WTF?
Luckily (can you say luckily with cancer?), it’s thyroid cancer…which has a good survival rate. She’s going to have a biopsy to find out which kind it is…we’re hoping for garden-variety, boring thyroid cancer, not the super-aggressive kind. She misses my brother, but she’s not quite ready to join him, yet. (She’s 41). So any good vibes you want to send would be greatly appreciated. And any experiences with thyroid cancer, as well. Thanks!

Lots of prayers that it’s the “simple“ thyroid cancer. I’ve had three friends with it, and they were fine once their thyroid was removed.
How is your teachers paying teachers stint going? I hope it’s going well

I’ve had a thyroid cancer diagnosis this year, after my thyroid was removed in February. My mother went through the same thing last year. It was because of her diagnosis that I had an ultrasound of my thyroid, and learned I had a number of nodules. A fine needle biopsy of several of them did not show cancer cells, but based on my mother’s thyroid cancer, three different doctors encouraged me to proceed with removal. The post surgery report showed papillary thyroid cancer, follicular variant. The margins were clear and it was small enough to be classed as a microcarcinoma. Overall, my mom and I are doing great. I’m curious how they know your SIL has cancer if they haven’t done a biopsy yet? There is a Facebook group called Thyroidectomy Group (the cover photo is a butterfly). I will warn you that that group can be a bit overwhelming at first, as many people share struggles they’ve gone through following a thyroidectomy. You have to keep in mind that people who had no issues are probably not hanging out in a support group. Also, that group covers thyroidectomy for a number of reasons other than just cancer. I am happy to share further thoughts and experiences as she proceeds with her journey – just let me know. ETA: other than the medication I must now take to replace the hormones my thyroid produced, I haven’t needed anything further. Based on my case, the doctor did not want me to do RAI (radioactive iodine) treatment. Chemo is not typically done. I am having a whole body scan next week, which my doctor says is typically done for someone who had thyroid cancer about a year after diagnosis. Mine is a bit sooner due to travel in the new year. One more thing— Remind me where your SIL is located? There is a facility in Tampa, Florida called Clayman Thyroid Center. I’ve seen multiple people mention going there and having a positive experience.

One more thing— Remind me where your SIL is located? There is a facility in Tampa, Florida called Clayman Thyroid Center. I’ve seen multiple people mention going there and having a positive experience. Thank-you for all of the info. My SIL went in for her annual checkup and her doctor noticed that she had an enlarged thyroid and sent her for a scan (I don’t know if it was an MRI or CT). She has 3 nodules. They can tell from the scan that 2 are cancerous (from the way they “present .”) One is not, but is likely to become cancerous in the future. I thought they would just remove the thyroid—but they are going to do a needle biopsy first to determine the type of cancer—which will affect the treatment. That’s all we know (she just found out today). If it is a non-aggressive type, she will most likely have it removed and then just have to do regular monitoring. That’s what we’re hoping for!

I had my thyroid removed because of a large nodule that they couldn’t determine was cancerous. During that time, they told me age was an indicator of whether or not it was an aggressive cancer. I was 36 at the time. They said although there are outliers, the aggressive form of cancer primarily presents in older patients.

Life certainly seems unfair when things like this happen. I hope her cancer is fully treatable and she gets along fine. And I send you a hug just because of the stress of it all.

My mother had thyroid cancer in her 20’s, it was removed, and she took thyroid the rest of her life. But was otherwise fine. I hope the same for your SIL.

Oh geez.. so sorry...
My friend got the same kind and lives pretty normal life now. Just has to take a pill every day at 3am (it has to be at the exact same time, I guess) and she chose 3am because you can't eat/drink 2 before or 2 after. I have no idea if all patients have to do the same, but otherwise she is healthly. Good luck and prayers for your SIL.

I’m so sorry your family is dealing with that monster again, and so soon. My BFF’s DD had it after surviving AML as a child, but thankfully since being treated she has been doing well. I hope your SIL has a similarly good outcome.

Wow, so sorry to hear this. I'll hope for a very nonaggressive type. My mother had thyroid cancer years ago. She had the surgery, I think she had the radioactive treatment, then took Synthroid for the rest of her life. When she died it was because she was 97, not because she'd had thyroid cancer.

I have no first hand knowledge, but my aunt was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had hers removed and has been doing well ever since. That was in 2016.
I hope she makes a full recovery!
