It took us almost one hour to get home from the fireworks, which were less than 1.5 miles away.

We used to do a small town one on the Oregon coast just for that reason. It's stayed pretty local and was always a lot of fun. My parents have since moved but my brother and his kids are still there. Maybe we'll do it again, we talk about it often. We avoid the big crowds now.

Cricket, I've been to Sweetwater many, many times. My greatgrandparents lived there. I've also gone to the car shows they have on the Saturday before Mother's Day. Do you live there? Hi, Airforcemomof1! No, I do not. I live in teeny tiny Philadelphia, TN, which is up the road from Sweetwater. I spent my formative years in Athens, which is southwest of Sweetwater. Athens has big fireworks with big traffic. Philadelphia has amateur fireworks. There's no traffic, but there's also no organization. Sweetwater is lovely. --Cricket My greatgrandparents are buried in Philadelphia at Sunnyside church. Not sure if it is still called that. I am familiar with Athens, as well.

I don't go either for the same reason - the insane, unruly crowds. I also live in a large urban area, and it's too much of a free for all for me to deal with.

I'm not a big fan of crowds, so I avoid a lot of festival type events. I don't mind concerts or sporting events, since you have assigned seats and don't feel crushed. I also hate the heat, so rarely go to summer parades or fireworks./quote] This. We don't live in a small town anymore, but even when we did, I avoided large(ish) public gatherings. As I've gotten older, I've grown to really dislike them to the point of being uncomfortable. The San Diego County Fair is going on not far from here now. Each time were on the freeway and see the long line of traffic waiting to exit at the ramp that leads to parking (let alone the view of the parking lots themselves - PACKED), I can't imagine why people would subject themselves to it. <Shudder...> Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well, THAT attempt at a quote obviously was a fail! LOL!
