We move into our new house on 11/2. I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of decorating videos and reels.
But…why oh why do so many of them show someone putting a vase of fake flowers/greenery and a lighted (real not fake) candle directly under the florals? Hello, let’s burn our house down.
Anyone else have a pet peeve to share?

Open shelves by the stove top. I don’t get it. Anything on the shelves will have to be cleaned regularly bc of grease splatters.

I've never seen a real lit candle under a fake plant, that seems pretty obviously a thing to avoid. I like the look with a flickering flame fake candle though.
I still need to decorate my fridge for you guys. Fridgescaping in the basement is about to be a thing!

We must see pictures when your fridge is done!
Yes…real flames. They light the candle as part of the video.
I agree on no open shelves…I don’t want that cleaning responsibility. No to big words either.

We looked at some model homes and I thought this was really strange: The windows had a short curtain rod oon each side of the window. There was a curtain hanging on each rod. But the rod did not extend across the window at all. There were blinds on the window. So the curtains were purely decoration and not functional at all. It was very odd.

I do not like:
Open shelves (instead of cabinets), in the kitchen.
Photo gallery walls with assorted (different material and colors) picture frames.

We stayed at our friends’ friends house in Vermont over the weekend. They had open shelves and I thought they looked great. BUT I think you need to be a compulsive and fastidious housekeeper and not be married to my messy and disorganized DH. Now photo gallery walls I like. I have a wall in my downstairs bath dedicated to dog art. And I’ve been looking for original art at thrift stores, flea markets and Facebook Marketplace because we’ve got a stupid long and narrow hallway with bare walls that needs something to fill it up. I’ve become enamored with the studied but casual decor style of the Brits—they do excellent gallery walls.

Anyone else have a pet peeve to share? Oh my gosh! I've seen the same type of things! Also, burning candles on kitchen counters on window sills within a very short distance to curtains. If you're actually cooking & baking, as you move past that window & candle, you're taking a chance on fabric & flame making contact, and curtains can go up in a snap. I get that most of these photos/videos are just being put together for long enough to shoot the pics or video, then dismantled to create the next bit of content, but still, they're putting these ideas out there and too many people copy what they see before passing it through the common sense portion of their brain. So yeah, long story short, I share this pet peeve.

I agree with the open kitchen shelves. We do keep 2 open crocks of utensils on a countertop, and so I know just from those, how often we have to empty those crocks to wash all of the less often used utensils. We do it because we have exactly one built-in drawer in our kitchen, so they have to live somewhere. But I wouldn't want to have to do the same thing with everything on the shelves. Similarly, I really dislike the trend I see in renovated kitchens to put in standard size cabinets, regardless of the ceiling height, and to NOT put in a soffit. I get that some people enjoy decorating the area above the cabinets, but I'm seeing many kitchens where the gap is far too small to decorate, but plenty large enough to have to keep cleaning the tops of the cabinets. I just don't want to clean extra stuff, can you tell?

Open shelves in the kitchen! NO WAY! Everything is grey and white. Please come up with another color Where every single item has to have some stupid saying on it. Only have pictures of your family and the only "personal" items are those things you get a Homegoods. Do these people NOT buy anything when they travel. Nothing with special meaning? All these houses look stale and look exactly the same. Same furniture (bland grey/taupe) with matching pillows and everything has to be perfect. What ever happened to COLOR?

I don't mind a little wallpaper, but wallpaper with busy patterns in multiple rooms goes against my minimalist vibe.

Dead flowers in a vase. I still see this on youtube and some decorating sites. Just say no to dead dusty flowers. Ick.

Fake books, just why? Ikea hacks, buying random tat at Ikea and hot gluing it together. I do get a giggle out of some of them though! Vases, plants, books, towels etc on toilet seats. Gives me the ick.

I like gallery walls. I have one on one of my walls All my frames match. I am very matchy-match. For those that have un-matching frames, if that is what they like....wonderful for them.

I thought this trend was over but I saw it the other day. Turning books so the spine is inward. If I want to look at a book, I don’t want to spend all day looking for it.

White everything.
Kitchens that are not actually made for cooking, and just to look pretty.
Open kitchen shelves.
The house across the street from me is for sale and I looked at the photos, white or gray everything, and only one upper kitchen cupboard, plus no walls between the living room, dining room, and kitchen-- ugh so noisy!
Rainbow order bookshelves-- my wanna-be-librarian self shudders.
Apparently I have a lot of design opinions.
ETA: when we have stayed at air-b-n-b's I always like how their kitchen are arranged, with plenty of room, then realize it's because they don't have to store food. I also have had to stand on a chair to reach the cabinet shelves because all three we've stayed at have the kitchen cupboards up to the ceiling. Not a fan...

I don't hate that nearly as much as I hate those voice-overs that all sound the same. I hate the tone, the generic phrases, the inflections. I am HERE for it I'm OBSESSED This is EVERYTHING etc etc etc Can't stand it. I do like that mixer, though. And the kitchen, the plant, and the candle 😁

I dislike things on top of kitchen cabinets. It bugs me, I don't know why. Most of all I hate fake ivy up there.
Live, laugh, love makes me want to murder, stab, kill.
I think my biggest pet peeve though is when art/photos are hung too high, or are too small for the space where they're placed.

There’s also a wooden cutting board directly behind her stovetop. I hope she’s got a fire extinguisher nearby!

Panels are often just for decoration. The reason for the short rods is to save money on a longer rod. Some people just like the look better.

White sofas. I have been in a few homes that actually had really white sofas but most people I know have pets, kids, feet and other things that get on sofas so white would never stay white.

We’re supposed to clean the tops of the cabinets? Only if the dust accumulates enough to start creeping down over the top edge.
