Oh my, so I bet this is about the 20th thread I've started on 2Peas about organizing, because it's an ongoing issue for me and I'm not very good at it!
I decided on Friday to overhaul my scrapbook room. Took out the old hutch. Took out a desk. Painted and hung up wall shelves. I think it's going to be GOOD *if* I ever finish, but right now it's pretty bad.
I have all of my supplies everywhere, and I'm just stuck on where to put them. I think I actually need another shelf/bookcase or more wall shelves, so working on an IKEA list right now.
Anyway -- if you've redone a room/started from scratch, did you get stuck in the situation of not being able to put your stuff away because you don't have anywhere to put it, and you don't know what to put stuff on because you don't know where you're going to put your stuff?

I am about to go through something similar. I am moving my scraproom into my son's room when he leaves for college (his room is twice as big) and moving his room into my scraproom. I am planning to box all his stuff up and move it into the garage. Put in new furniture in my scrapbook room and then move my room. When my room is empty, I'll move him back in. Luckily, he'll be 5 hours away and not home until Thanksgiving break...so I'll have a couple months.

I just redid my desk area and left the existing shelves in place. I thought I needed more shelf space, but after a cull of things I didn't use any more, it worked out fine. If there's anything you can clear out because it's surplus, maybe that's the place to start?

That is pretty awesome, cmpeter! Will you need/want to buy new furniture for your new BIG room! anniefb, I have done some purges recently -- I try to every six months or so. Plus did a huge one when we moved in 2-3 years ago. I will do another soon!

I hate the moment where it looks so much worse than it ever did and you wonder if you will ever find the bottom, or the end, or any sense of calm ever again. I feel your pain! Maybe start making stacks. Start throwing away (I admit this is where I become ruthless and just throw away whole stacks)!
Is it just me, or do you always leave IKEA feeling like AH, the whole world is nicely organized. And then I come home and everything looks like chaos. LOL

I started making stacks last night. Like with like. I tend to stack stuff up anyway, but it's not usually organized.

We just moved from TN to TX. My crafty stuff is in the garage right now...so I definitely feel your pain.
I can't figure where to start.

I know how you feel. I did a three way room swap with two of my sons, I ended up in the smaller room from the biggest room. What fit in the old room did not fit in the new room! It took a while to figure out where to put it all. I was in the room about a year and moved it all around as it did not work or "feel" right. Now I think it is just about right, for scrapping, but I still could do some purging. Or find another place to store some supplies. I do lots of other crafty stuff besides scrapping, so it ALL needs a better home.

I find it always has to get worse before it gets better, no way around it. And that is about the time I lose interest, lol.
I'm in the middle of a re-organization/purge at the moment, it's a mess!

If you can wait that long (July 31) and have $15 bucks to spare, studio calico has a class coming up on organizing your workspace. I signed up, one of the very few workshops I have ever taken. But...I Need it.

Yes, new furniture for sure. My current furniture is fugly and old and too small for the new space. Still haven't quite decided what...I am thinking Kallax from Ikea with some counters from Home Depot and a lot of help from DH.

I am totally tempted by this Kallax set up: awesome Kallax with doors and casters but I have a piece that is functionally almost the same, and no room for something that big. But it is pretty awesome looking!

I agree with the worse before it gets better! I tell myself that frequently when cleaning/reorganizing. And totally with you on the losing interest part.

I have a tiny bit of mixed media stuff and a tiny bit of fabric, and it's hard to make it all work together. Especially when I use some fabric for quilting but some of it I use for scrapbooking...

I am in the middle of getting my room organized. Instead of buying more storage though, I am getting rid of things I have not used. I have punches, stamps, ink pads, cutters, tons of paper, embellishments that I have never used or they not my style any more. It has been hard for me to part with some but I am donating to a local women and children's shelter so I know they will use the items more than me. Wishing you lots of luck!

We moved into our new house 1.5 years ago and I redid my scrapbook area when we did. I have a 5x5 Expedit, a raskog cart and a smaller bookcase that basically stores all my supplies. Before moving, etc. I really went through my stuff. In the end I didn't really purge that much, but it is organized much better. Going forward my goal has always been not to outgrown my space. So far I'm doing just fine.

