Hopefully this outbreak will be a WAKE UP CALL for the anti vaccination movement. Vaccinations work people!!!! And I'm tired of getting calls about it. That was awesome and for what its worth I don't believe that vaccinations give you autism. I do wonder how many non vaccinated people have autism, surely there could be a study showing that 1 in so many non vaccinated children have autism...then again maybe those parents are not getting their children early intervention but just trying gluten free casein free diets etc.

Part of the issue is that many, many adults were vaccinated under the old protocols which only required one dose of the vaccine. Many of us are no longer immune because of this, but in my experience, doctors are not necessarily on top of vaccine updates for adults, so most of us probably don't even know we need it. I think this is a big issue that isn't being addressed. When I was pregnant with my first baby blood tests showed I didn't have the MMR immunities anymore. So during that pregnancy I was susceptible to those diseases as I couldn't get the vaccine during pregnancy. After DS was born, I was given the booster before I was allowed to leave the hospital. I have talked to a lot of people in my age group who have no idea they might need a booster to protect them. I was given an MMR booster after both of my first two children were born, only 2.5 years apart. The vax issue hits close to home for us. My daughter and I take immune suppresant drugs. We are very susceptible to catching things.

Thanks! Although after reading these articles .... I am wondering ... Are these the helicopter parents that aren't vaccinating? Did I not worry enough when my dd was vaccinated? Are these people basing their decisions on real information or on the tons of pseudoscience available on the net? As they research vaccinations, are they researching the effects of not vaccinating? As someone who grew up pre. MMR, I am just amazed!! Sorry for typos.... On my phone I've been involved in a lot of vaccine debates over the years, and here is what I can tell you from the trenches, which is that (1) these are indeed people who are more likely to be helicopter parents and are more likely to view their children as extensions of themselves than other people I encounter; (2) they do indeed read a lot of pseudoscience, but there are just enough actual doctors out there who do not vaccinate and support their views that they have cover; (3) they do not believe that there are effects of not vaccinating, because they believe that they can "build up" their children's immune systems so that they do not require vaccines, and they do not believe that herd immunity Is A Thing. I have stopped debating. There is no point. I think the only solution at this point is for the vaccination laws/exemptions to be tightened and enforced. Thanks for replying!

Ha, I figured you were probably just asking a rhetorical question, but this is one of my hot-button issues, and I am in a mood.

The one thing that drives me crazy is when people use the thing about how there are so many increasing numbers ( percentages )of children born who will be diagnosed with autism after vaccinations were created. But you can't compare realistic percentages because 1) not enough children survived past early childhood, and 2) there wasn't the methods of diagnosis we have now. It's not even a thing that could realistically be compared, much less used as proof.
You could just as easily Create the conclusion that your more likely to die from a childhood disease if you have autism from that 'evidence'.

Years ago I managed a LSS and had crops every week. One of our regulars was always very outspoken against vaccines. She was certain it was why she had fibromyalgia. One night she came to a crop and announced that her daughter had spent the week in the hospital with measles. Her daughter was gravely ill and she still came every week thereafter talking jibber jabber against vaccines.

But the vaccines caused her pain. Her poor daughter, having to suffer for her mother's stupidity!

She was really depressed that she always felt miserable, in pain and sleeping most of her day and couldn't play with her (pre-K aged) daughter like she had wanted. She also refused ANY and all fibro meds. She was a mess. And, her daughter nearly died from measles.

I would guess that both anti-depressants and fibro meds would help. And, exercise has also been shown to help with both depression and fibromyalgia. And, of course, vaccinations could save her daughter's life. And who is to say that her daughter won't suffer lifelong side effects from such a severe case of measles? Potentially worse than what she thinks her vaccines caused her.

Since the measles outbreak I have been doing some reading into why people are anti vax and some of it really pisses me off! One lady on Facebook was so mad that her brother had his daughter vaccinated. She even went as far and said he had just given his daughter a death sentence! Another woman was saying how wonderful her doctor is because he doesn't vaccinate and she was happy because he only charged $100 per visit and didn't accept insurance. Of course her kids never had to see the doctor because they hadn't been "injured" by any vaccinations. My favorite is when they call this of us who vaccinate simple minded.

My sister didn't vaccinate her youngest because of things she read on the damned Internet. She barely has a high school diploma, but she knows better than her children's pediatrician. Makes me furious.
