I need a new laptop. Is there one you'd recommend from a recent purchase? (non-Mac)

I was all set to type a reply, until I got to your last words, "non Mac".

TBH, the only non-Mac laptops that operate as well as a Mac and last as long are those that cost as much as a Mac. So if cost is your driver, you might want to consider that.
If you just prefer the Windows platform, I'd starting looking around the $1200 range in laptops for the best quality.

I was going to say a Mac. I just replaced my 2017 Mac with another MacBook Pro. My former Mac still is working. I seriously ran out of memory for my desktop stuff.

I really don't see the appeal of MAC's. They have just as many issues and are subject to just as much malware as non-Mac machines. The only difference is more people have non-Mac machines so if there is a virus, it is more widespread. I used to have one when they first came out and had so many issues and the cost was crazy. My dh (who knows a lot about this) says you should look for at least an Intel I-7 with an SSD. That puts you around $1000 for a good machine. There are other processors but my dh said the jury is still out on how good they actually are. HP - have come a long way. They are actually really good machines Dell - Quality is okay. Still good but you might be able to do better in price. Asus - Actually, these have come a long way. If you go the Asus route, select a gaming laptop or higher Lenovo - We have had issues with one but it wasn't because of the hardware, it was a windows software update that hosed it but then the next update fixed the issue. It's over 7 years old and still going strong (we use that as our streaming from unknown sites so if it gets messed up, it doesn't matter). I have a Lenovo that is 4 years old and the only issue was the battery just up and died after 4 years. Unlike Dell's where the batteries are around $100, the Lenovo battery was only $45 and much easier to replace than the Dell. My dh cursed my dd's Dell because it took 3 different batteries from Dell to get it to work and then the battery didn't last long. It took him about 20 minutes to replace my Lenovo battery last night and it works perfectly.
Surface - These are good but they are very expensive.

We just had this conversation in our house with friends. My husband is retiring and was going to get a new laptop. His friend said if you aren't running any programs, then you don't need a laptop. A tablet with a keyboard would be better suited for him.

I am happy with my HP, purchased in 2021. I think it had a fan replaced about a year ago, but otherwise it is working well.

I love my MS Surface. I bought mine in Jan 2019 and it's still going strong and I have had no problems.

I have a Lenovo Yoga (?) but it is pretty old, like 7yrs or so. Battery life isn't great anymore but I've kept it plug in 247 so I know that doesn't help. Too late now. Other than that it works great. DH just ask me if I needed a new one and I told him there's no reason. I don't use it on the go often so it works for me. May look into getting a new battery if that isn't too cost prohibitive.

My last 2 were Dell's Inspiron. They both lasted me 8 years. When I needed to replace my last one, I did some more research. I had purchased DS an Acer when he started his tech school classes in 2020. Seemed like a good machine. I couldn't find a Dell in my prices range. I looked at several and settled on an Acer Laptop Aspire 5. I got it December 2022.
I got DD her's when she started school in 2022. I used the specs her program put out there and settled on a HP Pavilion Laptop 15. It's been a great machine for her. She would like a higher level machine that could run a few other programs. But it is working well for her overall.

I was all set to type a reply, until I got to your last words, "non Mac". Me too. I get that other people don't like/want them, but my last one was great for 11 years and then I accidentally cracked the screen. OP, get as nice of one as you can afford. We have used Lenovo and Dell at work and they poop out pretty fast.
