Because you do not need as much as you think. Repeat that mantra when you pack: “I do not need as much as I think!” No one is watching what you are wearing so you can wear clothes over and over again. If it’s not dirty or doesn’t smell, put it back on. No one is judging your outfit. Everyone you meet is doing the same thing anyway. Plus, you can do laundry pretty much in every hostel in the world and, if not, there’s always a laundromat nearby. I’ve never ever had a problem washing my clothes when I travel. To help you avoid over packing, get a backpack that is only carry-on size. It will force you to be minimalist with what you take. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t go with you.
ETA: My first trip to Europe lasted 3 weeks. I forced myself to take only 4 clothing changes. It can be done. I did take 21 pairs of panties though. (OCD on clean underwear!) I reminded myself many times that those other tourists don't know that I wore the outfit before.

I am the Queen of overpacking! I should just cut my clothing list in half, but I just can’t. TFS!

I can pack light when I need to. We go to a very familiar place in the Algarve quite regularly and we only take hand baggage and I know where we’ll eat, I know the ‘style’ of the places around, etc so I can keep it light. Also for city breaks…I can do fairly minimal packing. But the thing is - I like having clothing choices 😊 So if Dh has space I will add a few more items so that I have more options, particularly if it’s somewhere new to us.

I am the Queen of overpacking! I should just cut my clothing list in half, but I just can’t. TFS! I am too, we rarely travel and if we do it's by air so I was very upset when southwest announced it was charging for bags. I've been pondering just taking a carryon for an upcoming trip to Charleston. I love having the room to pack what I want, but hate having to haul it around when we get to our destination but can't check in. I too have been known to bring multiple pairs of underwear for just a few days travel, especially if it's going to be hot. So while I may be able to get by with a carry on for Charleston you know I'll have mulitple pairs of underwear stashed in various spots - and we're only going for 3 days!

We tour with basically the same core group on our Europe trips. At the meet and greet a month before a trip, we encourage people to wear the same clothes multiple days. We're allowed one medium suitcase to check and one small carryon. Last trip, we packed old underwear and threw them away at the end of the day. Same with socks. I use my FoodSaver to pack small bags of underwear/socks to save space. It works well. Our trips are typically 15-19 days so we're not going to go with just a carryon. But packing cubes make a huge difference.

I am excellent at packing in only a carryon plus my backpack. It doesn't matter how big or small the trip. For longer trips I do bring along Norwex laundry strips so I can either sink wash stuff like bras and undies or do a full load if we are somewhere with a washing machine. Some tricks are to make sure all your tops can mix and match with all of your bottoms. The same goes for shoes. Also, decant your toiletries into smaller containers.
PS - Compression packing cubes are a game changer!

We leave for Italy this evening. I have four outfits that can mix and match, and two pairs of shoes, for 10 days. (I do have enough underwear for that amount of time.) Both of our AirBnBs have a washer we can use if needed.

I keep repeating this to myself, as we continue to go home realizing we've used less and less of what we brought. Growing up, my mom would never dream of doing laundry while on vacation. So we'd schlepp home trash bags full of two or more weeks of dirty clothes and have to wash them ALL when we got home. Of course, this was a side-effect of having so. many. clothes. as well. And she'd want us to save out nicest stuff for the actual full vacation days, so we'd wear out most ill-fitting clothing on the travel days---fun! And when I started off traveling with kids, I did the same, each day had a little bag with a full outfit, plus I'd pack extras, as well, and DH said to me "We *can* wash clothes, you know." And I was like "Oh yeah, we can." It's was such a foreign concept to me.

years ago, my gs troop (all 4 girls) and I went on a girl guide trip around new zealand in their winter. we all had backpacks (small ones) and a carry on. that's it. plus one duffel for the 6 of us carrying the sleeping bags and my ski boots. we were on a big bus and they had learned to do with less. two weeks and layers
the problem I have now for longer trips is I have to take my contact solution and I can't get a big bottle on a carryon.. and can't count on finding it on our trips.

Honestly it's not the clothes - it's all the other stuff people pack that takes too much room. We went to Greece last summer for 10 days and I easily packed in a carry on and probably only rewore a couple skirts and a dressy dress that was only worn for dinner. Especially for summer, clothes are small and squishy! We went to Brussels and Barcelona in the spring for 10 days and it was a bit tougher, but if you wear your big shoes, it's not that tough. I am a carry on only devotee, but never do laundry and also really enjoy fashion, so am far far from a minimalist and truly have no issues - tanks and sundress are small! add a a couple toppers and they can go far!

