Do you read the comments on social media posts? Or do you just read the post and maybe the article and then move on? I like to read comments so I know what people are thinking, but the comments usually really stress me out because of so much BS and misinformation. But then I feel like I need to comment with accurate information to counteract the BS. It’s a vicious circle. Does anyone else have that problem or are you able to stay away from the comments? If you read them, what are your thoughts about society? If you don’t, any tips on avoiding the habit?

No I don't normally read the comments more than the few that are shown at the bottom of the post.

I try not to read the comments, it's really best not to know what people are thinking these days, but sometimes I slip and can't look away. I do like to believe that it's just keyboard courage with a lot of people though and no one is really that much of an arsehole in real life.

It's rare that I'll read more than a few. Occasionally I'll go a little further and see if the first few are representative of the majority but not often.

I go back and forth...sometimes I go to the comments on things like the FB Reels simply because I know they'll be fun. Or "fun". haha Political posts though are usually a cesspool. A good friend of mine, who is also a church pastor so she's had her share of nasty comments aimed at her, continually reminds me "do not read the comments, do not read the comments, do not read the comments...." I try to take her advice because she is very wise. But sometimes I don't.

I read the comments. Then get mad at myself for responding to the more crazier ones. I really need to stop reading the comments. I really need to get off Social Media completely.

I ALWAYS read the comments otherwise what is the point of reading Social media posts ?
It is interesting to read what others feel about subjects, Some comments are dumb but there are a lot more that are thoughtful & intelligent and very honest some which are very funny,
We live in a time where We are slowly having our freedom of speech taken away from us by the nanny state & it is important that We have a right to comment on social media no matter how stupid they are

I will only read the comments if I have a question that I think someone else might have answered. And that's typically more of a YouTube thing. Because on things like TikTok & FB, I feel like videos are created to purposely mislead, annoy, or confuse just so that you will comment and share.
Otherwise I don't read them, because A. I feel like a good amount of them are either bots or people purposely trying to agitate others, and since B. I don't want to be agitated, I certainly don't want to wind up that way due to people commenting with that specific goal in mind.

Can you elaborate? The more time goes on and I see more and more posts that are either bots or from people who are completely misinformed or just plain nasty, the more I think it should just be that people can’t make comments at all. I know that’s not really practical, particularly on tik tok or other people’s personal posts. But maybe the news posts no? I don’t know. I just think that overall it has probably done more harm than good. We have more access to accurate information and facts now but more misinformation because anyone can say anything and act like it is the truth. And people believe it.

And that's the type of comment that makes me think not reading the comments is probably for the best.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. I too can’t believe how idiotic and misinformed people are, and more so that they are willing to show the whole world just how unapologetically idiotic and misinformed they are. For places like X, Facebook and YouTube, I never, ever comment back even when I know the person well. The ones I know aren’t going to change their minds no matter how many facts you put in front of their faces so it isn’t worth the effort.

Almost always. I'll stop if I'm getting too worked up though; it's not worth the anxiety. I was following one of our local tv stations and I made the decision to unfollow them a year or two ago. I couldn't take the viscous, racist, ignorant comments anymore.

I read them and never, ever comment. I might screenshot something and ramble on about it to a friend or family member though. I never interact with the crazy though.

Not anymore. They can be so very toxic and the amount of misinformation is disturbing.

Yes, I read comments. I get sucked into them. Lot of times, afterwards, I think to myself that I shouldn’t have read them. Some are funny and clever, but others make me wonder what is going on in this world because they are either so misinformed or full of hate towards others. It is easy for me to resist commenting on most of it. Although I am really fighting commenting on Nextdoor. I want to say something, but I dont. When someone said tariffs are like duty-free I wanted to scream!

Never read the comments section. It’s a recipe for high blood pressure.
Our local paper did away with the online comments after each article and we’re all better for it.

I never cease to be amazed at the nastiness and ignorance shown in some comments and I don’t want those people “coming after” me. I don’t read them all, just a few in passing.

I occasionally read them, but rarely get very far before I get irritated. And then I remember that some experts estimate that 30% of social media comments are not genuine (they are from bots, or “Russian paid agents”, etc)

They usually have African sounding names, say “follow” as if they are a business page, and always say things like “we are all voting for Trump” or the like.

But I think we all want to know more about how our/your (if you aren't in the US, maybe things are different) right to free speech is being taken away. I see people saying that but don't really understand where they are coming from.
