WASHINGTON — Unknown numbers of Ukrainians received emails by mistake from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security saying their humanitarian protected status was being revoked and they would have to leave the United States within days, the agency said Friday.

“A message was sent in error to some Ukrainians under the U4U program. The U4U parole program has not been terminated,” a DHS spokesperson told States Newsroom, referring to the Uniting for Ukraine program.

A legal expert added some much-needed context to a ruling by Chief Justice John Roberts regarding a Maryland man mistakenly deported as a "criminal" to a prison in El Salvador, despite evidence.

Roberts ruled Monday to temporarily block a court order that would have required the Trump administration to return 29-year-old Kilmar Abrego García to the U.S. by 11:59 p.m. Monday. The Justice Department then filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court, leading to the Roberts decision.

For now, Garcia will remain in El Salvador.

New York Civil Rights attorney Andrew C. Laufer, Esq. explained on X, "It’s a typical procedural stay. Don’t look too much into it," but some social media users on the left expressed their outrage.

Immigration judge rules that Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported

JENA, La. (AP) — Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil can be deported as a national security risk, an immigration judge in Louisiana ruled Friday during a hearing over the legality of kicking the activist who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations out of the U.S.

Immigration Judge Jamee E. Comans said at the conclusion of a hearing in Jena that the government’s contention that Khalil’s presence in the United States posed “potentially serious foreign policy consequences” was enough to satisfy requirements for his deportation.

Comans said the government had “established by clear and convincing evidence that he is removable.”

Lawyers for Khalil are expected to appeal.And a federal judge in New Jersey has temporarily barred Khalil’s removal from the country.

Khalil, a legal U.S. resident, was detained by federal immigration agents on March 8 in the lobby of his university-owned apartment, the first arrest under President Donald Trump’s promised crackdown on students who joined campus protests against the war in Gaza.

Military contractors pitched a novel way to facilitate mass deportations — simply designate part of a Central American maximum security prison as U.S. territory, Politico reported Friday afternoon.

Former Blackwater CEO Erik Prince and a group of defense contractors unveiled their plan to Donald Trump's White House on how they could help greatly expand deportations to El Salvador, according to the report.

The new proposal also targets “criminal illegal aliens” and seeks to circumvent U.S. immigration laws by designating part of the prison as U.S. territory. It wasn't immediately clear if the White House was receptive to the plan, which the report noted could prove highly "lucrative" for Prince and his team.

Jacob Levy, Tomlinson Professor of Political Theory at McGill University, cautioned in a Blue Sky thread that the case involving a Maryland man the U.S. government acknowledges was "wrongfully deported" has reached a "crisis moment."

In March, Kilmar Ábrego García was accused of being an MS-13 gang member and deported to El Salvador along with others whom the U.S government alleged were dangerous. The deportation was carried out despite a U.S. judge telling the government that it could not deport García to El Salvador.

During a press conference with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele on Monday, the Associated Press reported that Trump passed the buck to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who said she would "facilitate" García's return by ensuring a plane was available. Bukele, however, said he would not release a terrorist to the U.S.

"I had been doubtful that we were going to have a 'this is the crisis moment' with Trump, as opposed to 'everything about this is a destructive catastrophe.' But the Abrego Garcia case is the crisis moment," wrote Levy in response.

#1, who are these criminals?!? I've never heard news stories about the 'subway pusher' or stories about drivers running pedestrians over willy-nilly... have any of you? Sounds like one of Dump's 'some people say...' stories, to me.

#2, he doesn't GIVE A SH!T about what 'the law' says... if he did, he wouldn't be doing MOST of the stuff he's doing.

#3, Why El Salvador? To me, it sounds like it's ONLY to get them out of the country and make it more difficult for the actual LAWFUL due-process events to take place. Otherwise, shouldn't he be giving his buddies running the for-profit prisons the extra business?

^^^  he only cared about it when the criminal in question was HIMSELF.  Boy, THEN, he was all about due process, and the benefits of following the law till its bitter end.  But not for anyone else.