Honestly it's not the clothes - it's all the other stuff people pack that takes too much room. I agree. Even despite my story of packing new clothes for every day, it was always the non-clothing items that made things crazy. We'd all have one bag of our own, or else one shared piece for DH & I and one shared one for the kids, and then we'd have endless other bags and "stuff", depending on the stage in our life. Especially when driving somewhere. Pillows and blankets in the car, picnic basket, cooler, tablecloth and grilling implements, toys, strollers, fans, pack-n-pays, portable VCR player/DVD player and all of the tapes/discs, kites, sand toys, a whole bag of medications, repellant, first aid type stuff. Diaper bags. And we definitely packed more during the times of life when we had less disposable income. Because if we already had OTC meds, we'd pack them rather than possibly have to buy them at a higher price if we needed them while away. Or we'd pack toys and books to discourage the kids from asking for new crap everywhere we went. We'd pack food so we could eat breakfast in the room and snacks while out and about. We'd pack stuff in case we have a rainy day or a time when the kids are bored.

Most of my trips are by air. The only item that I must take / wear, is my *lucky* top. 🤪 I used to have a lot of anxiety about flying, hence the lucky top. It’s a pink short sleeve polo. I only wear it on day 1 and the return day. If it’s cold, I wear a cardigan over it. Wash it when I get home and leave it hanging until it’s needed again. Other than that shirt, I generally pack light enough for just a big carry on.

It’s funny I used to be the MOST minimal packer - but these days? Nope. For big trips I do a big checked bag and pack all the shoes and hats that I want haha.

This is such a personal choice, so I'm not hating on whatever people choose regarding checked or carryon. I can tell you why we personally do not like checked luggage. We have had some bad experiences with lost luggage, even with the airtags. DH is 6'3" and has had his luggage lost going to China and going to Europe. The Europe trip was a 2 week, multi-city work trip. His luggage literally followed and missed him by a day or 2. He ended up having to buy all new clothes in Italy and it wasn't easy finding pants long enough. He ended up coming home head to toe Hugo Boss. He looked like he walked off the set of Jersey Shore. The lost luggage in China was less funny. They didn't have any pants that worked for his long legs. We do carryon only going to our destination. Outfits are coordinated so that pants/shorts can be worn with more than one top. I pack one extra pair of shoes. We have done 2 week Europe vacations and had no problem with just going carryon. In fact, we were glad we did because not every train station has elevators and lugging big heavy suitcases upstairs wouldn't have been fun. Coming home is a different story. We tend to check a duffle bag with dirty clothes so we can free up luggage space for any souvenirs. Sometimes we even check more than one bag coming home. As others have said, it's all the other stuff that takes up space. I keep my makeup simple, tend to flat iron my hair so that I don't have to bring all of my curly hair products. Travel snacks and electronics go in the backpack. After almost 29 years of traveling together, we have our system down.

I've dragged my suitcase up too many metro steps and hoisted it into overhead train car racks to take one single thing I can avoid taking. I've done a comparison of packing cubes vs. compression bags, and they are equal if you pack them correctly.
I decant toiletries into small pots and keep everything minimized. I take 5 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, 2-3 pairs of shoes, 10 pairs of underwear, and laundry sheets to wash in the sink. Each piece must go with all the other pieces. A few accessories change up the looks. We travelled in Europe for a month with just carry-ons and backpacks.

the problem I have now for longer trips is I have to take my contact solution and I can't get a big bottle on a carryon.. and can't count on finding it on our trips. Nothing is required to be in it's original commercial container. So you decant the contact solution into 100ml (3.4 oz) containers. You can take as many of those as will fit in a quart bag. A full 12 oz bottle's worth should fit in the bag easily. Then buy your shampoo etc at your destination or buy them as solids. Yes, you can get toothpaste tablets, bar shampoos/conditioners and most other toiletries in bar/tablet forms. There has been consideration of allowing full sized contact solutions in carry on but not sure where that is at right now.

Went on a work trip once. I had forgotten people don't know how to pack "light" It was a 4 day trip. 2 days of travel (to/from) and 2 days of seminars. One of my collogues packed 6 full outfit changes because she couldn't decide what she might want to wear plus a different pair of shoes for every outfit. Since it was late October all footwear was boots or pumps.. no flats or sandals. A few different sweater or jacket options. Couldn't decide how she wanted to do her make up or hair so a good sized suitcase for that. She had two hefty suitcases to haul around and check plus a carry on and personal item (Purse). My other colleague and I are very light packers. We each had a carry on plus our purses. The first colleague wanted us to help her with her bags. That was a hard "pass" for us. I had one night gown, wore one dress and packed a second one. So one dress was worn for travel day, rinsed out in the sink and hung to dry to be worn on seminar day 2. The other dress was worn on seminar day 1 then travel day home. One pair of shoes for all four days and one pair of flat mule style house shoes. I do pack one extra set of undies in case of an unanticipated appearance of Aunt Flo. A very basic shawl since the forecast was for chilly evenings but not freezing weather (it was New Orleans not northern Canada) Pack all you want! Just don't ask me to deal with your luggage. The next year she got it down to one checked bag. Pretty sure if we had helped her with her bags the second year would have been just as over packed.

