but never did. Or maybe you did take up something in your later years?
I would have liked to do ceramic art. I did a little potting years ago and I'd have loved to take it up later in life but now my life doesn't have space for it. Same goes for painting. I did a lot when I was younger then it fizzled out.

It's funny you should say this because Jeremy's DD who is a college student and is living with us this summer is an interior architecture major. She was talking just this weekend about taking a ceramics class. Jeremy was like, I am totally going to create pottery before I die. I was shocked, I tell you.

Quilting - I know it's not too late, but I feel like it is and I really don have room for it.

Quilting - I know it's not too late, but I feel like it is and I really don have room for it. It's totally not too late. I was taking a break from life in October of 2022. I went offline, I didn't call any friends, I just buried myself in books and such (I was dealing with grief really) and I made my first quilt. It was terrible, just terrible. But I loved making it. I have made several more since. And I'm loving it.

I’ve just started watercolors and I can’t believe how much I enjoy it.
I’ve always wanted to play the cello lol. I would also love to sing.

Great question 😊
Belly dancing. I actually did do it for a couple of years and loved it but I took a break for various reasons and when I went back I seemed to have lost what I’d learned before. I didn’t pick up new steps as quickly or easily, my hips/back were a little less flexible 😁 and consequently I just didn’t enjoy it as much. If i hadn’t taken a break I would have progressed much better and would probably still be doing it.

Honestly I don’t really know. I’ve done a lot of different hobbies and haven’t ever really shied away from trying anything that really grabbed my interest. There are some things I wish I was better at (digital art like my DD does, she is amazing with Procreate and I am not) and some things I wish I had more money to pursue (I’d looove to have a laser cutter but don’t have the funds for one). Someday I plan to finish that mosaic I started in 2012, LOL.

smocking and heritage sewing - I didn't have the time and money when my kids were little and now I have no need for cute smocked baby/toddler clothes.

Guitar ( I bought a guitar about 10 years ago, so, step 1 complete lol)
Water colour painting - took one class and now I save videos.
Miniatures/Dollhouses - trying to avoid as I already have a room full if scrapbook supplies so no room for a hobby like this…but it may still happen.

Woodworking and making furniture. I do make furniture, but only in miniature. My SIL designed and built her own beautiful solid wood bedroom set. I aspire to be that talented.

Stained glass and pottery.
I did try my hand at a small stained glass project in high school open art and really liked it but it is one that takes practice and not a cheap one. I have never taken a pottery course but would love to. A bucket list item.
In grade school I was lucky enough to be in a place that the arts were big. We had a craft place in town and often various grades would get to take classes. There was pottery, another that was coveted that I cant remember (maybe jewelry) and then macrame. You sighed up for your choice order. Not sure how but I always ended up with macrame. 😆
ETA - oh and basket weaving. And now that I think of it I think that was the 2nd option in grade school, not jewelry.

Stained glass would be amazing. My friend's husband started out as a tattoo artist and transitioned into stained glass. He still tattoos on the side, but it's amazing how easy this transition was for him. He's a true artist.

I’ve always thought stained glass would be amazing. And quilting. I’ve done neither and don’t feel I have the skills to invest in either!
I have always wanted to play the ukelele also. I bought one on marketplace but haven’t forged ahead yet. I thought it would be fun as a kindergarten teacher!

There are lots of things I would love to create, but I know my limits in skill and patience, so will not go there.
When the kids were small I took one evening a week for ceramics classes, and loved it. Painted &/or glazed and gave away--and kept--lots of different things. I liked it, but feel more comfortable working with paper.
Going though closets I have unearthed some unfinished yarn art. I used to sketch designs, then render them in crewel work. Jury is still out on whether I will keep the yarn or give it away...

Has he or DD seen The Great Pottery Throw Down? It's on Channel 4 over here and I believe you can get it on Max. It's like The Great British Bake Off or The Great British Sewing Bee but with clay. The things these amateur potters make are extraordinary. It's been running for 8 series and the next one will broadcast in a few months or early next year I believe.

I wish I had learned piano... I know like mom I am not to old.. but its something I dont think I would do now... but when I was younger, I wish we could have financially afforded it... I've always fancied learning the saxophone or jazz piano. Sadly the musical gene passed me by. My brother's children and grandchildren can all play instruments and they all sing, my sister could sing and my father could play the piano by ear but I'm a duck out of water.

I don't know that one would consider it a hobby, but I would have liked t learn to play the piano. I still could, of course, but I'd have to find a place to fit a piano in my house first.

If you are ever near Quechee, Vermont make sure to stop at Simon Pierce. You can watch them blow glass. I love seeing it, it is like an amazing progression from lumps of glass to beautiful things. And “art sculpture’ type glass blowing is even beyond.

I made a silver ring while I was in high school. It was ugly as hell, but I'd love to give actual jewelry making/ metalsmithing and lapidary seem so interesting to me.

Mosaic glass art. I follow a couple of artists on FB and it looks soooo interesting. Unfortunately, there’s no place close to learn.
Ukulele. I play guitar and mandolin, but arthritis in my fingers and hands has made it difficult. I have a good uke but just haven’t pursued it. I need to see if it might be easier on my hands.
I’ve always wanted to do pottery, but never had an opportunity.
I should concentrate on my paper craft, beading and cross stitch supplies as I’ve got enough to last me for another 50 years!

mom, you are never too old to take up singing. I love to sing. It's my favorite thing to do. After decades without training I am learning arias. I never thought I'd be able to find my voice, again, but I did and I am just so fulfilled with my operatic pieces. It's a release and a source of joy. Please find the time to do something you love to do.

Ceramics and Pottery.
I was able to do ceramics when I was a kid and just loved it. I have done a couple small pottery projects in school and also loved that.
But there just isn't any place even close to take advantage of those hobbies.

Golf I grew up going to the country club every weekend with my parents (they are both very good golfers), but my dad refused to teach me because he didn't want to hold up golfers behind us so I never learned how to golf. When my youngest was 6 he took golf lessons, I decided I wanted to as well but it was really hard for me to learn so I stopped going. I wish I would have learned as a kid as I think it would have been easier for me. ![]()
