I've got a lot of catching up to do over the next month. I try to see most of the films, but there are always one or two that don't interest me or I just run out of time to see. I'm glad to see that The Substance is getting some recognition. It was very disturbing but amazingly acted and I'm rooting for Demi Moore. Here's the list: 2025 Oscar Nominations

I find it disturbing that they still plan to put on this show with all that happening in California right now. The cost of last year’s event alone was $56 million. I would like to see that money be spent helping the people of LA who have lost everything instead of some elaborate show that most people don’t care about.

The last movie I saw in a theater was The Accountant. I can't remember before that

I can't decide if I want to watch Emilia Perez or not. For all the award show acclaim it's received, I've also read some absolutely scathing reviews.

Didn't know it was a musical. That is probably a no-go for me and I'm not a fan.

This tells me how much I am out of tune with Hollywood movies.. I have only heard of a couple of them. There was a time in my life I knew almost every single movie. I'm not into it anymore.
I thought they were going to cancel it? Maybe that was just talk.

My favorite thing about Wicked was Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Glinda. I would love to see her win for that role. The only other movie I have seen in the theater this past year is A Complete Unknown. I thought it was excellent - kind of a big deal for MN, especially the northern part of the state. It would fun to see it win some awards.

As a southern CA resident, born and raised, Hollywood can suck it. Totally dumb to still have the awards show, any of them after what LA/Hollywood etc have been through.

I've only seen one of these. DH and I saw Nosferatu a few weeks ago.
Before that, the last 2 movies we went to see were re-releases for movie anniversaries (The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Mummy).

But it doesn't really get spent on some nebulous "show," does it? It pays for people, equipment and other resources. If they cancel the show, then stuff isn't rented from a business who expects to get that payment every year. Production company that employs people to do lighting and rigging, and everything else. Security preparations with another business who counts on that regular business. Hairstylists, makeup artists, drivers to transport the attendees, the list is endless. Show gets canceled, what happens to the paychecks of the people usually hired to "put on the show?" I'd imagine that, like tax season is good for accountants, show season is good for lots of LA businesses. Some of them may have been affected by the fires and need the employment.

DS works in the LA entertainment industry (in development). LA economy relies on the entertainment industry, there are over 200,000 people employed in some capacity. They are still reeling from the effects of the end of the pandemic. BTW, he also had to evacuate for the Sunrise fire (as did my cousin for the Palisades fire), so I am not immune to what is happening in LA. I think we can all support LA fire victims (financially and with our hearts and souls) while they rebuild and also realize that we also need to support their economy.

I am going to post an excerpt from an article published by Fortune last March. Here is the link: fortune.com/2024/03/09/oscars-2024-cost-goodie-bag/ Please note that the amount of money it costs to host the Academy Awards pales in comparison to the boost it provides to the local economy. In fact, it brings in over 3x the amount that it costs to hold them. Oscarnomics The Oscars cost a fortune to host—but they bring in even more. Advertisers shell out $1.85 million for a 30-second ad during the award show. That’s much less than the $7 million CBS charged for the Super Bowl this year, but the Oscars bring in a respectable $120 million in ad revenue for ABC on Oscar Sunday.
And there’s a chance advertisers get the bang for their buck. During the 2022 telecast, the Oscars audience increased by 555,000 after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, according to Nielsen data released by NBC, helping it draw 16.6 million total viewers that year.
WalletHub estimates that the annual ceremony boosts Los Angeles’ economy by an estimated $170 million, while films that win the Best Picture award get a $7.8 million average increase in domestic sales. The financial impact of the Oscars may not be on par with the billions-dollar boost of Taylor Swift or the Super Bowl—but the show is just as popcorn-worthy.

I understand this but I still think it’s wrong to put on a full blown show. It’s just tone deaf.

I haven’t seen any of the movies but I really hope Cynthia Erivo gets her EGOT! And it’s cool to see my two favourite actors from Succession nominated.

I don't think Wicked will win anything this year (even though I would love it if it won several). I think they'll wait until the second one comes out. Isn't that basically what happened with Lord of the Rings?

I am thrilled about Conclave, I thought it was one of the best films I've seen in years. I'm ambivalent about everything else but surprised that Emilia Perez has so many nomination given everything I've read about it.

They could still have nominations & winners but just announce the winners on GMA like they announced the nominations instead of having a big ceremony, donate the money to the fire relief effort

My daughter rented Wicked, but I fell asleep pretty early on and never saw the rest of it. Movies now days are just blech to me. We used to love to go see a show. Haven't been in the theatre in ages. And one close to me is only $2!

I saw A Complete Unknown on Tuesday. It's really good. I loved the music and history.
That is the only movie I saw that has been nominated for an Oscar.