I am fortunate that I have my own dedicated room. We designed it as a dual office for my DH and me--we hung cabinets on either side above our desks. One whole wall is windows. We moved DH's office to another room so it's now all mine, but nothing is really organized, I can't seem to get anything done in here, and I don't know where/how to start reorganizing. I know I need to start by emptying out the closet--it's not used efficiently and a lot of stuff in there can go and most definitely be reorganized.
I wish someone would come over and tell me what to do.

I have these grand plans, full of excitement, start cleaning and purging and just when everything is torn apart I am done! I hope your plans go much better!

I've been dealing with the "can't put anything away" syndrome for over two years, since we moved into this house. I'm very lucky to have a HUGE space but I haven't unpacked most of my stuff because I don't have the cash to build out the space the way I need it and I refuse to unpack everything only to have to pack it back up again when I do have the money to get my cabinets installed. (Which, keeping my fingers and toes crossed, will hopefully be soon now!) I did unpack boxes and boxes of books that I keep for reference only to have the shelf I put them on collapse! It killed me to have to repack all of them in boxes again.
It's one of those things where I just KNOW that even though I'm living in a mess right now, it will get ten times worse once I start pulling stuff out of boxes. It's making me crazy knowing that I have stuff and not knowing where it is. At this point I'm just trying hard to keep the faith.

I just did this in April. I couldn't believe how much I had stuffed into my craft room. It had been a long time since I had worked in there because it had become so chaotic. Once everything was out, I painted stripes on one wall, installed a chandelier and made one of those desks from the MS bookcases. I told myself that I would only keep what would fit nicely in the room. I too was ruthless and got rid of 3 huge moving boxes full of stuff. What really surprised me was the amount of garbage I pulled out of there. But it was all worth it. I love my space and have been in there every chance I get. I actually have lots of room to grow as most of the cubbies in my desk are empty. It was a pain because all my stuff was stacked in my dining room as I was sorting....okay and there was some in the family room too. I work full time so this was sort of a long process for me. And I'm sure it annoyed the fam. But it's done and I'm tickled with my space. It's so worth it!

I just shoved everything in my closet (what would fit) after we moved and have been just working around. I need to do something because I don't even bother to look thru my old stuff.

I have not had a dedicated space since we moved into this house. Now, 3 kids later, we're bursting at the seams and will probably be adding on soon. Part of the addition will be a new sewing/craft room for me, so I've been looking at all kinds of examples of scrap rooms and sewing rooms trying to figure out what I want and what will work in the allotted space. I'm interested in seeing what everyone here is recommending.
I don't have all that much scrap stuff aside from paper, although I could probably scrap the rest of my life with the paper I have, but I do have tons and tons of fabric and sewing supplies and 3 sewing machines. The architect, builder and DH were laughing at me when I was going over the merits of different room configurations, storage solutions, etc and figuring out how to get everything to fit that I want in the room (plus outlets, lighting, etc). They don't see the point of worrying about it (how much paper and fabric could one person have anyway?- um, a lot.) If I'm going to do this, I might as well do it right from the beginning so I'll love the room. I'm not going to want to run extension cords or just stick a lamp on a desk if I have the option to get what I need from the start, and I don't want to run out of storage space before the room is even built!
Good luck with organizing. It's so hard when you're in the midst of an organizing project and the mess is everywhere, but it will be worth it when you're done.

I feel everyone's pain. Just finished cleaning out my space tonight. Most of what came out belongs to other family members. My space had become a convenient dumping ground and I was having trouble even getting in the room. Pretty much got everyone else's stuff out and now I nee to organize mine.
Scrapbook.com has a great workshop on organizing your scrap room. It's really in-depth. I have looked it over several times and always find something helpful.

I'll be watching this thread. I moved my room from the 2nd floor to the basement and its still a wreck. I'm having a problem putting away the boxes and tubs of momentos. I want them organized enough so I can find what I want to include in the scrapbook but have gotten nowhere. I'm back to walking a path to my desk. I told myself I can't scrap until its done and organized. Its been weeks....

Interesting to hear how everyone tackles the moving and re organising. I try and have a bit of a clean out or cull every 6 months or so to try and stay on top of things. Not easy though!
