I'm currently listening to an American podcast called Ex-Wives Undercover. One of the hosts has said on multiple occasions "I was shitting myself."
In Australia, if someone says "I was shitting myself," it means that they were very scared. The context in what it was said on the podcast leads me to believe that it means something else in the US, but I can't quite work it out.
Another phrase that one of the hosts just used was "I would have pissed myself." The other host then said something like "Yes, a little bit of pee nearly came out." In Australia, if you say something like "I was pissing myself" or "I pissed myself," it means you were laughing really hard.
What do these two phrases mean to you?

1: shitting myself --you were really scared, I'd need to know what context to decide if they might have meant something else. Usually means along the lines of you were scared someone would find out something
2: pissed myself--you were either scared or laughing really hard

“Shitting myself” usually means you are scared. Like when someone is surrounded by three guys, they say “he was shitting himself.” Or if you barely miss getting hit by a car, you say “I was shitting myself”. How did the podcast use it?
“Peeing” usually when you laugh too hard. But it could be used when scared.
ETA - “I shit myself” could also be when you do something badly or mess up.

Hmmm, in that case I will have to go back and try to find the times she said it, to get the context. Because it really didn't sound like she meant she was scared.

Pretty much what you said. I was shitting myself = I was scared shitless. I was pissing myself, in my world, could either be laughing so hard you were pissing your pants or it could be you were so scared you were pissing your pants. It just depends on the context and I (and others I know) use it both ways

Yes, if you can find the original use I'd like to know too. I love these language threads!

Shitting myself: Scared
However, there is a variation of "I shit the bed" which means made a huge mistake.
Pissed myself: Laughing too hard

I’ve heard shit myself and pee myself also used for shock/surprise/flabbergasted. Like, did you see what Betty wore to work today? I about shit myself! — this is much less common than using for scared but I have heard it.

Who knew shitting themselves was so versatile.😆 ETA - That is also a ‘yup, I use it that way’ to FuzzyMutt’s post below of “I shit you not”. They just keep coming. Hahaha.

Perhaps… “I shit you not?” = I am serious, not messing with you (teasing you) or making something up. Usually in dire serious or very very joking way. Examples: (Background- Mom with dead bead baby daddy to friend.) I was looking at the custody mediation email from his attorney and his email address is “Greatdad123!” I shit you not!! Or, “I shit you not, I just bought this damn car for $60,000 and the engine knocks!! Also… in New England- specifically Mass… “Wicked pissah” is super funny. Along the lines of “taking a piss…”

In the US piss/pissed = pee/peed as in literal urine. So Saying I nearly pissed myself that's like saying I nearly wet myself. Usually it's an expression from being surprised or scared.

"No, I'm telling the truth."

It came also be used when they're excited or freaking out maybe with surprise or happiness instead of fear. Oh my gosh, she kissed me and I was so surprised I nearly shit myself. It's gross, but yeah. When I mess something up really badly I'll sometimes say 'well I just shit the bed with that one"
