Treaters to come to your home?
We had our last about 8:30.
Then about 9:20 a group of 16 or17 year olds showed up. I had put our candy in the other room and was cleaning up dinner, etc. If they had shown up an hour earlier they would have hit the jackpot, since we had a lot left over (maybe 25 kids total). So unfortunately the earlier/younger kids don't get as much since I'm afraid of running out of candy.
But I was kind of ticked off so I only gave them a couple pieces each. And one of them--wait for it--didn't even dress up lol. I probably have the same vent each year.

I'm definitely fine with 9pm. Later than that would be very odd for around here, and we'd probably be gone back in by then (We sit outside.) unless it was a very busy night. (This year wasn't busy at all, so we were in by 8:45.)

9. It's 7:40 here and we've had maybe six doorbell rings since 6:00.

I think 9. I don't care if kids or older or dressed up either. There could be a myriad of reasons they don't dress up. As long as they aren't wrecking havoc I don't care. It is one night a year

If I didn’t want to put out candy, I would have turned out my outdoor light and not answered the door.

I have so few (zilch this year/cold and windy). They would have hit the jackpot with me, happy to have them. Would have gave them it all, less a couple saves for me. 😂
As is, I have plans of pawning off the loot tomorrow.

I think 9/930 would be fine by me. But if I wasn't okay with that, I would turn off my lights - which I feel is a universal sign of 'no candy'
I have ZERO issue with teens or even young adults trick or treating -some kids just want to hold onto that childhood fun a little longer and some may have special needs. If they're respectful, I would give them candy. Heaven knows they could be doing much worse than trick or treating...I remember Cabbage Night when I was in high school and teens would go out and egg and TP and shaving cream houses/cars and play all manner of tricks and pranks.
That said, even ONE trick or treater would have been nice tonight - we sat outside from 630-730 getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and then came inside but left the lights on and the Halloween display up (with lights). I think we turned everything off around 10 or so.

We turn our lights off at 9. We are a full sized candy bar house with a bunch of decorations and we go all out, but we also have a little one at home! We let him stay up until about 8:45 and we had our last group at about 8:50.
I don’t care if people don’t dress up or don’t say trick or treat or any of that.

Things around here typically peter out about 8:00 pm so that’s when we turn off the lights outside. Tonight DD was with friends in another neighborhood so I left to pick her up around 8:30 and was surprised that so many of my neighbors still had their lights on. If she would have been here, she would have cleaned up because at the end of the night people in our neighborhood tend to just dump out their bowls with whoever shows up last. And here, we give out the GOOD candy.
I started out the night with 35 full size Hershey bars and only gave out 18, plus the ten I sent with DD to her party.
I have no issue with giving to big kids, really little kids, kids with no costumes, whatever kids. As long as they are respectful and not greedy, they get candy from me. There are so many other destructive things that kids could be out doing on Halloween so if they’re choosing trick or treating, I can live with that.

Our neighborhood starts at 6:00, and our last goblins stopped by shortly after 7:00. We typically get 50ish, and I was prepared with 52 full-size bars with a giant bag of Halloween fruit snacks as back up. I only gave out 28 bars this year.
Sigh. Our neighborhood is growing up.🥲
Th leftovers are going to work with me, and my grad students will reap the rewards!

There are set hours here for trick or treating. 6-8pm. We didn't get any trick or treaters.

Generally kids are done here by 8:00, but we don't have an official end time. Last night, we had been hanging out on the porch and came inside a little after 8. Left a basket of candy outside, hoping a greedy kid would take it all, but that plan failed.
I love the tradition of trick or treat.

My outside lights are set to come on at dusk and off at dawn.
I had 2 teens not in costume at about 8:20. I tried to get them to load up and they insisted on 1 each because they were going to the rest of the houses on my street.

I don't care if the older kids dress up or not. They are out doing something fun with friends. I polled our local Mommy FB group to see if giving out decorated cookies (fully labelled with commercial kitchen/health inspected/ingredients/allergens) would be welcome or tossed. Most responded "where do you live?" "is this for adults only" LOL So I made 148 Halloween printed cookies: We started here about 6:00 with a few trickles and then the rush began. I was completely out by 7:30 so we shut off the lights. And that was even with several completely bypassing our house to hit next door - they have about 10-12 giant skeleton figures that light up/make noise in the yard, music playing, the whole she-bang. So they are a huge draw lol. But the excitement from kids made my day. "Mom I got a cookie!!" "wow these are cool" Definitely a new tradition, and next year I'll be sure to make more!

