When electing a president do the people have the right to know a candidate’s financial history and medical history every time they run for office? Should it be mandatory? Why am I asking this question? See below… I say yes for both. Ron Filipkowski…. ”Scoop @motherjones: Hundreds more doctors/health professionals call for Trump to release his medical records after his week of nonsensical & profane comments & bizarre behavior.” They say he’s “displaying alarming characteristics of declining acuity.” x.com/juliannemcshane/status/1848497437922427353?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

For sure financial information. I think that tells people where the investments and debts are. I also think that a president should be neutral and divest themselves of investments.
I am torn on health information. I don’t think knowing someone’s blood pressure or cholesterol level is important. But knowing if someone has dementia is important.
ETA - I voted no because I don’t think they need to provide both.

I think they should release the information, but I don't think think it should be mandatory. That would be an unconstitutional test of office, so it would require an amendment to the Constitution to make the disclosures required.

I get the impulse on the health records. I am torn. A lot of health information is completely irrelevant and health issues are pretty private, and this election suggests to me that people could find out Trump had advanced Alzheimer’s and would happily vote for him anyway.

I think yes for sure on financial disclosures. I also think yes for PERTINENT medical information. I dont need to know that VP Harris has seasonal allergies, but if she had say, 4 clogged arteries or a brain tumor, that is pertinent. I dont need to know if trump is incontinent, but his cognitive issues are pertinent.

I think they should disclose their financial information and there should be strict rules on divesting. I think they should have to do anything that other federal employees have to do to be hired and get security clearance. I know someone who was recently hired as a SS agent and he had to jump through hoops for a year to get medical clearance. It seemed to be a little much, IMO, but especially when a presidential candidate does not have to provide any health info. I doubt Trump would have been able to get a security clearance in 2016 let alone now after being a convicted felon. He should not be able to run.

The question was candidates. Presidential candidates - yes to both. Other offices, I don't think the medical information is relevant. I want to know the commander in chief is sane and doesn't have a known health risk that will likely keep them from completing their term.

Absolutely on financial. I need to know that the person I’m thinking of voting for doesn’t have a crapton of debt and isn’t likely to be able to be bought and paid for especially by some foreign entity. I still want to know who paid off all of Kavanaugh’s debts.

I voted no because most of the time people want the info not out of concern but moreso for a gotcha moment. I really dislike the hypocrisy in politics and this is just another way for each party to fan flames.

I voted yes but I think there are limits with the medical history. A summary with data of current health conditions is fine. Otherwise, anyone who thinks they might want to be a candidate may be reluctant to get tests or treatment.

I actually think that at least a quick medical release should be required. I'm not so much talking about Harris' allergies (though, I feel her,) but definitely cognitive, and systemic as far as heart health, cancers, etc.
Definitely on the financials. We should never have gotten this far without Trump's taxes.

There should be nothing to hide on a financial report. File it all!! Medical, we should able to have basic general information as to a candidates well being. Not all the exact details. It must be done by totally independent medical teams/facilities. Which has not been done at any time for TFG. mimima said it better ^^^^

No, I don't think they should have to release those records, unless we are ALL prepared to release that to employers. I do think that anyone seeking office should undergo a fitness for duty evaluation before they are placed on the ballot.

Yes to both.
I think public scrutiny goes with the territory when you run for political office.
I've thought so since Reagan began exhibiting concerning dementia behaviors way back when and still believe there is a public right to know. It doesn't mean someone has to be in perfect health to get elected. LBJ continued his political career after his first heart attack at age 46 in 1955.

Maybe because their job could become physical while protecting the president? Unless there are agents who only have desk jobs?
I agree with you though. Yes to both. We don't need to know every tiny medical detail, but if someone has a life-threatening condition, or one that affects their cognitive ability, the public should know.

I think they should release the information, but I don't think think it should be mandatory. That would be an unconstitutional test of office, so it would require an amendment to the Constitution to make the disclosures required. There are provisions already in the constitution that could require financial records - example gifts from foreign regimes and debt. Medical is a super slippery slope and we already have privacy laws against that. Trump has had signs of dementia for 7 years now but the MAGAts refuse to see it. Then again he HAS had debts from foreign entities ($19.8 million debts forgiven with Daewoo ) and that’s already written into the laws but he doesnt give a fuck and no one else seems to give a fuck either. The grifter is always grifting. And the GOP isn’t going to stop him. And the MAGAts do not care as long as he panders to their racist goals. The constitution be damned.

