Hello Pea Buddies!
I joined a real life book club last year! I am really enjoying it so far.
I host in January, so I get to pick the book we read in December! :-) I follow the weekly reading threads on this board usually, but I've gotten behind on them.
Last time I hosted, I chose The Second Life of Mirielle West, by Amanda Skenandore. I loved this one.
Here's a list of the books we read this past year in our club.
I put *** by the ones I really liked.
*** Lessons in Chemistry, Bonnie Garmus
*** Remarkably Bright Creatures, Shelby Van Pelt
* The Second Mrs. Astor, Shana Abe
Bird Cloud, Annie Proulx
* The Great Mrs. Elias, Barbara Chase RiBound
* People of The Book, Geraldine Brooks
*** The Second Life of Mirielle West, Amanda Skenandore
** The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, James McBride
*** The Women, Kristin Hannah
* Finding Dororthy, Elizabeth Letts
* There There, Tommy Orange
Suffrage, Ellen Carol Dubois
*** The Christmas Bookshop, Jenny Colgan
Our club is mostly in their mid-60s. I among the youngest at 54. It's a pretty diverse group of well-educated ladies. (One is a PHD in microbiology!) I probably had the most to learn and have read the least amount of books out of all of them. LOL
They are funny, open-minded and don't get easily offended.
Not quite sure what my reading style is ... I usually listen on Audible so that's a plus if it's available there. LOL
I like books with a full, but not too complicated story. A happy ending with surprises and twists are nice too!
My normal books are self-help and how-to books. Which are not good choices for book club. LOL
Can you help me choose a book? Thank you in advance!
******UPDATE 1 ****** (here and PASTED in a post on down the thread)
Thank you all so much for the great book suggestions! My reading wish list got LOTS longer! LOL
I've looked up all of the stories and I narrowed down to these five:
- Winter Garden, by Kristin Hannah
- The Wedding People, Alison Espach
- Nora Goes Off Script, Annabel Monaghan
- The Frozen River, Ariel Lawhon
-Mrs. Nash's Ashes, Sarah Adler
From these 5, my top two are: The Frozen River or Mrs. Nash's Ashes
Given our group of ladies, I think they would like The Frozen River the best, so I will go with that one!
THANKS again Everyone!
******UPDATE 2 ****** (here and PASTED in a post on down the thread)
So, "The Frozen River" turned out to be the PERFECT book choice for my book club! LOL We actually had to postpone our meeting by one week due to snowy, freezing cold weather! LOL
There was still snow on the ground for the meeting and you have to drive past a really pretty creek to get to my house so the setting for the drive over was great! :-)
I made various soups for dinner and DH had a fire going for my guests. It was cozy and warm! There were six of us that braved the cold and only 2 of my favorite members weren't there.
The book was fantastic. Everyone really liked it! We had a great discussion about the ENDING! WHOA! Way to go Martha Ballard! ;-)
We talked about how different she was from many of the women of her time. (Reading, writing, legal issues, practicing medicine, and telling people what she thought!)
It was one of the best discussed books we've had and we stayed on topic for a long, long time! We talked about the book itself and then spun off into our real life stories that correlated to the book.
There were some great twists in the book and it made me happy that I couldn't predict them but overall, to me, the ending was happy. (Except for Burgess and North!) LOL
The book was very detailed and I feel like I visualize the farm and all of the places in the book. I actually listened to it on audible twice! LOL I picked up a lot more the second time though which was cool. I enjoyed the author's notes at the end but would have been ok without them too. It was interesting to hear her process and what things she took liberties with.
Overall an amazing book. Thank you Pea Friends for helping me choose a book!
