I seriously hate the new open style living room/ kitchen/ dining room thing. Kitchen cabinets are agains one wall and there’s usually a small island right across but that’s basically the only thing that differentiates the square space. I need to not have people see dishes in my sink the minute they walk in the door.

White sofas. I have been in a few homes that actually had really white sofas but most people I know have pets, kids, feet and other things that get on sofas so white would never stay white. My cousin, owner of two large dogs, did all white slip covers so she could wash them, bleach them and not worry about fading or damaged colors..

We’re supposed to clean the tops of the cabinets? Only if the dust accumulates enough to start creeping down over the top edge. So the old grease that is dripping down doesn't count? I WISHED my cabinets went all the way to the top. I do decorate up there because it would look like an empty cave. No fake ivy though. Every year about this time everything comes down and gets a good washing. I admit I don't always clean the tops of the cabinet though, but this year it is getting it good. I am going to lay down some paper or parchment paper so that the grime is limited. There is a lip so you won't be able to see it.

We looked at some model homes and I thought this was really strange: The windows had a short curtain rod oon each side of the window. There was a curtain hanging on each rod. But the rod did not extend across the window at all. There were blinds on the window. So the curtains were purely decoration and not functional at all. It was very odd. This is how a lot of my house is… and the shades retract where you can’t see them unless you really look (A frame with lake views….) No one can see in without a drone lol I can’t imagine why I would bother to touch them. FWIW… I can’t tell you the last time I closed a shade, either. We do have a bathroom window that has a curtain on the other side of the house (only can see in from an area of the driveway a stranger would never use) and we sometimes pull that curtain closed because it casts light on the tv at certain times of the day. But that’s rare too, because we rarely watch tv at those times of day lol

Open shelves in the kitchen! NO WAY! Everything is grey and white. Please come up with another color Where every single item has to have some stupid saying on it. Only have pictures of your family and the only "personal" items are those things you get a Homegoods. Do these people NOT buy anything when they travel. Nothing with special meaning? All these houses look stale and look exactly the same. Same furniture (bland grey/taupe) with matching pillows and everything has to be perfect. What ever happened to COLOR? Other than at Christmas time our living area is very (I hate the word) “curated.” It looks a lot like a hotel (some of the art work is sourced that way.) My guy is a minimalist and does not- at all- like having random stuff. I like that it’s easy to keep clean, doesn’t at all look cluttered, ever. Honestly, it was super easy to get used to, and I like it that way. My office has a lot more “personality.” His looks like his work office. To the point it’s the exact same furniture as in his corporate office lol. Also, when we travel, we tend to purchase artwork, if we want. We travel a ton, so we don’t buy “stuff.”

I definitely prefer the situations in which there is space for decorations, because I feel like you can see the top more easily once you climb up on something. But the ones where there's only 6 inches of clearance always have me imagining how to clean a narrow, dark area I can barely see or reach very well.

All the word signs. KITCHEN. FAMILY. GATHER. COFFEE. There's a trend that exploded. I think of some of the words, like "Kitchen" or "Eat!" as being today's version of the old giant wooden fork and spoon. They make me think of people who prefer to decorate a room in what they feel is a logical theme to the space, if that makes sense. For instance, some folks fill their kitchen with geese, and then there are those who say "What does a flock of geese have to do with a kitchen?" So they then may go for decorating the kitchen with decor that says food and eating instead, whether figuratively or literally. I'm somewhere in the middle--I don't use word decor, but I also can't bring my seemingly landlocked self to use nautical or beachy decor in my house, no matter how much I like it, because I'm no where near an ocean.

FWIW… I can’t tell you the last time I closed a shade, either. I don't even have blinds or shades on several of my windows. I know they'd always be open, so I figure why bother installing them? There are just certain places where I always want any possible light coming in. Our dining room, for instance--it has 3 windows, but all 3 look out onto porches, which cuts down significantly on the amount of light they bring in. Even in the middle of summer that room stays cooler because of that, and even without covering the windows at all.

Open shelves by the stove top. I don’t get it. Anything on the shelves will have to be cleaned regularly bc of grease splatters. Or gleaming copper pots hanging over the stove. Who polishes them?

I don't mind the glazing/pinstriping, but I wouldn't choose it if I were installing new cabinets. The short curtain rods, though, would bother me. I know my opinion on this is contradictory, but here goes---I'll decorate my kitchen with vintage kitchen items that were once useful, but are now only decorative. I'll put out a bowl and pitcher on a dry sink, even though I'm never going to fill either with water to wash my face. BUT, in other situations, I dislike seeing something that was once useful being obviously only decorative. Go figure. So these curtains which clearly cannot actually be used for their original purpose bugs me for some reason. I also don't love the decorative shutters of today, which often are very obviously too small to actually close over a window. I *know* they're no longer meant to close over a window, but I still like them to appear as if they could. I'm weird. I can't explain it any other way! (Maybe it's because I suppose I could still use the rolling pin or pitcher if I wanted to, but simply choose not to, whereas I clearly can't close those curtains or the shutters. But mostly I think I'm just weird. )
