Do we need two threads or can we be civil? I have to watch vicariously for a while while I drop younger ds off at scouts.
So, if we can be civil, post here. If we cant, pick a side and go.

It'll be on in about an hour. I am always civil. Well, mostly. Okay, sometimes. Never mind, I'm just going to watch Switched At Birth and read his speech later and mumble quietly to myself.

I decided to watch The Bourne Legacy instead 'cause I have a big fat old lady crush on Jeremy Renner and I am pretty sure if he knew me he would be my boyfriend.
I will, however, keep an eye on my twitter account-I follow about 14 different news outlets so I am sure the tweets will be flowing. I should be able to keep track of what is happening pretty well without wanting to beat my head against the wall at the shenanigans on both sides of the aisle.

We are watching now. Vets and support for them is universally being supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. Trade - ok now!

Tuned in late but hearing about the free community colleges has me wondering where he and his advisors have been the last decade - our community colleges are so impacted that classes are almost impossible to get. Since 4 year colleges and universities have gone up in price so much more and more people are trying to get their general ed classes at our local community colleges - they are beyond full and have been for many years - it is sad. It is almost impossible for students that graduate with their AA to get into local State universities - there were 85K apps this last fall (for next falls admission) at SDSU which is way more than the number of students currently attending. While I think it is a great idea to improve the education of our youth this isn't going to work unless we more than double the number of schools we have - realistically we would need at least three times the schools in our area.

many of the community college students get certificates and training that don't include 4 yr degrees.

DH knows he's being kicked to the curb if Jeremy Renner shows up on our doorstep.

I got disgusted when he called for equal pay for women, for equal work and not one republican clapped. How can women vote for those people? Repubs can hate Obama if they want to but they are dismissing women with that behavior.

While I think it is a great idea to improve the education of our youth this isn't going to work unless we more than double the number of schools we have - realistically we would need at least three times the schools in our area. Since I teach at a community college and spend loads of time commiserating with fellow professors over the huge proportion of students who have no business in college already, I'm not seeing this proposal as a great idea. If he means training beyond high school, okay, but community college was supposed to be more than job training. But beyond that issue, where exactly is the money for all this coming from? Our state funding has dropped to around 55% from over 75% within the last 10 years, leaving colleges with no choice but to jack up tuition to cover the difference. We can't afford to attract and retain good teachers because they can make so much more in other fields. Our buildings are falling apart because PECO funds have dried up. So, does Obama have a magic wand that will just poof funding into existence?

many of the community college students get certificates and training that don't include 4 yr degrees. And there is nothing wrong with that. Not everyone needs a 4 year degree. I was just saying that our schools here are really overcrowded and the community college classes are very hard to get. If students do get the classes and graduate and if they want to transfer to the school they were told they could transfer to they are out of luck if they can even afford it if they get in - then they have to fight for classes and there isn't really anyway to graduate in 4 years around here. It just isn't the same as it was 20+ years ago - classes were hard them and getting out in 4 years was almost impossible but now I don't think it is possible at a State school.

funding for community college would come from taxing the 1%.-which would be their estate tax and capital gains on inherited stock. .. and I support obama's call to compromise... our states can also prioritize education...ca community colleges used to be free..now they are only $46 a credit. still something, but affordable with state grants for low income people.

I don't remember them ever being free (I went to one 30 years ago) but still think they are a pretty good deal I thought ours was more so I looked it up and it is $46 a credit to. My main complaint is that no one can actually get the classes they need because there just don't have the money to fund the number of classes needed. Time will tell what happens with this or any of the other things he wants to do. I just don't see the money for the things he is saying he wants to do. I would love to see some good things happen for this country but I just don't see there being the money for it.

Don't you have high class sizes, teacher layoffs... wouldn't that money be better spent on k-12 education. So many kids leave high school, get to community college and need to take remediation classes costing them $. I don't believe university or community collcollege are for every one, but if cc is free and the trade school isn't where will people choose to go? Trade specific training us important and can better prepare grads for employment.

He doesn't need to pass another law when one is already on the books unless he is unaware of the the law.

I don't think this is the case. My understanding is that 529's will be taxed heavily to fund this. Basically if you are middle class, saved/are saving for your own child/ren's college funding, you will now be penalized.

I can get behind the opportunity to earn up to 7 sick days a year, really isn't that just 840/per year? It seems like if the businesses made them earned and capped them, they could offset the cost somehow.

Seriously the community college thing pissed me off. You can't fully fund k-12 education and special education, now you want to pay for cc?
Employers wants higher education because student graduate from high school without good basic skills.
