Curious what peas do when getting ready for various vacations…(if anything!) (I just booked a couple appointments which made me think of it)

I don't know if this is the type of answer you are looking for, but I tidy up the house a bit before we leave. It is nice to come home to a clean house. We also take care of whatever bills need to go out. And we stop mail delivery.

Book cat/lizard sitter and dog boarding Schedule wax, manicure, pedicure Shop for any needed clothing, etc Set OOO message Make work coverage plan Turn on vacation schedule for a/c, lights, etc. Vacation hold on mail Let neighbors know we're out of town Reschedule cleaning service to come right before we leave rather than while we're gone
I'm sure there's lots more but those are the things that come to mind.

Finalize any reservations and make sure we have all needed info for accommodations and transportation during the vacation. Book pet sitter (actually did that a month ago - she's busy). Leave instructions for pet sitter including putting dog's pills in pill sorters and leaving out toys/chews to be distributed. Make sure there are adequate amounts of dog food and medication. Assemble appropriate capsule wardrobe - it's become a game with me to see how little I can get away with bringing. Make sure house is clean and laundry done/put away. Harangue one of my daughters to come and water my outdoor plants. Move most of them under the patio cover in case said daughter "forgets." (Wilted is better than fried in the Houston sun.) Do my best to use/eat up everything perishable in the fridge. Toss any produce, milk, or leftovers remaining before we leave. Pre-book Uber or airport parking. Complete any necessary travel documentation with the airline.

Pack my bag and head out the door. HAHA
Seriously though I am not much of a planner but this is kinda what I do depending how long I am gone
Dog arrangements Clean house/laundry all done Pack bag as late as possible (for me if I pack early I end up forgetting things. Packing all at once I do better)
That's about it other than stuff do final while on vacation, reservations/rentals/etc.
Edited to add: Mail/dog, this kind of stuff, I have adult children who are around can take care of these things. I don't usually stop the mail, in fact I can't even remember the last time I have stopped mail. But like I said, usually one of the kids are around to watch over the house/pets/mail.

We have a neighbor behind us who is a retired policeman from Oakland. We've become great friends and early on he said not to stop our mail or newspaper. He collects them for us. He's heard too many stories of people finding out that way that you'll be out of town for a certain period of time. Luckily he doesn't like to travel. His wife travels all the time with friends so he is always available when we travel.
We always travel with copies of our passports, credit cards, health cards, driver's licenses, etc. We take advantage of the room safes.

Pack my bag. Paint my toenails, shave my legs. Ask my sister to come feed the cats. Plug the lamp in to a timer that will come on in the evening. Scoop cat litter, clean out fridge and take out garbages the day before I leave.

Do the laundry and dishes. Pack for myself, my mom, and the dogs. If it is wintertime, turn off the water to the house, drain the pipes, and turn off the hot water heater to minimize the risk of a pipe freezing, bursting, and flooding the house while we are gone. Clean out the fridge. Take the trash to the "convenience center," aka, dump. Get gas for the car, make sure it doesn't need any maintenance. Put in a hold mail request.

I print out my list of itemized things I need to pack. It contains everything from toothbrush, Medicines, bathing suit etc. and check off the things I pack. I tend to pack in stages so that helps me remember what I need and what’s already packed.

I have a Tripit itinerary that I share with my family so they know my flight numbers, hotels, what we are doing, etc.
I also do a google doc of details, like how to get to different places, things I might want to see, all sorts of info that I gather from reddit/tripadvisor, etc, even here!
I save all of my hotel, flights, tour confirmations in a folder on my computer.
When someone asks where I stayed years ago in a city, or info about it I can pull that info up very quickly and give them the info I have.
I do 99.99% of the travel preparation for us.
Next stop-Grand Canyon and Sonoma this weekend, short 4 days--my kids have those pesky jobs to get back to.
In June almost a week in Europe which started with getting tix to see Bruce Springsteen (for the umpteenth time), this time in Prague, then doing several cities in Austria, then Hungary including the mountains there and ending with a wedding in Scotland (that I will only know two people).
I also have a "mile-long" get-ready list that I have tweaked over the years.

I have trouble packing until the last minute because I have a fear that I may need something I have already packed and I will forget to re-pack it! (I had that same fear X 1000 when we last moved homes 19 years ago).

We're in vacation prep mode right now. We're rounding out our summer wardrobe more because we changed over from winter to summer clothes but our vacation is motivating us to get it done now. On deck is: - taking inventory of the toiletries and sunscreen & pick up anything we need.
- getting a manicure & pedicure and my hair trimmed.
- pull our suitcases out of the storeroom.
- make sure everything is tidy before we leave.
- I might add a movie or shows to my ipad in case the in-flight entertainment system isn't working.
- clean out the fridge and get rid of trash & recycling.
- we pack the night before and get take out for dinner.

