To tell about it and so did my DGS.
DS and family went to a 4th party at a friend's home. It sounded like a lot of fun but also a nightmare. DS said it was a huge crowd, much larger than they DS and DIL expected. The friends have a pool.
DGS is 3 and wears a flotation device when in the water and he is fearless. I'm sure you know where this is going. The whole crowd went to the front yard to play family games. While DS and DIL were helping DGD age 6, DGS slipped away unnoticed.
When DS realized it he ran to the pool just in time to see DGS in mid air jumping off the diving board sans floaties. By the time DS dove in to get him he was already at the bottom of the pool. DGS is ok. He has had some swimming lessons so he held his breath.
What at a nightmare. It could have been a huge tragedy that happens all the time unfortunately. Drownings happen whether parties are large or small but tend to happen when there are a lot of people around.
DGS needs to be tethered to DS or DIL. He has so much energy and so very fearless at age 3.
As we were traveling home last evening, we were run off the road by a lady changing lanes. I guess she never saw us. It was very frightening. If DH hadn't been able to move over we might not be here to tell about it. We were all going about 75 mph. Luckily we were in the middle lane and moved to the left with no cars beside us. We ended up in the median as she went her merry way.
So I'm glad the weekend is over. Whew....

Not surprised you are glad the weekend is over! Both of those things are very frightening and the first, in particular, is the stuff nightmares are made of!! BTDT exactly with one of my kids at about the same age. I still cringe when the thing comes to mind even now and that happened a very long time ago! Hope you are now going to have some quiet, peaceful time to get over the weekend!

DS said when he realized DGS was not by his side he didn't even scan the crowd but ran straight to the pool. DGS wasn't fazed by it at all but DS said it really shook him up.

I'm glad everyone is OK! My son did that once, age 2 1/2 or so, just jumped in with no warning whatsoever. Thankfully we were at a hotel pool so it wasn't deep and no harm was done. When we fished him out he was gasping and spluttering and we said "Was that any fun? Would you ever do that again?" (I'm sure you can hear our tone there) and he just gasped "YES!" lol Needless to say, we left the pool.

How scary. Drowning happens so quickly. I'm glad that your ds realized it so quickly, or it could have ended in a tragedy. Does your son have a pool gate? If not, it is definitely something to consider.

I had a fearless kid too, particularly when it involved water (and I live in Florida, it is EVERYWHERE.) He was the kid at the pool at 18 months who would sprint like lightening and jump in before I could even blink an eye. If I was holding his hand, his royal slipperiness would somehow disappear and reappear in the pool. He wouldn't wear floaties, he would scream bloody murder if I even looked like I was thinking about them. I got lucky that the life guard at the pool was also one of the swim teachers at the Y. We talked about it and came up with a plan...let him jump in and let's teach him how to be safe in the water (swimming lessons.) I know, I know. I was the mother who got the evil eye ALL summer that year. Parents would jump from their chair when I would calmly slip off my flip flops and walk over and fish him out. I heard ever muttered comment about what a horrible mother I was and all kinds of variations on the theme. But the child was never more than 5 seconds away from me. I knew how he was around water and was always hypervigilant. When I fished him out of the water, he would come out laughing like a loon. At the same time, he was getting swim lessons, and by the age of 2, could swim across the short side of the pool with a toy in his hand. He was a born fish. And because I didn't freak out every time he jumped in the water, he never learned that water was a fearful place. So anyway, all that to say? I am glad your grandbaby was safe! Sounds like a great lesson was learned and one of those is that the little one is NOT afraid of the water. LOL Swim lessons are a definite must now. If he is already taking them, all the better.

Glad everyone is safe.
Oldest ds has been hired as a lifeguard at some private parties, particularly graduation open houses with a lot of people coming and going. I always thought those pool owners were wise to have someone there whose only job was to watch the pool.

Oh my happy this turned out ok. Bet it put the fear of god in them. We have a pool and when we bought 3 summers ago, pool fence with lock was the first thing we installed besides the existing pool alarm on all door and windows. My son is 3 and is the fearless little boy. He has to wear his lifejacket anytime he's on that side of the fence. Only comes off with me, not even dh, when practicing swimming from lessons.
We've hired our local swim instructors with CPR lifeguard training before for a pool party and have been to home parties that have done the same as well. Best peace of mind ever.

Scary! Glad to hear everyone is okay. My DS was a "fish kid" too, whenever there was water in the vincinity, we couldn't blink. He was absolutely fearless (still is at 15), and vacations were a nightmare until he could swim.

Yes DS is much more traumatized than DIL.
To clarify, this was a friends house and a large pool party not DS's house.
My middle child was fearless as a 3 year old. We opted not to put a pool in or even an above ground one even though we had the perfect yard and everyone loved the water. We were too scared he would get away from us.

Your son reacted so quickly not bothering to ask around where the little boy was, I'm sure an angel was watching over them. It doesn't matter the age, my teenage grandson broke both wrists falling out of a tree on Saturday. They give us gray hair for sure!

I would tell your son to enroll him in more lessons. If he's that fearless, give him more skills as well as a sense of understanding of the danger of the water. Maybe you'll have a competitive swimmer one day

Oh man, my stomach just turned at the thought of "what if...." :::: shudder ::::: So glad your DS got to him in time!
I was driving home from picking up pizza on Saturday night when a pickup truck decided to pass us. The road is very wide, with lane-sized areas over the white line. I was doing 52 in a 50 but people can't stand to drive behind a Mini Cooper, so I've learned in the past month since buying it. As he went around us, I heard this loud "clank" noise and saw a large pipe (6' in length) followed by a smaller pipe (another 2-3') fly by my window. I was so unnerved I pulled over. The thought of what could have happened if that had gone through my windshield had me breathless for a few seconds. It had to be his muffler/tailpipe system because he kept on going (flying) down the road.

I agree, that's really the smart thing to do if you're a pool owner and having a sizable amount of guests over.

How scary! At least he is safe and you'll have a fun story when he is older. I jumped in a hotel pool at that age, and my grandmother - picture a woman who is always put together with pearls, lipstick, perfectly polished nails, and kitten heals - jumped in right behind me. I think I was already swimming a little, but not enough to be on my own.