The problem I always run into is packing for highly variable weather. Yes, layers, but it can still be difficult to pack light enough to cover all weather conditions in some areas at certain times of the year. And the footwear! I want tennis shoes for walking, boots for certain outfits, sandals for other outfits, heels for a nice dinner out, and slippers for lounging. I generally have to compromise in a way I don't enjoy.
ETA I'm not doing laundry while I'm traveling so there will be a pair of underwear for every single day I'm there plus several extra, in case I get hot and sweaty or whatever. Worn ones go in a plastic grocery bag to be easily dumped into the washing machine when I get home.
I roll everything when I pack to make it fit better. Usually one pair of jeans, one pair of pajamas, 2 sweats, 4 t shirts, a sweatshirt, jacket, and a few dresses and leggings. Socks and an extra bra or two.
Then makeup and toiletries.

Double check, but I believe contact solution counts as "medically necessary," so you just need to show it to TSA. A lot of brands do sell travel sized bottles though, so that may be an option as well.

One thing not mentioned is packing only carry on tends to be rather sizeist. I can tell you, my medium tops and size 8/10 jeans take up a lot less room in my bags than my 2x tops and size 20/22 jeans did.

DD just returned from her study abroad trip to Barcalona. She was there for 10 days. I had to go to her apartment to help her pack because that girl packs way too much. Plus she doesn't know how to get it all to fit. She had a different outfit for each day plus some extras for once they were done with their daily activities. I think her age group think about social media and posting photos, so they can't have the same thing being shown in each photo .
When she came home before she left, we were still moving things around from her main luggage to her carryon. Then I had to get her to agree to leave a pair of wedges, a pair of jeans and her jean jacket behind.
I told her next time, she needs to get some light sundresses. They are easy to pack, light weight and can be dressed up or down.

Because I’d always worry about something happening and the difficulty of buying a new pair of shoes in my size while traveling, I’d never travel with only the one pair I have on. Not every shoe store is going to carry a larger-than-average size. Plus, because I have big boobs and require a substantial bra, I’d not be wearing "light sundresses" and I’d have to have at least one extra bra, as, again, I wouldn’t be able to just run into any store and find my size.

during the pandemic I could not find travel sized contact solution bottles. I was going on one trip overseas and didn't want to pack it in the big luggage as it was essential so i looked up all the tsa info and had my medical argument ready.. and it did not work . I talked to the tsa agent, then got to talk to the hazardous materials specialist.. (looked like a border patrol guy with all the protective gear.). turns out that the hydrogen peroxide in contact solution is NOT permitted as medical.. as they don't know the concentration and it is considered bombmaking material.. they said they purposely kept the website vague.. cause I complained bitterly about how was I supposed to know that? no way. fortunately, I had a tiny folding backpack in my carry on so I had to exit tsa, put the bottle in the backpack, go back to check in, check in the tiny backpack, go back through tsa.
so that turned out to be a fun day. I cannot decant contact solution.. as it is very very important to have a high standard of cleanliness.. perfectly fine for shampoo.
now I can find the small bottles.. but it is tough to pack several in my little quart ziplock if I want to do carry on for more than one week.

I am a pathologically light packer. My favorite thing is the rolling carryon that fits under an airline seat - can't nobody tell me I have to gate-check my carryon now! Keeping track of a million things is hard for me, so I prefer to travel light.

I used to take a twisted sense of pride in knowing I could pack super light and it would be totally ok.
I combine alot of trips so it's not unusual for me to work/visit/hike/camp/fish/workout/sightsee/beaches/golf/great dinners etc all in one weekend/week!
Also, I do a ton of travel for work and personal and gained a bunch of "status." Status = free bags! And let me tell you, it's nice not to have bras and leggings hanging all over the bathroom. It's nice to have your "good boots" rather than make due and stub your toes on rocks in sneakers. Wear the cute shoes. Have different bags that match different outfits.
Life is challenging enough. I like to have clean underwear and the smallest bag possible isn't a gold medal I'm worried about.

Everyone will know, because they would see what I am wearing in my scrapbook layouts. Years ago, I got a new outfit.....I wore it several times over month or two (girls night out, lunch with a friend, at the bar with high school friends, to watch the school play, etc....), I-we took photos during the various outings.....then I scrapbooked and I look like I only own one outfit. If I travel, I'm packing an outfit for every day.

When we used to travel we used packing cubes and rolled our clothing into the cubes. We would also take socks that we were ready to throw out. We would wear a pair for a day then throw them out at the end of the day. If you each do this for a week you can make more room in your packing cubes.

This is good timing because I leave Wednesday for London. I hate being uncomfortable so I overpack. I did buy the bags you suck the air out of. I’m pretty good about shoes. I ordered a carryon backpack style bag that’s not here yet so we’ll see.

I was poking through the last couple December Dailies and I was wearing the exact same PJ's on a special night, three years in a row (unintentional!) I immediately threw them away, even though I like them