I voted no because most of the time people want the info not out of concern but moreso for a gotcha moment. I really dislike the hypocrisy in politics and this is just another way for each party to fan flames. This isn't a both sides issue. This is about the integrity and ethics of the President. Historically, since Nixon, candidates and Presidents voluntarily disclosed their taxes. For 4 decades before Trump, Presidents either divested or put assets in a blind trust. Carter put his peanut farm in a blind trust. Both Bushes and Clinton put their assets in a blind trust. Obama did not have a huge investment portfolio, the majority of his savings were in treasury bonds. Mitt Romney agreed to put his assets in a blind trust, if elected. Even Rex Tillerson made a clean break from Exxon and forfeited millions of dollars in bonuses. Before Trump, candidates and presidents released some medical information. People are now asking the question because Trump refused to disclose any medical or financial information and refused to divest or set up a blind trust. I would like candidates to disclose financial information because I don't want another President from either party in debt with the potential to sell national secrets to the highest bidder. And I don't want a President from either party in office for the purpose of enriching themselves. We should be able to trust that the president is looking after the best interests of the American people and not his or her own financial interests. So, yes, this is a question that resulted from Trump's unethical behavior and because he so egregiously broke the norms. But, I don't think it's a gotcha question. Trump's taxes have already been leaked. The question is more specifically, going forward, should candidates be required to release financial or medical info? I don't think the intent of the question was to fan the flames, we all know what Trump has done and not done. I think the intention of the question was to discuss what would be best in the future. Any other government employee cannot accept more than a $20 gift per occasion or $50 gift in a calendar year from one source. The president and vice president should not be exempt from ethics rules. The President and VP should also be a role model for other civil service employees. If a President does not abide by ethics rules, how can we expect lower raking employees to follow them? I do find it interesting that Republicans were demanding Biden take a cognitive test earlier this year. Now that Biden stepped aside, they are silent about a cognitive test for Trump. If there is any hypocrisy in terms of financial and medical disclosures, it's on the part of the Republicans. Don't even get me started on ethical standards for the Supreme Court.

I won’t answer the actual question because I’m not American …. but:
How do the candidates get to be candidates? I think you have Primaries where voters elect who the candidate will be, but how do they get onto that ballot list? Does any group select the nominees, or does the list just include everyone who says they want to be a candidate?
To me, it’s at that point that things like health, financial and social stability should be established as a requirement of being considered. By the time the candidates for the general election are announced is too late, I think.

Medical is difficult for me to say. I suppose they could say that certain medical issues had to be divulged, but A.) that could leave out ones that might prove equally problematic, and B.) I imagine they'd find ways to hide what they wanted hidden, anyway.
But mostly, I think is a future candidate preferred the public not hear the details of any host of medical issues that would have no bearing on a presidency, then they shouldn't have to share.

No, I don't think they should have to release those records, unless we are ALL prepared to release that to employers. I do think that anyone seeking office should undergo a fitness for duty evaluation before they are placed on the ballot. So you don’t think that those who work for the FBI, CIA, SS, DOJ or other high ranking military officials should have to undergo background checks or meet criteria to obtain a security clearance? I have to undergo a different background check for my job than many others do and that is fine with me. I also have been told that our local hospital system will not hire anyone who has owed them money or if an employee has a bill there they have to pay it in full or be fired. There are also jobs where your credit is checked. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the president or VP to have to meet criteria for a security clearance since they are in a position where they are vulnerable to corruption and blackmail.

We are electing someone to the highest office in the country, who will have access to other leaders from all over the world including places where those leaders aren’t so ethical and have loads of cash.

Exactly. Whatever happened to the reports that Trump took money from Egypt in 2016? Who is buying his expensive watches? What did he do with the classified documents that were hidden in his bathroom? He is a huge risk.

Honestly my biggest frustration is that we currently HAVE financial disclosures and clearly no one even knows they exist let alone look at them. Every asset and debt IS CURRENTLY REQUIRED TO BE DISCLOSED! But again no one actually cares to look at the info, but would rather find a gotcha.
And I'm on the fence on medical - do we actually need it? Are people going to believe a medical report when they don't believe the actual video evidence of incompetence?

I should have specified medical. Should they have to pass a background check? Yes. Should they have to pass a fitness for duty? Yes. Should their financial disclosures and taxes be reviewed? Yes. Should they have to provide conflict of interest declarations? Yes. Do I think they need to turn over their medical records? No. If they aren't fit for the job, that should be clear on a fitness for duty. No matter how I feel about a candidate, there's no crystal ball to look into the future and the past shouldn't necessarily be held against them.

I don't disagree that Trump is a lying liar who lies. Whether his dislcosures or taxes are accurate is a completely different question.
