... in lieu of the traditional block of the month program. I have become inspired to sew a quilt for the first time in ages and envision a very modern take on this quilt. There is no pattern but rather a quilt recipe - a build your own adventure, as it were - but you need to buy the $40+ book in order to access it. I've read that the photo of this particular quilt in the book is just 4.5" square, the dimensions are hard to read without a magnifying glass, and other comments which have me not want to purchase the book. I know I'll find it all out in time via the guild, but my quilting time and inspiration is very sporadic these days. I want it now. book is available at our library but has been checked out. If you made a Daylesford quilt, I'd love to see it. Also interested in any comments you may have if you purchased the book. Feels like a very expensive non-pattern purchase to me. Here's someone's blog post to show you what the quilt looks like: blueelephantstitches.com/daylesford-quilt/

I love the mix of whimsy and tradition! Have fun watching your version develop. I know from experience Quilting generates more hoarding than production in me. I really admire those who quilt and not just collect.

Oh, I am an expert fabric stasher but really want to carve out some time for sewing again! Life currently has me frequently traveling between mum, almost 93, and DD and her young family. I'm blessed and privileged to be able to do so, but things at home get put on the back burner, especially anything to do with sewing.

I love how unique this quilt is. Though I can see how it might be tricky to keep it from being a cacophonic mess.

When you say Quilt Recipe so you mean the book by Jen Kingwell? I'm a big fan of her designs and colour choices. Unfortunately, the book is quite pricy here in the UK and I would be buying unseen as it's only available from online shops. It's about £50 plus here.
I have another book of hers and a couple of quilt patterns, I'd love to make them all!

wellway Yes, Jen Kingwell's book. malibou There are several examples of completed Daylesford quilts online. I really like some of them and dislike others. I'm guessing that each of us participating in this thread might gravitate toward different ones.

I love the look of that but I don't know what the book would tell you that you (or your guild leaders) can't figure out for free. It looks like a large log cabin quilt with some of the strips incorporating flying geese, pinwheels, 1/2 squre triangles, etc. It would be a fun project for sure!

I am interested in the actual widths recommended for the different "logs" but could just wing it. NOT spending over $40 bucks for that info. I will get it from the guild eventually. Thanks for the inspiration, I may just go ahead and decide widths by myself. I guess it would then be a Daylesford inspired quilt.

I would not pay that kind of $$ for a book to tell me how to do that.
Not knocking the skill involved, but to me, it just looks like a big scrappy quilt.
It seems like you could come up with your own design by sketing out how big you want your quilt and then drawing off sections and making something to go in each section.
I think I might feel different if the colors or patterns were more coordinated. With all of the different colors and patterned fabric it looks like someone was cleaning out their scrap bins.

I've been saving versions of this to my Pinterest Board lately, I think it would be a simple quilt to duplicate without a Recipe. I've been calling them border quilts not realizing they have a name. :-) I would sign up for this sort of "block of the month"

austnscrapaddict It's a type of medallion quilt. I have a very improvisational medallion quilt I started working on 8 years ago and haven't had it back up on my design wall in ages. I still love it, just haven't returned to it. One day! And yes, this is my sort of Bof the M. I never participated in the trad ones for a few reasons. Lack of consistency in seam width made blocks hard to cobble together, fabric choices didn't please my eye, etc. craftedbys - I have been carefully curating a stack of fabrics to use in my quilt. As with all improv work that I do, I won't necessarily know if I'm using a fabric in this quilt until the quilt top is done. I'm going to have lots of options. I'm especially excited by my inspiration fabric.

I’m trying to make time for reboot my projects, and finish them. The time isn’t wasted, I need it to be centered.

I'm especially excited by my inspiration fabric. Can we see it? I admit I'm very intrigued by the look of this quilt. I feel like I'd be able to actually do it. Most likely without a pattern just by a picture but I'm a numbers person (I work in finance). I'd be curious to see your fabrics though.

