A guy today in Victoria walked into the middle school where I volunteer and was high on drugs and was causing such a disturbance the police had to deploy a taser on him. This is all new to me. There is a homeless encampment right near the school. This doesn’t happen here! I am kind of shaken up to be honest.

Sorry that happened. Hopefully this will get the attention of elected officials to create a plan of action for the unused, increase mental health treatment so people don't have to sell sooth and can take proper meds while on treatment, and increase funds for services so people don't become unhoused.
It truly is a complicated issue.

I think that is probably an odd, unusual occurrence in any school. But definitely scary! I'm glad everyone is ok. Do people need to be buzzed in to the school or can anyone walk in?

I think it will change tomorrow. Access is very easy for anyone to walk in. I did that every week and no one has ever asked me anything. I think we need to wake up to our new reality. They went as far as tasing him which seems like a lot of force and I am sure the situation warranted it. It’s just scary!

All of the schools around me require people to go to the office before being let into the rest of the school, and to get into the office you have to be buzzed in (the doors/windows are all glass so they can see who is coming—hopefully bulletproof glass?). I doubt they deny anyone access very often. But hopefully if someone came to the door that didn’t look like they needed to be there they would have a resource officer or admin come to the door.

I suggested to the sponsor organization to provide us with self-identifying t-shirts that shows who we are at all times. I will see what they think. They have to see this was a huge breech of security.

She’s in Canada though so they likely don’t have the same restrictions we do in the States. Yet. That would be a very scary situation, for sure.

Hugs! Scary. The other day my son and a coworker were getting ready to leave and a person was overdosing beside the coworker's car. She had narcan in her trunk and as she went to get that, a nurse from the plasma center came out and admistered the narcan for her. She was so scared and freaked out. So sad there is so much of this going on in our society these days. Hope they take care of letting just anyone through the doors. That's an absolutely no-no.

I'm sorry this happened, Delta Dawn. It's so upsetting for students, teachers, staff and the whole community.

That is so scary to adults and kids. You just always have to be on guard.

Our middle schools are locked up, like Fort Knox (doorbell, multiple locked doors) but the high school... before my kids went there, there was an incident with a homeless guy and the bathrooms, and last year (at multiple schools including my kids' high school) some woman was getting in pretending to be a parent and stealing teacher's purses.... did they start locking the doors? Nope. You can still walk right in, because someone would have to unlock the door 17,000,000 times a day for the high schoolers to get in and out. There's supposedly a security guard before you get into the main building though.
Things I didn't even have to think about as a student in the 80s and early 90s...

I’m surprised any school would be this casual about security in this time when school shootings are such a threat. I hope this recent event will get your school to tighten up their security.

However - she's in Canada, and school shootings here are incredibly rare. Most schools in our area keep all doors locked but the front access door - which is usually in eyesight of the main office. Visitors are directed to the main office to check in before going anywhere in the school (even frequent volunteers) but that doesn't mean somebody couldn't just ignore that and walk in when office staff are dealing with other people.

There's supposedly a security guard before you get into the main building though. Things I didn't even have to think about as a student in the 80s and early 90s... I attended an inner city high school in the early 80’s and it was an issue even then. Some random dude (not a student or faculty) came into the school one day and was causing trouble. We had on site SRO’s even then but I remember the police were called in to deal with the guy. At first, they just chained all the ground level doors, but that wasn’t a viable option because in the event of a fire those doors couldn’t be quickly opened because there were too many of them. So they spent a ton of money and installed magnetic door locks on all the exterior doors and metal detectors at the main doors that everyone coming into the school had to funnel through in the morning, but that wasn’t a good answer either. The daily backup to get 2000+ students in through a single set of double doors was not good. I remember there being a lot of controversy regarding the door locks with people complaining that it was turning the school into a jail and other people argued that it was to keep outside people out, not to keep the kids in.

That makes sense. I didn’t think of other countries.

He talks to them through an intercom and then buzzes them in. I'm shocked that this guy had such easy access to the school.

There are different set ups in other countries where school shootings are an extreme rarity thankfully.
