aromatase inhibitor and Lupron injections due to ER/PR breast cancer. I also have ulcerative colitis which has been in remission for 12 years. I’m so afraid to do anything that would risk a flare. The weight gain has been so frustrating because I have never had issues with weight, I’m active (exercise 3-4x/wk and generally moving a lot), and I don’t eat any fast food at all, no soft drinks. But I do like my Chardonnay - about 4 -5 glasses a week.

I lost 70 pounds and am now maintaining on a smaller dose. My negative side effects were very minimal: fatigue (I could still function but would take a nap after work) for a day or two after the shot for the first 2-3 months, and I’ve had slight nausea maybe 5 times in the 18 months I’ve been taking it. (I have never thrown up, just felt a bit queasy.)
The most common side effects are gastro-related: constipation and/or diarrhea. Headaches and food aversions are also pretty common.

I've lost over 100 pounds since I started at the end of March 2023. I still am losing weight, but at a much slower pace. I need to lose another 10-12 pounds to be "normal" weight, but I'd like to lose 20-25 pounds.
My main thing has been sulphuric burps, but those tapered off as I went up in doses. I've had some constipation bouts, but those eventually resolved themselves (thanks usually to sour cream). I also got nauseous a couple times. I am always tired, but I was tired before I started the shots.
I will say though, unless you are like 5 foot even, I don't know if the extra 20 pounds puts you into the obese category to warrant the medication. I don't know that I would have gone through this if I didn't have a significant amount of weight to lose, especially if my insurance hadn't covered it.

Unfortunately weight gain is common with aromatase inhibitors. I was on Exemestane. I was first on Tamoxifen (not a AI drug. It’s mechanism to suppress estrogen is different) for 3 years. The weight gain was negligible for me on Tamoxifen. With the Exemestane it was a pound a month immediately. I was during Covid and we were very cautious and cooked all our meals at home for 6 months without even doing to-go. We were walking a lot as a family and I had picked up playing tennis 3x a week with my husband. This is why I’m so frustrated about the weight gain. I was more active than ever physically. Admittedly, I drank 1 glass of wine probably 5-6 days a week then. But otherwise, I feel like I shouldn’t have gained the weight so much. I was 40 and was breast feeding when I found my lump. My son was 16 months old and my period had just returned a few months before I found my lump. Chemo put me into menopause but I still took Tamoxifen for 3 years after chemo and radiation. My oncologist said the studies show the best outcomes with 2 years of aromatase inhibitors after the 3 years of tamoxifen. Because they didn’t know if chemo just made me periods pause and that time I was 44, I also had to do the Lupron injections (monthly) to make sure I was in menopause for the AI drugs. They told me that only post menopausal women can take the AI drugs. Maybe it was the Lupron that caused the weight gain. I know people complain about menopause and weight gain. I have been off the AI drugs for 2 years now. I had hoped the weight would come off. But it has not. We don’t go for daily walks anymore but I do exercise 4 days a week - Pilates, tennis, walk. As my kids are a bit older I do see I’m not as active daily as I was a few years ago but I’m not completely sedentary either.

kluski I've been on AIs for 3.5 years now, Exemestane being the latest and longest one. I did not gain weight on it. The chemo for my breast cancer put me into a chemical menopause at age 52. I have gained weight after my radical hysterectomy in 2023 though, and now I see what people are going through. I've never had trouble losing weight before when I needed to, but now all the goalposts have moved. I don't know what the rules are any more.