This is just an improv medallion, working from the center out. Easy peasy for those of us who are fabric hoarders, I mean collectors. This hobby is the only one I spend $ on, and despite bookcases full of fabric, I bought a whole bunch more to go with the inspiration fabric. Happy to share. If you pm me your phone number I will text you some pix. I don't know how to share pix here, but you're welcome to post them on my behalf. xo

Thanks for posting the photos for me, jeremysgirl. It's really embarrassing to think this is a small percentage of my stash, but I do have a lot of options. The look I'm going for is somewhat controlled chaos, a happy energectic vibe. I can't start sewing until I get my sewing room in order. A big project!

I know I've said it but I think these are all good choices. This quilt looks to me like controlled chaos. That's what appeals to me the most. I looked at pics today of various ones and I have to say, I'm *this* close to making one myself.

I love the matryoshka fabric!
My previous answer seems to have disappeared--I'm having a terrible time with ProBoards on my iPad. Do you need to buy the templates and the foundation piecing paper, too? I wonder if you could share the book and templates with some other guild friends to bring down the costs? Or at least look at their books.

Do you need to buy the templates and the foundation piecing paper, too? I wonder if you could share the book and templates with some other guild friends to bring down the costs? Or at least look at their books. Thanks, I love the fabric too! It was part of a giant stack of yardage in a raffle basket at a recent guild meeting. The winner was showing the fabrics to a friend and I happened to walk by. Not knowing the woman, I politely asked if I could purchase this one piece from her. She asked me why I wanted it and I told her that it spoke to my Polish heritage and I thought it would make adorable skirts for our granddaughters one day. She promptly gifted the fabric to me. I had fully intended it for skirts, but I don't think she'll mind if I use it to make a quilt for the fam instead. I may even have enough left over to at least incorporate the fabric into each of two circle skirts down the line. Youngest sister is just a month old... I'm not going to buy the book. I'll either do an even further improvised version of the quilt by deciding my own widths for each addition to the growing quilt, or go step by step and wait for the monthly instructions. There was a description of the first 7 rounds in today's newsletter. I don't do paper piecing. I'm an improv quilter first and foremost, though I can make points meet in a 9 square if need be. Wonky is fine with me t oo. I'll make my own blocks, not all of the ones shown in the quilt, but I'll probably include some flying geese along with wonky stars.

OK, so... After chit chatting with flanz last night via text, I've decided I'm in. *HOWEVER* I need to wait until after the holidays to get started. I have too many loose end projects going right now. With that said, I've been up since 3:30 this morning...and...I've placed two fabric orders and I am still debating a cart full of fabrics from Fat Quarter Shop. I saw Eric Clapton in concert in 2022. It was a bucket list concert. I bought a fab T-shirt. But it is a very heavy fabric which I hate and I managed to shrink it so it's not the most cozy shirt to wear either. I hate that my souvenir is something I don't want to wear...but...this quilt with it's large center? Well it would be perfect for a clip of the front of the T-shirt. So, I've decided that's what I'm going to do. Mine will be something of a music/rock-n-roll quilt. I even ordered novelty guitar fabric this morning. Most of the fabrics I've picked out are very modern, abstract art, grunge sorts of fabrics. But then I got this guitar fabric and some music note fabric just as a touch of whimsy. When all my fabrics come in, I'll post a pic too. But come January, this is going to be my winter project. All I have to say is, thanks flanz, for the enabling. LOL!

Sounds like you're at the Houston Int'l Quilt Festival. I'm guessing it's enormous!

Ok so I've decided I'm jumping in with a January project. I wanted to show my concert T-shirt that kicked my brain into gear about this project. And then I just received this guitar fabric in the mail today. A touch of whimsy for my quilt. And I've been talking with flanz and I've decided on deep reds, golds, black and creamy white for my colors. She sent me a package today of fabrics curated from her stash. That's the third pic. I wanted to see these before I decided on the rest of my fabrics. So I'm going to place another order tomorrow. I also printed off some graph paper and sketched out the first 9 steps of this quilt. So I think I'm set to begin. But cutting and sewing will not start until January. I need to finish the Christmas crafts first. My vote is that we keep this thread bumping as the group who wants to work on this quilt moves along. I want to see everyone's progress.
