I started taking bioidentical progesterone last night. This morning I woke up feeling like I’m getting a cold sore. Now I do have a cold sore and nerve pain in my eye and head. I have had this before but haven’t had a cold sore for quite some time. However, I was reminded that for awhile they seemed to coincide with certain points of my cycle. Not every month, though. I have acyclovir and started that this morning (although it could be expired). I looked it up and progesterone can be linked to cold sores. Has anyone else had this? Should I continue to take the progesterone tonight? I’m only supposed to take it from days 12-25 of my cycle. I’m on 17 now. I’m a little worried that it may get worse? Or that I will have this happen every month with an increased dose of progesterone on those days? What would you do?

I don't know the answer to your questions but I get cold sores pretty often. When you first feel that tingle put some Abreva on it. Keep applying every few hours for at least a couple of days. That will help keep the cold sore small and get it healing up quickly. I also started taking a Lysine supplement and that has helped a lot in minimizing the amount of cold sores I get.

I have taken progesterone and never had an outbreak.
You've had one dose, right? I would assume since you've had them mid cycle before, that this is whats going on. I highly doubt one single dose of progesterone would cause a breakout within hours. I would continue the progesterone as prescribed.
As far as it getting worse, there is no way of knowing if its going to make it the fever blister worse or not. Not treating it as soon as you felt the tingle could make it worse....stress...illness. So many other reasons could make it worse. I would use the meds I have right now to treat it, then call and get an updated prescription on Monday for any future outbreaks. I'd also up my intake of Lysine when I knew I would be taking Progesterone as well.