I’m so fortunate my son still lives at home. He is a pleasure to be around and I’m savoring this bonus time. I’m also beyond grateful that we (my guy and I) can travel like crazy people and our home and elderly family dog are safe and cared for. There is no one in the world who loves and takes better care of our dog. She’s 12/13 and my son dotes on her. Son is in the “working hard” era of apprenticeship, so he gets little time off, and spends most of it chilling locally. Somehow I raised a townie lol
I decide what time I need to leave the house, and I pack last minute.
The end 😊

Do research about the area. Make a list of things I want to do, where I want to go, etc... I put them in order of priority.
Air out my luggage.
If flying, make airport drop off and pick up arrangements.
Plan what clothes and shoes I am taking.
Make a list of items that I need to take >>phone charger, lap top charger, medication,etc....
The week before, log into the bank and activate-schedule the vacation dates on my debit and credit. That way when I use the cards out of state, my card transactions won't be red flagged or declined for suspicious activity.
The day before, I will check my po box.
Last thing before departing home.....adjust the thermostat.

It depends a bit on the vacation - how long I’m going away for and why.
Beach week - pack essentials and go. DH does all our travel reservations. We tend to play it by ear what to do, see and eat. Book mani and pedi for a day or two before departure.
Sightseeing trip, 1-2 weeks - again, DH takes care of travel and accomodation. I research things to do and see and book in advance if it seems necessary. I have packing lists including medications and electronics (last year I forgot my Apple Watch charger when we went to Venice!) All plans go into TripIt. Sightseeing schedules might change, depending on weather and other circumstances, but at least it’s a list of plans.
Home to visit family - usually a longer trip, but less advance planning in what I’m going to do. Check all medications at least a week out, so I can get new scripts if needed. Contact my cleaner to let her know I’m away - she needs to bring the key if I’m not there. I have both summer and winter packing lists, which get updated regularly. Contact people I want to catch up either and let them know I’ll be in town. Organise an eSIM for while I’m there, though often I’ll do that on arrival.

Besides the obvious - mostly already mentioned - I have a few must dos.
I change the sheets on my bed (the day before if we’re leaving super early) so we come home to fresh made bed. And I put some kind of heat-and-eat meal in the freezer so we can have something decent to eat until I get to the grocery store for fresh food.

Oh, one I forgot - since DH and I often travel by ourselves and leave our young adult kids in Houston, I created a Google “just in case” doc with instructions for what to do/who to call if we perish in a fiery crash somewhere. Morbid, but feels necessary. I check to make sure it’s up to date before we leave.

Haven't gone in years but eating the perishable so they didn't go to waste. Clean house as much as I could because it's nice to come home to clean house. Get pets all set for us to be gone, whatever all that entails.
And I'd buy something we could have for a quick dinner the day we got home and breakfast the following morning(maybe even fo the next days dinner to) last thing i wanted was to go to the store.

It depends. If we are traveling somewhere where I cant easily get to a store, I make a packing list on a huge easel pad, color-coded by person, with a column for things used by multiple people (sunscreen, for example).
If we are going somewhere with shopping nearby, I just pack from memory.
I arrange someone to water the outdoor plants if it is that season, we will heavily water the indoor plants and then fill the watering bulbs we have in them.
I let a neighbor know we will be gone and who they could expect to see at the house while we are gone.

I have my house clean and the fridge emptied of perishables. Before that, I keep an itinerary on a Google Sheet including flights, hotels, ground transportation, and activities. I share this with my family. I notify my neighbors that we won't be home. Depending on how long I'm going, I stop the mail.
I have a list of things to pack and a worksheet of what I'm wearing each day so I can pack lightly. Both are in plastic sleeves, and I write on them with a dry-erase marker. I keep toiletries and electrical cords packed so I can throw them in my bag.

For a beach/warm weather vacation I:
-manicure and pedicure - wax - fresh highlight - I used to do a spray paint tan but can’t do them anymore - I always increase my workouts and try to lose a few pounds… - I try not to buy any clothing etc…but always end up buying a new coverup, sun hat etc
For the house: - clean, take out trash, clean out fridge - get rid of fresh bouquets in house - gonna start changing my sheets - water plants

I put some kind of heat-and-eat meal in the freezer so we can have something decent to eat until I get to the grocery store for fresh food. We have the same tradition with our kids that my parents had when I was a kid---and that's to eat at a local restaurant when we arrive home. That was so fun when I was a kid, and it made coming home feel less of a bummer. But as a grown-up, by the time we get home and we've dealt with traffic, transportation, and crowds, I'd be perfectly happy to just go straight home , so I'm absolutely saving this idea for when we're no longer traveling with kids.

I always go shopping because I never have anything to wear! 🤣
I always print off a day by day itinerary or a calendar that I can have in front of me. I’m old school!
