My husband who served in the Air Force once took great care to make sure I knew the difference between Veteran's Day and Memorial Day: Veterans Day is to honor ALL who served, Memorial Day is to honor those who lost their lives while serving.
The idea that we have too many holidays in the US really is absurd I thought he was big on making America Great Again - which means celebrating those things that make the USA awesome and one of those things is our military

Out of curiosity, how many public holidays do you have?
ETA - I googled and it told me 11. England and Wales have 8, Scotland has 9 and Ireland has 10.

But only the government observes all of these holidays. Private businesses are not required to. Many companies do not observe any holidays between New Years and Memorial Day (May). I have lots of friends who do that long stretch with no official holiday unless they take personal time off. The company I work for does not close for Juneteenth, Columbus Day, or Veterans Day. Instead, they swapped Columbus and Veterans Day for the day after after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

We don’t observe public holidays the same way here. Almost nothing is actually closed. Generally the banks and post offices are. But most Americans go to work or school on those days.

That’s a bugger! Yeah, can’t have the workers having too many holidays, you know. Cuts into the shareholders’ profits.

Who actually gets all those days paid off? Just federal employees, right? I saw a clip where the Orange Menace was ranting about how we have too many paid holidays. Our schools don't get Juneteenth or Columbus off. Obviously several of those days are worked into school breaks. My husband works in the private sector and gets only 5 of those holidays paid and off.

I work in the private sector and get most of those days off. The only ones I don't get are Veteran's Day and Columbus Day. I also get Black Friday off. I know I'm lucky to have lots of holidays.

My DH is a banker and he gets all of them off. We're very lucky that he has so many holidays during the year. His bank also closes at noon on Good Friday.

In the US: (obviously, essential medical type jobs always work and we usually have some convenience stores and an occasional restaurant/bar open. Also, movie theatres tend to open in the evening on major holidays)
--New Year's Day: schools and non-retail businesses closed. Movie theaters are open.
--Martin Luther King's Birthday: Banks/post offices and many (majority?) of the public schools have off--but not all take it off. Most businesses and retail are open.
Presidents Day: Banks/post-office and most (I think) public schools have off. Most businesses and retail are open.
Memorial Day: Schools and pretty much everyone but retail are closed.
Juneteenth: Pretty new. If schools are in session, they have this day off in some states. Banks/post-office closures. Retail and most businesses open.
Independence Day: Everyone but retail and some retail are closed.
Labor Day: If schools are in session, they are closed. Most businesses closed. Most retial open.
Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples Day): Bank/USPS and many schools have this off. Kinda like MLK day. Most businesses and retail open.
Veterans' Day: Banks/post-office and some schools have off. Most businesses and retail are open.
Thanksgiving Day: Most everyone has it off but some retail is open.
Christmas Day: Most everyone has it off
I think most of the other holidays are more regional. Here in Minnesota, we always get Good Friday off, and sometimes Monday, but in other places, the Jewish holidays are taken off. My kids go to a district with a large Muslim population. They get Eid off, but they don't call it that. It is just a random day off. LOL. Can't be "woke" but also hard to have school when 1/3 or more of the kids are absent. Around here, most places are closed on Easter if they are open on Sundays.
It is ridiculous to say we have "too many" holidays when retail gets like two to three days off a year, most regular businesses and schools get about 5 or 6 days off and at the most, banks/postal type places get like eleven days off; I would imagine that Trump thinks everyone takes off all those days---as he seems pretty disconnected from the lives of regular people--to the point he thinks 15 year old girls have dolls, "groceries" is an old fashioned term and we all just can't wait for the glory days of working for a factory for generations.

Some places still take off Lincoln's Birthday.

As a kid, I remember we had both Lincoln’s and Washington’s Birthday off. And then they combined it into one Presidents’ Day. We also didn’t start school in the fall until after both Labor Day and California Admission Day. Kids now start school in August. They still get Labor Day off.
My company is pretty generous. We get 11 paid holidays, plus two floating days. So a total of 13 days. We used to get Columbus and Veterans Day off, but they swapped those days for the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

Sometimes when kids have the day off for holidays like Columbus Day or Eid or a Jewish holiday it is just for kids, not for teachers, support staff, custodians, etc.

Apparently he has signed an order as of last Monday.. Trump declares 2 new national holidays — as he bemoans 'we already have too many',Daniel Hampton May 5, 2025 8:28PM ET President Donald Trump took to his social media platform Monday evening to double down on his plans to celebrate the end of World War I and World War II in the United States by designating specific "Victory Days" for each conflict. He wrote on his Truth Social app last week that he would rename May 8 as "Victory Day for World War II," aligning with the European observance of VE Day, and Nov. 11 as "Victory Day for World War I," the date of the armistice in 1918. Trump has also floated renaming Veterans Day to "Victory Day for World War I," but the White House walked that back facing backlash from veterans' groups and others. On Monday, he doubled down on the idea — but warned Americans not to expect more time away from the office. www.rawstory.com/trump-holidays/

Our union did “trade” Columbus Day for the day after Thanksgiving (which I am glad abojt since I don’t want to celebrate Columbus Day anyway)so I’m counting it still as an equal number of holidays.

Many school districts around here like to give some of those holidays off to kids, but require teachers to come in for professional development. That was always fun.
The district I worked in also had days off on either Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur (not both) and called it the fall holiday. In recent years they also have Eid off if it falls during the school year. It's a very diverse district. IIRC Indigenous Persons Day (formerly Columbus Day) and Veterans Day were a couple that the kids had off but teachers didn't. Also Easter Monday some years - no school for kids, but training for teachers.

Oh wait, this year they have cancelled all: Dawalli, Eid, Yom Kipper and Rosh Hashana.. and Good Friday. That's why the kids were gone that day...
