As I was sitting with my kid while he ate his breakfast, the annual "OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY THE NEW SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIM SUIT ADDITION IS OUT!!!" news story came on, complete with drooling news reporters. But this year is a little a different. There is a plus size model being featured. She is beautiful, and she definitely has curves. I mentioned something to the boy about how nice it is to have a little variety because I can't imagine that there aren't men out there who don't find all kinds of body shapes beautiful-not just the ones they usually show. He said that as far as he and his friends were concerned, there are. So maybe there are baby steps being made toward showing that beauty really does come in different shapes, sizes, colors and form. Sports Illustrated

I did, and the ugliness already being spewed online about her is really disheartening.

I want to be her size 16 body.
My size 16 body looks nothing like that. All lumps, bumps, wear & tear.
She's lovely though.

It's about time. I hope she is thick skinned because change doesn't come easily for most.

It's funny how there are so many who say "ewww, ick, men don't WANT to see a fat woman in the swimsuit issue!"
In my experience, men like a lot of different things. Sure, there are lots of men who like the skinny Hollywood-approved bodies that they usually feature. There are men who like athletic bodies. And there are men who like curvier women. So now, what - maybe 1 or 2% of the women in the entire issue are curvier? Yet you'd think that the entire issue has been filled with women the size of houses to read some of the whining and moaning.
If you like a certain body type, enjoy the pic. If you don't, turn the page. I'm sure that there are quite a few men who will be quite happy to see this particular body type in the magazine.

She doesn't look "plus-size" to me -- she looks lovely and healthy with a nicely proportioned body. She looks... realistic. Their usual models are not realistically what women look like. I think it's a refreshing change.

Let's be realistic. This plus-sized model looks better than most size 16 women out there. Her stomach is flatter than mine and I'm a size 6!
It will be nice to see the general public starting to accept that size 0 does not equal beauty but ha, that won't happen any time soon.
And this is not a model for SI. She's in an ad that will be in SI. Her shoot was for a company that makes swimwear for larger women, not for the magazine itself.

I wish we could shelve the term "plus size". I think she is beautiful and I won't even go near the internet comments because I'm sure they are nasty. And I bet most of the men spewing crap are all perfect tens that have their choice of model women.

Actually, I did read some of the comments and from what I could tell the negative comments seemed to be coming more from women than men.

She looks fantastic! My size 6/8 body looked nowhere near as good as her! My post baby size 10/12 self is even more horrific. Great for her...I think she looks better than many of the other models in the past.

I think she looks awesome! BUT, the comment I wish we could shelve is "Now this is what a real woman looks like." Drives me batty to read that.

I just believe that it is sad for one, to refer to this young woman as a "plus sized" model. She looks in great physical condition and no where near "plus sized" Unless size 12 is now "plus sized." Second, it is totally beyond my understanding why she is the target of so much "web-hate."

She's in an Ad.
That's not like being chosen to appear in a swimsuit spread in SI swimsuit issue.
She's fabulously beautiful!

I think it's great to see an average size woman on the cover, but I agree she looks better than most. Anyone who's had kids, lost/gained weight probably doesn't look like that.

As I read through the articles it was more clear (than the news) that she is part of an ad campaign, but it is still a first for SI and from what I understand it isn't a single page. But since typically ads for swimsuits in a magazine like the SI Swimsuit edition are not plus size, I feel like it is a step in the right direction.

I think she's flipping gorgeous and me at size 16 looks NOTHING like that. Whine.
Now having said that, she's not being featured by SI, she's in an advertisement but it's nice to see everyone being represented.

She's a perfectly proportioned, curvy woman who looks great. But not every woman is built that way...it's still not realistic for most women so to me it's not really any better than showing smaller, equally perfectly proportioned women. In fact, this is even less attainable for me than being a size two. If I was a 16 I'd be lumpy and most of the fat would settle on my midsection and thighs. Sigh.
I agree with the above comment that we should stop with the "That's what a REAL woman looks like". Thin women are real women too. They just eat less or have quicker metabolisms. We're all "real"women.

I'm disappointed she is in an ad, not the actual layouts in the magazine.
I think she looks awesome.

I thought that was a cool story until I saw the actual cover of the SI issue with the model who is basically pulling her bottoms off. I get sex sells, but sometimes just feels like we are going backwards! I am all for art and appreciation and beauty...but it just seems like the marginalizing of women never ends. And I'm not even a feminist.

Now if it was the cover of Playboy, I wouldn't have a problem with it but basically showing your twat on the cover of Sports Illustrated is just gross.

She looked great and at least she is a plus size. I know when America's Top Model shows a plus size model, she is a size 8 or maybe a 10. Of course she does look plus size next to the anorexic sized sub 0.

I guess I'm getting old and skeptical. I really don't see this as any great step forward for women-just great marketing by SI and that swimsuit company.

Given my husband opted to forego the swimsuit issue in favor of extending his subscription, I've not seen this year's magazine. I honestly find it surprising the advertisement is even news, after Kate Upton graced the cover last year. She appears "plus-sized" compared to her colleagues in every appearance & advertisement (except on the SI cover which was obviously altered/airbrushed).

Sports IllustratedShe's been a model for Lane Bryant for years. She's been branching out in the last five as I've seen her in other places including Macy's. She really is beautiful and my husband loves her. It was the only way I could get him to go shopping with me...and he would read my Lane Bryant ads before I did...lol. He likes his girls thick. He's all about that bass...lol.

She does look great but is it just me that her swimsuit doesn't fit her boobs? I'm not sure if she is sized right or that was the point or if it's just the camera angle.
