Deli meat prices are insane. Boars Head meats are about$15/lb at my Kroger, and their Private Selection is about $13. I just won’t buy it unless it’s on sale. Plus, we don’t need all the additives so we try not to make deli sandwiches a huge part of our diets. I have a meat slicer, so I will sometimes cut up a turkey breast for sandwiches for a cheaper, healthier option. But dang, I miss having good deli sandwiches! Anyway, I’ve been seeing folks on social media who make their own, and I want to try it. I ordered this off Amazon yesterday, and it should be here tomorrow. a.co/d/1XpLmSqI plan to grind up some chicken breasts this weekend and mix in some seasonings for Buffalo chicken deli slices, and I can’t wait to try it. The process looks pretty simple, so I hope I’m not disappointed. I am sure this is going to send me down a rabbit hole to find groups of people who enjoy making their own. <<Sigh>> I guess I should get ready to join some more Facebook groups like I did when I got into my pressure cooker, air fryer, Kamado grill, Silhouette, Blackstone griddle, cookies, etc. Time to start collecting recipes! So, anyone else doing this now?

No, but I admire the idea. I try to limit deli meat, or to buy the better kind, which is unfortunately expensive. But I live alone, so it’s not as big of a deal for one person.

Not really, or at least in the aspect that you have mentioned. I do make sandwiches all the time from meat that I have cooked. If making just a normal sandwich it is typically ham, turkey, or roast beef…therefore nothing special other than just cutting my meat.
I will say that I like thin sliced meat for sandwiches so that is the where using the meat slicer on just my normal cooked meats would satisfy my ‘deli meat’ wants other than a tuna or chicken salad type filling.
Good luck, I hope it turns out well.

I’m curious to see how that works out, report back & let us know,
I only buy deli meat about 4 times a year (I don’t buy luncheon meat in the refrigerator section) - I like deli meat but I just don’t eat it a lot.

Please let us know how it goes. I love a good turkey sandwich, but between the high cost and the revolting Boars Head recalls, I can’t do it anymore.

Here's a pressure cooker recipe : PastramiI only buy about 1/3 pound of deli meat every other week. We eat 1 or 2 sandwiches a week so it's enough for us. I'm cheap so I only buy what's on sale. I generally won't pay more than $8 a pound.

I’ve just pretty much quit. Using it because it’s gotten so expensive. I am interest in how it works. I will cook a beef roast and shred it for sandwiches.

I like having sandwiches sometimes but find that we typically end up tossing half of it because it goes bad before the open pack gets used up. My mom had a nice meat slicer that my sister walked off with. My mom used to slice up hams and stuff and it worked out great.

Nah, we buy maybe a pound of deli meat per week and take sandwiches to work M-W, sometimes also Thursday. I have enough on my plate without trying to make my own deli meat. We typically buy Boars Head, except for ham. And I dont usually get BH cheese
$16.99 for a pound of deli meat(i can often get the ham we like for $4.99/lb) $4.89 for a loaf of really good rye bread- I freeze the slices, so every third week or so, I dont have to buy a loaf $2.50 for six slices of cheese, if we want cheese, which we often dont Pennies for the condiments
Call it $25 and we can get 6-8 sandwiches out of it. So $3-$4 per sandwich maximum. Im happy to pay that rather than spend the time and energy making my own.
Im interested to see how it comes out though! Just because I dont think it would be worth my time and energy doesnt mean I dont think others should do it.

I'm intrigued mostly because DH might enjoy using it and creating his own concoctions. His favorite snack is a sandwich. He is a hard-to-buy-for guy, semi-retired and always looking for ways to eat healthier so I'm going to explore the world of homemade lunch meats a bit. Thanks!

Nope, I have no desire to do this. We don't eat lunchmeat hardly ever anyway.

I stopped buying deli meat due to all the recalls for contamination, plus the ridiculous cost.
I don't eat a lot of sandwiches. I usually use Costco rotisserie chicken when I do.
It's an interesting idea. My late DH ate ham sandwiches for his lunch. I'd buy a small ham and ask the person at the meat counter to slice it for me.

I tried several years ago but the meat slicer I bought was defective. I returned it and decided it wasn’t something I wanted to deal with.

My husband takes a sandwich every day for lunch. I used to get Boars Head, but the recall skeeved me out. Now I buy a rotisserie chicken and it lasts the week. Sometimes I buy a container of chicken salad at the farm stand down the street and he’ll eat that for the week. I rarely eat sandwiches for lunch, just not my favorite.

I've never tried doing it.

I don't grind meat and make traditional lunch meat. I just use left over meat to make wraps, salads, and sandwiches.
I have seen people bake a whole chicken, turkey or ham and then slice thinly and wrap in sandwich portions and freeze most with a few days in the fridge. Then defrost in fridge over night and heat if wanted then build your sandwich.
I want to try this with a ham as I can eat pork.

I don’t love cooking so I’m not looking to take on one more chore. I’m also not a big red meat eater. We mostly eat chicken or fish. If I make a whole chicken I will take the leftovers, add mayo and seasonings and eat it as a sandwich. Once in a while we do buy deli meat.

Never. I can't imagine why anyone would go through the trouble.
DH eats lunch meat. I can't remember when I last had some.

I'm cheap so I only buy what's on sale. I generally won't pay more than $8 a pound. We're cheaper than you! I would never pay even close to that. We bought a new meat slicer, still in the box, for $5 at a garage sale. We cook meats and then slice them. We just bought a frozen boneless turkey breast at Aldis for $3.49 per pound! We'll buy a boneless piece of beef that's on sale. He is so proud of himself when he slices the meat! Our local store with a deli counter is very reasonable. It's at a Veggie and Meat store vs a grocer. Sometimes we'll buy unusual cheeses but that's it.

I've been seeing a lot of TT of people making their own lunch meat due to the recalls and the price. It's intriguing. I love a good turkey sandwich with american cheese and mayo but with all the recalls, even on sale I won't buy lunch meat (I'm severely immunocompromised). When turkey breast starts to go on sale for the holiday, I'll buy those and throw them in the freezer and cook one off for sandwiches.

No offense to setting limits, but as empty nesters we don’t eat enough lunch meat to have an opinion.

I've never done it but have cut WAY back due to the price. I love a good turkey sandwich and making one with sliced fresh turkey breast just isn't the same lol
My kids like a ham a lot, so one thing I do is get one or two big spiral hams when they are on sale during the holidays and freeze the leftovers in small portions for sandwiches. That is significantly cheaper than deli ham. We will sometimes fry them instead of bacon for big breakfasts too.

I think this is a novelty or trendy type item. It would barely make cup or cup and a half tube shape, and about 4” across. Watching the videos didn’t seem to produce enough meat with a quality appearance. It also doesn’t want seem to be cost effective if you include the time and purchase of quality ingredients. It’s a hobby cooking thing. But I think it would still be fun to try😁 Let us know how it turns out

So my delivery was delayed until yesterday, and I had already cooked the chicken LOL. I won’t be in town to do it this weekend so I’ll have to shoot for sometime next week.
