That obituary was such a disgrace and not at all funny. She led such an interesting life and at least the terrible obit has drawn quite a bit of attention. Maybe some that might have skimmed over the news will look into her life and work now.

After that obituary the hashtag #myozobituary started to trend on Twitter. Mainly here in Australia, but worth looking if you tweet. It was mostly celebrities, but some regular people writing their own obits in the same stupid manner. Pretty awesome. Here's what I wrote. @americanozmom: Lacking an ass a quarter could be bounced off of, Humanity tolerated her competence in transforming the benign into blasphemy #myozobituary
Colleen was a wonderful writer and human being. She deserved a far better send off then the Australian gave her.

This was my favourite (it wasn't written by me): "Small of talent and certainly a sexist hack, he was nevertheless employed by The Australian to write obituaries". I can't believe that obituary was published. What a disgrace. Do any of the Aussie peas know whether The Australian have issued an apology?

I liked that one too. I haven't heard of any response from the Australian. Not there wasn't one, but I haven't seen it. I did notice with interest that there was no byline on the obituary.

It makes me think the obituary writer is jealous and petty. Apparently he is old and already dead. Someone should have checked it before it went out!

Well, it's not quite the usual kind of obituary but as a woman reported to be of 'wit and warmth' and a 'teller of a good story peppered with profanities', she is probably delighted with that because it covers absolutely every aspect of her life!! Exactly what I was going to say- she could almost have written it herself!

You have obits ready for famous people so that they can quickly be updated and put in print. In this day and age with computers. You would think they might have checked to see how old the obit was and updated before they put it out.

Very odd opening sentence, for sure! I've only read The Thorn Birds. I didn't realize she was a scientist as well! What an interesting life she led. I read your post, and had to go back and actually read the article. Thank you. I had no idea. Colleen McCullough was an outstanding woman in multiple difficult fields. How incredibly arrogant to undermine her throughout a tribute to her life. Dalai Mama, you're title was better. At least it was short and to the point!

Loved The Thorn Birds! I'm amazed at all CC had managed to accomplish in her lifetime. Even so, that must have been the most poorly written obit that I've ever read. May Colleen RIP.
