Recipe for lazy lasagna casseroleI used Prego Three Cheese pasta sauce. Regular hamburger, regular cottage cheese and I added some crushed garlic and some onion powder, salt and pepper, colby jack and sharp cheddar cheeses. My DH and I both thought the casserole tasted kind of sweet. Is it the Prego? It only has 9g of sugar.

The sweet onion, sometimes cottage cheese is a little sweet.

I didn't use sweet onion. I used a yellow onion.

Maybe? I've never tried that, but I do NOT like sweet tomato based sauces. When I'm using a sauce as a base it must be Classico Tomato Basil.

I didn't use sweet onion. I used a yellow onion. Yellow onions will also cook up sweet. I prefer to buy the yellow or white onions in the bags because they are generally grown for coking and are not so wet, just very non pungent. The larger individually sold red, white or yellow onions are what I learned from the produce manager as “fancy” and are sweeter and can be eaten raw with a pleasing sweet taste.

The Prego is 9g of sugar per serving, not 9g for the full jar, so I suspect that is the source of the sweetness. Cottage cheese does also have natural sugars and even onion powder can have sugar. All of it adding up to a sweet tasting pasta dish.

Yeah, I was going to say the Prego. I find it too sweet for our tastes.

We like Rao's brand and I just looked at their plain marinara. There would be 20g in that entire jar which is a better option.

I hate sweet tomato sauces, blech. I would agree that it is due to the Prego.

Take a look at your store brand marinara. The HEB marinara at my local store has 0g added sugar. (All tomato sauce will have some naturally occurring sugar from the tomatoes, so added sugar is what you're looking for.) I prefer Rao's overall now, but when I was younger and broke and on the "no added sugar" bandwagon before it was cool, I discovered those cheaper store-brand sauces often fit the bill. And honestly, for something like lasagna where there are a lot of other sources of richness and flavor, Rao's probably isn't necessary. Also be aware that basil will make a sauce taste sweeter, so you might consider avoiding sauces with basil in them as well.

The Prego did that to me once. I believe that is the culprit. It is not my regular brand but I bought it once and my pasta was super sweet.

Victoria’s white linen marinara has 4 g of sugar per serving. It is by far the best sauce around. Taste just like my Italian grandmas. It’s the only sauce I buy.

I can't stand Prego or Ragu sauces. Raos is good but my cheap go to is the TJs marinara, 1.99 a jar I think.

Probably the prego. It'd be 9grams per serving probably and a *serving* is much less than we all think.
I can't stand ragu for how sweet it tastes too me, usually don't have an issue with prego but I've never had that specific one. I tend to use Classico tomato basil or Raos.

I also dislike sweet pasta sauces. You would think that we are fairly representative consumers, so you would wonder why there is so much sugar in pasta sauce. We could do with less sugar (and salt) in our food.
