DH has to take math this semester and it's gonna be the death of him I think. I'm no help. I haven't seen a fraction in years! lol! I told him I couldn't go back to school for that reason. I can do history, and other subjects but math forget it!Poor Dh. He's he's worried it's going to affect his average. Next week he can start using a calculator. He's at 92% but only 87% in Math. I would be happy with the 87%!! My step-dad tried to walk him through some of the hard stuff while were up in Utah. My step-dad is math nut he can do numbers in his head really well. It made my head spin listening to them! We joked we were glad we don't have kids -so we don't have to help them with homework cause we'd have to hire my step dad.
Are you good at math!?

Yep. I teach 6th grade math. I'm teaching so much of what I learned on 8th grade Algebra. I completely love math!

NO and my statistics class this quarter is killing me. The silver lining is, it is TRULY my last math class. I had previously thought my last two math classes were my last math classes and they were not

I'm good at basic math, algebra and statistics. Once you start adding in shapes and angles I fall apart. I had to take geometry twice in high school.

Nope ... when I first started teaching I was assigned a grade 8 math class ... I had to learn the lessons myself before I could teach them and there were still kids in my class that knew waaaaaay more than me ... thankfully, I never had to teach math again

I consider math to be one of my strengths. It ends up being the favorite of most of my students.

Basic math, yes, beyond that no. When I took my college placement tests a couple weeks ago I easily tested out of English, Writing and Computer Skills. Math....not so much. I did fine on the pre-algebra stuff, but once I had to start figuring out what X was, I was screwed.

No...and I am not sure if it is because I am really not good at math, or if it because at this point I have convinced myself that I am not good at math.
I had to take math in college of course, but that was 25 years ago. I haven't been able to help the boys with their math homework starting in about sixth grade because as soon as the numbers turn into letters my brain shuts off.

I was terrible at arithmetic - still count on my fingers - and terrible at algebra. Give me a nice complex calculus equation and I'm good to go - who knew? I can handle very advanced math but not basic math. I fought through every math class I could take until I got to senior calculus - that I could handle - and I sailed through college math.

I love math! I ended up getting a minor in quantitative psychology while earning my doctorate because I loved taking stats courses.
I started teaching college psychology stats a few years ago and love it.

He can talk legal big words and contracts etc... but he is feeling little lost- if he had to do stats with the court he'd be stressed about it for weeks.

If he ends up having any specific Stats problems that confuse him, feel free to pm me and I'll help if I can. Psychology can be so messy, with the answers to many questions starting with "it depends," followed by a variety of possible answers. Stats, for the most part, are nice and clean and there is one solution. I really love that balance.

No. I took College Algebra two years ago. I had to take 3 pre-requisite classes before I could take the Algebra class. And I did very well in those. But that Algebra class nearly killed me. I did hours and hours of homework for that class. I never worked so hard for such a poor grade in my life.
Luckily for me, DH is very good at math and, so far, so are my kids. My oldest is sailing through all his High School math without hardly having to try. I don't have to help anyone with math homework. And that is a good thing.

I teach fifth grade math and have gotten great at it! I love numbers as long as they are not involved with letters. Once there are more letters than numbers, I'm out. Yes! Go to www.khanacademy.org It goes from about third grade math all the way up through college levels. It is simply explained and there are problems to try and videos and hints for when you need help. It is where I send my parents who have forgotten how fractions work.

No, and I was unable to help DD with her maths homework from about Year 5 onwards!
I did actually receive a High Distinction in the statewide Maths competition back in Year 8 - that's my one and only claim to fame! After that I dropped maths as soon as I was able, which was in Year 11.

Yep! I tell my girls that math is my super power LOL!
I had a near-perfect score in math on the ACT and a 760 on the SAT (which equates to a 770 or 780 today when it is adjusted for the "recentering" they did to SAT scores a few years ago). When I took the GRE, there were two math sections, and I scored 780 and 800 on those. I LOVE MATH!
Now social studies, writing, and literature? Those were much harder for me and required a lot of effort on my part to get good grades. Math just naturally made sense to me, and that usually carried over into the sciences as well.

I'm okay at it. I have to look at the examples to help my students with their math classes if they are higher than geometry because I just don't remember it.
I suck at functions for some reason and percentages.

No. And I seriously think I have a math learning disability but those weren't diagnosed in the 70's/80's. I never went past pre algebra 2 in high school and I failed that. I tried algebra 1 twice in college (community college then four year) and had to drop it both times because after a couple of weeks I was failing. And that was with using the tutoring center at the college. I ended up finishing college with a major in history (no math required) with honors but still can't do math. DD is just as bad but thankfully gets extra help at school. Because once she got into long division, I was useless. And even before that I often was with the "new" math that came home with no directions/examples and was totally different from the math I know.
It's embarrassing. One of these days I want to go back to take some beginning math classes online/community college and start from the beginning and go very slowly.

I LOVE math. I was -> <- thiiiiis close to majoring in math in university... the math department even wrote me a letter asking me to. But in the end I went with biochemistry because I didn't want to tell people I was a mathematician.

I love it still.....my kids think I am crazy!

I am. I appreciate the logical process of figuring out the "puzzle". I prefer literature and history though. I am one of those evenly right-brained and left-brained people who loves pretty much learning any subject.

I am awful at it. And I see no use for things like algebra (what's the point of a quadratic equation?) Dd is like me. However, she said she's actually enjoying -- a little bit anyway -- her statistics class in college. Statistics is real, algebra is fake. That's our conclusion. She can see an actual real-life application for statistics. I do elementary school substitute teaching and I've told the 5th grade teachers that word problems are beyond me.