I would say 9:00 is the latest. I am ready to finish up by then. Although I wasn't open this year (or last) since I have been going with my grandbaby and no one else is home.
I used to get mad at older teens going out, but it doesn't bother me now as long as they are being nice. 9:20 is late and I probably wouldn't have even opened the door at that point.

I love the tradition of trick or treat.Yesterday, I spent the day at Univ of MD, where my DD attends college. We had a Terps Hugs & High Fives event. Last year the kids experienced several deaths by suicides in a short amount of time, plus Israel/Palestine (and there is a large Jewish community at UMD), so they were STRESSED. The group goes and offers snacks, and high fives, hugs, fist bumps, or just there to offer support/words of encouragement. There were kids last year who stayed away bc they werent sure what the group was about so we made sure to get the word out. Some of us wore custumes this year. Anyway, one young international student was happily waiting in line and asked us "is that what Americans do on Halloween, pass out hugs?" she was SO excited and was about to call her mom to tell her when a volunteer let her know that this event offers that, usually its just candy, LOL. she was so cute.

9 pm is the end of trick or treating for me.
And I'm in the "at least throw a hat on or something" camp. You can be 40 and I'll give you candy, but make an effort.
That being said - I still give them candy and I get all the reasons why someone might not be in full costume, but my preference is if you're saying "trick or treat", and I am giving you free candy, hold up your end of the bargain too.

I would say 9ish, and not having costumes doesn't bother me. 9:20pm would have had me shaking my head, but I wouldn't be upset about it.

We usually give out candy until 8:00 or so, then we walk up to our neighborhood bonfire. But this year dh still had some things to prepare for a weekend trip that he and ds are taking, so he stayed home while ds and I went to the bonfire. He said he got quite a few more trick or treaters. Ds and I got home around 9:00 or so, and we turned off the lights then.

We turned off our outside light at around 9:30pm. There were still some kids out, but we figured it was late enough. I considered putting the bowl of leftover "candy" (mostly fruit snacks and rice krispy treats by then) out but didn't bother.
We did one box of the full size candy bars (plus a Cosco size box of fruit snacks and rice krispy treats and a small amount of the "fun sized" candy). I held off handing them out for awhile until around 6:30pm so the older kids would get some. We were down to one bar and I put it aside because I didn't want any kids getting upset because they missed it. Then I was happy to pull it out for one young girl. She was all alone, probably about 12 or so but she was at least 5'10" and I could see in her face that she'd gotten flack for being "too old". So it made me feel good that she got the last full size.

We have set times in our area- 6-8pm. DS ran out of candy after the first hour last night- 125 full size candy bars (actually 112 full size candy bars, 5 tootsie pops, one mini twix and 6 packs of ramen 😂😂). He turned off his porch light and we all went in the house. Kids dont go up to houses without a porch light on.
So, kids coming after we are "done" isnt an issue

We always have the late teens who know you'll empty the bowl for them. I guess because we don't have a ton of trick or treaters - I'm just thrilled when someone shows up.

Aww, that was sweet of you. My 13 year old still dresses up and trick or treats, but now that he has a deeper voice and visible mustache he noticed last night he got quite a bit less candy than my 5 year old boy and my 2 little girls. They would give the other 3 several pieces, and sometimes a handful, and he'd only get one or two.

Those cookies are such fun, cakediva! I haven't participated with ToTing for a few years, but 9 used to be my lights out time and very, very few stragglers came by after 8:30. Our household is pretty early to bed these days, so no one is answering the door after 9.

We have set hours (6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.), and so do all the communities around us (a lot of them are 6:00 to 8:00). No one TOTs outside of that time. We also have the porch light thing. If I was done for any reason at any time, I'd turn off the porch light and go inside.
I have no problem with no costume. I live in an area where a lot of people don't have costumes or anything outside of their normal clothing. We literally have costume drives, but most donations are toddler sized. I give them a crap ton more candy for the sheer bravado of coming out.
