My dh and I watched it. Wow! I had no idea that went on. Doesn't put the Mormons in a very good light. Thank you Gennifer for the information. Yes!! aprilfay21 Sara caused a lot of undue strife. That whole camp with the gypsy's was disturbing.

I watched it and was very surprised to learn about the violence of the Mormans. I had no clue about any of it. In general, the American pioneers suffered more than we can ever imagine, but I never really thought they were so brutally attacked by fellow Americans.

It looks like there is also a show on Hulu based on the book. Have you seen it? I'm wondering how it compares to the book. Jon Krakauer is one of my favorite authors, but I think I saw the Hulu show awhile ago. I can't remember details but I would definitely check out the book for sure. I also enjoy Krakauer, and read Under the Banner... it is the history of Mormonism, which I wasn't expecting, but it starts with a murder in a Mormon family, I believe a young mom and her baby.... if I remember correctly, she was murdered by fundamentalist Mormons.... and then Krakauer goes back in time to describe how the religion formed, and why these brothers would have felt it was correct to kill her. I feel like the show on Hulu focused on the murder, not the religious history, but it's been awhile since I watched it. I remember watching the Book of Mormon musical, and had NO idea that Mormonism is the only religion "created" in the US (well, maybe scientology is too). I had no idea about the golden plates, or the reason why the religious leaders had to keep pushing west. It was completely fascinating to me, which is why I read Krakauer's book.

Yes, I think you're right. The book goes more into the Mormon history than the series did IIRC. It's been awhile since I've read the book and seen the series so my memory is a bit fuzzy.

I read one article about this show and it said that the events shown were based on history, but the timelines weren't so accurate.. and they modified some stuff.. so horrible events happened, just not quite the way the show portrays it.
the history of the mormons is not without violence and doing horrible things while preaching something else.
there were a lot of "cults" and utopian groups in the 1820's-1830's.. as it was a time of great upheaval.. lots of migration out of the east coast and the rise of industrial revolution.. somewhat similar to the 1960's. life was rapidly changing and not all got ahead in the mess.

Fluffy fluffy point after watching 4 episodes- it’s nice that they get progressively dirtier as time goes on. If you watched 1883 the women looked like they were wearing Free People clothes and getting daily facials. Looking all glowy up to the end.

I finished it. It was pretty good. I had no idea the Mormon's were such a bad bunch of people (back then). It was so graphic and brutal but I did enjoy it enough to finish it out. The end surprised me.
